No. no no no no no no. NO!
You do realize you can reduce pretty much any entertainment to your “logic”, right? There's a hugh difference between the size of the video game market, versus playing video games for other people to watch for entertainment.
I don't see watching people play video games as a sustainable market opportunity. It's freaking boring.
How much does anyone like watching someone else play a game, unless (1) they are waiting for their turn, or (2) they are memorizing moves that someone else makes playing a game? I just don't see it as interesting.
I agree after 70+ years don't want someone like her running the SU athletic department. She might be a good person, but already proved at Pitt , she isn't qualified for Big Time Athletics, and we don't have the time for her to learn. If she gets the job I'll need to be done.
I've said it before mostly joking but this would be the WORST thing SU has done in a long time and it would ruin what we have.
Ads. There is a 4th level soccer team that Burger King sponsored. The jerseys are the top sellers, and all the FIFA kids use that team, and put great players on it., I get that. But ultimately there has to be a product or service that someone will pay for.
I don't see it with eSports. If it's not spectators, how will they make money?
Yes but we are talking about a university with limited funds. If basketball and football which bring in 99% of the revenue then those two need to segments need To be put front and center when it comes to funding. If that is means esports loses funding then that’s the price you pay to be a p4 program. You do realize you can reduce pretty much any entertainment to your “logic”, right?
Who wants to pay a bunch of money to watch a bunch of kids bounce a ball and try to get it through the hoop? It’s freaking boring!
Who wants to spend an entire afternoon watching a bunch of cars drive in a circle? Boring!
Who wants to pay money to watch two people on TV punch each other in the head?
Yet, basketball, racing, and boxing rake in $$$. This might come as a shock, but not everyone has the same interests.
Esports makes money primarily through sponsorships, advertising, media rights, merchandise, and ticket sales, generating over 2.3 billion in revenue in 2024. Teams and organizations also generate revenue through content creation, streaming on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, and, to a lesser extent, tournament prize winnings.Yeah, I get that. But ultimately there has to be a product or service that someone will pay for.

Pissing people off sems to be tops among them.Interesting piece and PR. It is possible she has learned from her mistakes at Pitt and could bring experience to the role. I know she is persona non grata here, but she definitely has some skills.
I bet E-Sports are close to revenue neutral. Especially considering that tuition costs are malleable, so the out of pocket is really room and board, and how much do gamers eat, really. I assume there are no travel costsYes but we are talking about a university with limited funds. No, no, you see. I’M the main character of the world. You all share the interests I will you to have. You do realize you can reduce pretty much any entertainment to your “logic”, right?

They do travel to major LAN events, regional qualifiers, and major tournaments.I bet E-Sports are close to revenue neutral. Especially considering that tuition costs are malleable, so the out of pocket is really room and board, and how much do gamers eat, really. I assume there are no travel costs
She has no chance of getting the job right?Nothing about that article says anything transformative about her. “She knows how important it is to win with football.” “She knows it’s important to meet with donors like Carmelo Anthony”. Well NO DUH. But good lord talk about giving someone a chance that doesn’t deserve it with this article.
Thank you Tom!Congrats Andy. Am glad to know at least one IU person who enjoyed their historic run.
Her and Lloyd Christmas always have a chanceShe has no chance of getting the job right?
I don’t really see how it’s any different than chess and chess tournaments historically. They do travel to major LAN events, regional qualifiers, and major tournaments.
Especially if the event is in a big convention like PAX.
It allows them all to play in front of live audiences.
Teams will also Twitch stream their events and that will draw in good revenue.
Univesity of Hawaii has a great program.
Call them outWhat’s amazing is some posters are heading in the right direction on where things seem to be heading. The eye opening part to me is some of the ones I’ve thought for years were in the inner circle of SU on this forum have no idea what they are talking about.
Exactly!I think Pete Thamel is on to something.
Nick seems to be uniquely qualified for the AD position.

A video with Chris Carlson and Mike Walters from a day or two ago pretty much confirmed that the new AD is Nick. They couldn't officially confirm but Chris said 99% wink wink.Pretty sure the new AD already knows and has been hired. Donna’s story is terribly outdated.
I sit corrected. ThanksThey do travel to major LAN events, regional qualifiers, and major tournaments.

Yup - pointed to Wildhacks comments on the day we hired the new chancellorA video with Chris Carlson and Mike Walters from a day or two ago pretty much confirmed that the new AD is Nick. They couldn't officially confirm but Chris said 99% wink wink.
This is a great post.I know everyone love to use IU as the "standard" but at this point it's like saying Saban was the standard for years.
IU was a perfect strom.
They hired one of the best coach of this time period.
They have the largest alumni base in America.
They had the adminstartions full backing and they pulled out all the stops for the program.
We can not replicate that BUT we, I believe, made a great hire for sports in our new Chancellor and if Carapelli is our new AD they both should greatly improve our sports teams in general with the support I'm beating they will throug behind it.
