NIL

Ultimately what will stop two schools playing each other in a winner take all pot of money tournament ala TBT? If the NCAA is going to be feckless why can't Syracuse/GTown sponsored by Cadillac pay the winning team 50k per player or something?

I am no lawyer or expert on this, but it seems like you couldn't do that because the money would be specifically for playing, rather than any NIL deal.

don’t give them any ideas.

As far as i can tell there are only two things that kids cant be paid for.

Signing with a school or transfering

Game performance

For now. The supreme court is daring that to change through congressional action.

The NIL as we all know will be for performance for players for the most part. This facade will be torn down unless congress creates specific rules on it.

Thinking of a couple points that may not have already been mentioned

-It will bring the total "shadow money in the system" into the forefront. Sure some endorsement deals will be totally mispriced off the bat, but then it will normalize. What will athletes actually earn? I could imagine the best players earning a solid 6 figures, but the 5th starter on a normal team earning $5-10K/year.

-This might change the dynamic of players leaving early. Hypothetically speaking, if you're a popular player, would you stay at school for $50K of NIL income vs. taking your chances overseas/G-league for $100K? I'm just spitballing the numbers but you get the tradeoff

Can all players use the schools trademark? If not, this could cause a little jealousy.I guess I’m a little confused as to how this all works.

SU has told the athletes that they would most likely be able too but they have to get permission just to cover all the bases. I doubt SU would say ok to some players like buddy and then tell others no. That would cause issues.

So is the school getting a cut and the player getting their cut?

i don’t know but my guess would be SU isn’t getting a cut. This type of thing isn’t going to be a windfall so for SU it wouldnt make a dent anyways.

Well it says the Playerstrunk has a deal with the school. That’s why I was wondering who gets what.

The Boeheim factor probably changes the optics of Buddy using the logo vs the dad/coach situation. just spitballing but maybe that was telegraphed by Jim Boeheim. They are paying him millions, the kids are at school for free. Who knows

is there a scenario where the Boeheim brand makes sense for him to stay another year in Syracuse vs being a second rounder? This NIL situation is going to change what makes sense for the guy who is a local legend but a fringe NBA player.

Great point. This could slow down the exodus of non-senior players to the NBA.

Yeah, I have to imagine that Buddy likely gets a certain percentage of $$$ from the vendor deal. Vendors have to pay a pretty handsome licensing fee, trademark, etc. costs with any brand item that is the property of Syracuse University, or any brand of any kind. Not to mention, the material, production costs, overhead, etc. associated with same.

Likey the typical/standard business model exists in this case.

It would be a Title IX issue, particularly if they let men do it and not women, and it will only take one denial of a woman player for it to get to the courts.

it's a huge nugget to give for free by the university if they allow them to use the logo, w approval.
