NIL struggles

I might be misunderstanding, but why would Melo want to keep his distance; and why would him being around affect Red running the program? He could only be a positive and he's never been a coach so it wouldn't detract from Red's appearance. I think the first couple years it would have been the most helpful.
Yeah, good point and I agree. I wouldn't think Melo being around would negatively impact what Red is doing. Now, Boeheim, sure. That's true with any coach taking over for a legend.

It’s year 2 for a new coach. Melo kept his distance so Red could run. The program, but has also been working with cuse companies since last year. People don’t know this but melo is here quite often. He’s just very under the radar but he has been helping since last year and Kiyan gives him a very big reason to hit the gas and ramp things up
Id think Red might need him for his salesmanship to help out in raising funds if he's not able to excite the fanbase with his message.

Meanwhile from the sounds of it Fran, a non-alum has blown past Red in this department despite Red being an alum and having a head start.

HE'S THE ONE CLAIMING HE WANTS TO HELP THE UNIVERSITY!
He does a ton of good for charities take some time and do some research. If he or anyone else wants to benefit from NIL that is what it was supposed to be about. Not some baloney situation but a true endorsement like the car dealership guy that I don't see anyone giving a hard time to. Does it matter if you want to remain behind the curtain to help or if you want to sell cars or promote your social media. No. It might matter to you or me but as long as it is done within the rules it doesn't matter.

Totally agree. This is about Adam saying he is hanging with celebs and the press eat it up and promote him. I am surprised given his ego though that he hasn't tried to put his name on something. That seems right up his ally. Also done for selfish reasons, but in theory beneficial to SU as well. Tax deductible too! :)

My understanding is that Adam did give money to Tom Brady’s charity and Tom Brady brought Julian Edelman and Jimmy Fallon along. If you watch videos of that day, it contributed quite a bit to the game day experience. Check the comments to Adam’s Facebook post, they are overwhelmingly positive. He was bringing these celebrities long before there was NIL. Once NIL started, he wanted to help. He hired a lawyer specifically to make sure he didn’t break any rules. He also cleared everything through Syracuse University compliance. But, he got shut down before he could start.
WHY did he get shut down, Syverud? I haven't received a really truthful answer.

My piecemeal understanding of this (which may be wrong) is Kent wasn't exactly thrilled with how AW was conducting himself (whether it was within university compliance or not) and then the NCAA did a roadshow presentation on NIL and related promotion and it included some vignettes of AW as examples of what NOT to do/potential violations. After that surfaced, Kent got real cold feet and Weitsman was told via intermediaries to not do certain things/tone other things down. AW wanted to meet with Kent to discuss directly and reached out but calls were not returned by the Chancellor's office. AW then took his ball (checkbook) and went home.

Someone please correct me if that isn't entirely correct.

Like Adam or not, seems like a giant miss by Syracuse (which I'm still hoping can be corrected). It's also frustrating that our school seems concerned with the ncaa while so many other schools don't seem to give a %&%&.

Dealing with the NCAA is like dealing with a lot of bureaucracies.

e.g. For example, the IRS... let's say your company is tax-audited and they find a few issues on the audit and levy some fines.

You pay the fee and correct the disclosure error(s).

What's the likelihood you are audited again within the next 5 years??

Almost 100%.

We have 2 rounds of sanctions with the NCAA in the last 10 years. Like or dislike Kent, he has good reason to be skiddish of the NCAA.

Kent is solid he just doesn't get it and needs to let the people that run compliance. FYI the same people that Adam says he passed EVERYTHING by before doing something make the decision.
Kent needs to focus on getting Syracuse ranked higher academically and stay out of what he doesn't know.

You mean the same compliance people that approved activity that made it into an NCAA NIL and promotion presentation of what NOT to do?

I am sure questions were asked internally on the hill... or maybe it was activity that had already been curtailed?

Im just going by the post on this board what Adam said. I believe there was a solid article in the PS that discussed the fact that he didnt do anything without getting SU compliance to sign off. I could be wrong but from everything that i have read he was doing it the right way JUST not the way that Kent wanted it done.

All I am saying is you are assuming the compliance folks were 100% correct in clearing his activities.

That might be an incorrect assumption if some of those activities wound up in the NCAA presentation as example "bad" behavior as reported.

Tough to know for sure without all the details, but it sounds like we may have approved some stuff we shouldn't have.

Of course, it's also quite possible the NCAA was just setting detailed guidance as they went along and it was the first confirmation of "don't do this".

If that were the case, there would be no reason for the school to blame Adam. They should be blaming the people it was a okay to do. If that were the case.

Agreed.

If I had to guess, they were more concerned AW was gonna push the envelope and they were really uncomfortable with that. The obvious concern being Cuse could be slapped again by the NCAA and made an example of as what not to do... Especially if the NCAA was "making it up as they went along" with regards to guidance on NIL and promotion.

The NIL and Promotion presentation that included the AW examples was likely a shot across the bow warning from the NCAA - or at least that was maybe how the school was taking it?

i.e. Deal with this or we will.

That may be an overly-scared response, but I also don't think AW making it into the presentation was completely random. It sent a message.

I can see both sides of the argument.

What is unfortunate is that there has not been any dialogue to try and find common ground and consensus between both parties (AW and Kent/BoT) on a way forward until now. I certainly wish you success in that endeavor.

Our sudden downturn in recruiting was not JB's fault. It was highly predictable. How many ACC kids are going to think Syracuse first? What exciting rivalries would they get to play in at Cuse? For you newbies, Cuse vs GT was once the biggest rivalry in the land.

As to the bigger picture. We used to criticize GT for having a paid team. Now that every power conf. team is a paid team my interest is going downhill.

Just because you don't want to believe it doesn't make it true. Multiple people with way more credibility than you have said he wasn't working as hard as other coaches in the later years.
