Nick Carparelli

There's a hugh difference between the size of the video game market, versus playing video games for other people to watch for entertainment.

I don't see watching people play video games as a sustainable market opportunity. It's freaking boring.

How much does anyone like watching someone else play a game, unless (1) they are waiting for their turn, or (2) they are memorizing moves that someone else makes playing a game? I just don't see it as interesting.
You do realize you can reduce pretty much any entertainment to your “logic”, right?

Who wants to pay a bunch of money to watch a bunch of kids bounce a ball and try to get it through the hoop? It’s freaking boring!

Who wants to spend an entire afternoon watching a bunch of cars drive in a circle? Boring!

Who wants to pay money to watch two people on TV punch each other in the head?

Yet, basketball, racing, and boxing rake in $$$. This might come as a shock, but not everyone has the same interests.

We knew the article was coming right? They have done Capparelli and Lyke. Do the other 2 rumored candidates also get featured?

Heather Lyke and esports. Why don't you guys just drop an anvil on me and finish the job?

If she gets the job I'll need to be done.
I've said it before mostly joking but this would be the WORST thing SU has done in a long time and it would ruin what we have.
I agree after 70+ years don't want someone like her running the SU athletic department. She might be a good person, but already proved at Pitt , she isn't qualified for Big Time Athletics, and we don't have the time for her to learn.
This has to be the right hire or SU as a division 1 school is finished.

, I get that. But ultimately there has to be a product or service that someone will pay for.
I don't see it with eSports. If it's not spectators, how will they make money?
Ads. There is a 4th level soccer team that Burger King sponsored. The jerseys are the top sellers, and all the FIFA kids use that team, and put great players on it.
Millions of people from all over the world watch these things. If you didn’t have kids who did it, you can’t fathom it.

Yes but we are talking about a university with limited funds. If basketball and football which bring in 99% of the revenue then those two need to segments need To be put front and center when it comes to funding. If that is means esports loses funding then that’s the price you pay to be a p4 program.

Esports makes money primarily through sponsorships, advertising, media rights, merchandise, and ticket sales, generating over 2.3 billion in revenue in 2024. Teams and organizations also generate revenue through content creation, streaming on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, and, to a lesser extent, tournament prize winnings.

I bet E-Sports are close to revenue neutral. Especially considering that tuition costs are malleable, so the out of pocket is really room and board, and how much do gamers eat, really. I assume there are no travel costs

No, no, you see. I’M the main character of the world. You all share the interests I will you to have.

They do travel to major LAN events, regional qualifiers, and major tournaments.
Especially if the event is in a big convention like PAX.
It allows them all to play in front of live audiences.
Teams will also Twitch stream their events and that will draw in good revenue.
Univesity of Hawaii has a great program.

Nothing about that article says anything transformative about her. “She knows how important it is to win with football.” “She knows it’s important to meet with donors like Carmelo Anthony”. Well NO DUH. But good lord talk about giving someone a chance that doesn’t deserve it with this article.
She has no chance of getting the job right?

Congrats Andy. Am glad to know at least one IU person who enjoyed their historic run.
Thank you Tom!

Believe me.

None of my friends can believe that this really happened.

All we ever wanted was a chance to play in the Rose Bowl. That's all.

And, we never thought that that would ever happen.

And for most of us, the Rose Bowl win was better than the win against Miami.

As much fun as it was, it could never compare to an appearance in the NC Game by Syracuse University.

Let's hope we catch lightening in a bottle and it happens in the near future.

I don’t really see how it’s any different than chess and chess tournaments historically.

It has more interest and viewership because video games have a larger following for sure, and mass media/social media is a different landscape. But at the core of it I don’t see how it’s any different than chess.

What’s amazing is some posters are heading in the right direction on where things seem to be heading. The eye opening part to me is some of the ones I’ve thought for years were in the inner circle of SU on this forum have no idea what they are talking about.
Call them out

I sit corrected. Thanks

A video with Chris Carlson and Mike Walters from a day or two ago pretty much confirmed that the new AD is Nick. They couldn't officially confirm but Chris said 99% wink wink.
Yup - pointed to Wildhacks comments on the day we hired the new chancellor

I know everyone love to use IU as the "standard" but at this point it's like saying Saban was the standard for years.
IU was a perfect strom.
They hired one of the best coach of this time period.
They have the largest alumni base in America.
They had the adminstartions full backing and they pulled out all the stops for the program.

We can not replicate that BUT we, I believe, made a great hire for sports in our new Chancellor and if Carapelli is our new AD they both should greatly improve our sports teams in general with the support I'm beating they will throug behind it.
This is a great post.

Call them out
I will never do that. I will say all current major athletic donors have discussed expectations of this hire with the university.
The hire is not done but should be imminent.
The associate AD etc… are not set in stone and things will be fluid. PD, albeit solid in his role, is not the driving force for NIL donations. That shows how there is a total lack of communication. Bball NIL is only hanging on by a thread, football NIL has a constant in JR.
New AD has work to do and if the wrong one is hired they will have an uphill battle and some making up to do.

If you’re not going to call them out then there was no need to say it in the first place, respectfully
