No Tourney for SU next year?

I don't see why anybody would be bothered by what JB said there.

If John Thompson II made those same comments, people would be applauding him. In fact, he was a staunch adversary of such "reforms" as Prop 48, in terms of how that "adversely" impacted athletic opportunity.

Personally, I think the Secretary's perspective is idyllic, and off-base.

Just listened to his press confirm. No issues with anything jb said. He is pissed about being taken out of context. What is wrong with that. He was also being used as an example of the coach that only cares about winning and not about graduating his players which is clearly not true.

Throw in the fact that its an absolute joke that our clown of an education secretary doesnt even have his facts straight and would go out and make comments like this is appalling, and people wonder why we hate politicians.

I can literally picture Biden beating the out of that a##wipe.

This is all we need to know:

Statement from Syracuse University:

The Syracuse Univeristy Athletics Department Communications office released the following statement as a follow up to men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim’s remarks regarding the basketball program’s APR following Thursday's NCAA Tournament game:

Under the existing APR rules, the Syracuse University men’s basketball program is eligible for postseason competition. The department continually monitors the APR and projects that men’s basketball will meet the guidelines for postseason competition for 2012-13.

Everything is just useless speculation.

It's what the media and politicians of all stripes do all the time - throw out soundbytes to move a story or view in one direction without telling the whole story. They rely on a good portion of the public not taking the time to understand an issue - just as we saw earlier in this thread.

Not sure how that helps your APR.

The kid has a choice, he goes to classes or he sits. You have to take away the thing he desires the most and if Boeheim or any other coach continues to play a kid who isn't going to class then it's obvious what priority that coach is taking. Now, if the kid continues to not go and sits yes that will effect the APR if he ends up failing.

I believe that the APR is decent in theory but there are way too many variables out there for it really to be a judge on how well a school is doing academically with its student athletes. SEC schools just pass the kids and it's no problem because they are passing but if you have any kind of academic pride you make sure the kids are really going to classes and have all the resources that are available to them. This just give everybody an "A" crap is just that, crap but the bonehead that heads the education system for our country won't see it like that because those A's sure look pretty nice on his record. I swear, substance doesn't matter anymore and if you can play the game and know how to BS like the SEC can do in spades, you're fine.

Isn't funny how they don't do this for football? Hmm...I wonder why?

you're kidding right? coaches are paid millions of dollars to win games.

Or they can lose millions by not having their team not in the NCAA's due to the APR numbers. Everybody wants everything but it just isn't that easy and having good players, a good coach, kids that really do their work, profs that make the kids do their work, and players that stay out of trouble and have to graduate above the student population is asking a lot when you do everything on the up and up and yes, I forgot win.

That's not the issue here.

The debate has to do with when the season is OVER and the player is projected to be a top NBA draft pick.

He hurts his earning potential if he sacrifices all of the workouts and everything in order to attend classes for the remainder of that semester - classes which are completely meaningless at that point unless he's a senior. The coaches and university have absolutely no control over what that person decides to do with his life. And if they try to convince him to stay to finish out the semester, they're only doing so for selfish reasons - they're not looking out for the best interests of the young person, they're just trying to cover their own butts.

So why should the university and program be punished because a kid decides to put his education on hold in order to maximize his financial potential? It's ludicrous.

JB's Bill Gates analogy is spot-on.

I love syracuse and the staff (although I think JB is an absolute D'bag as a person).
As an alum and season ticket holder I am getting concerned.
It feels as though every media member has their guns pointed at us, I am not sure we can win this battle.
Gottlieb was on tv 2 nights ago saying that if he was a recruit he would never come to Cuse.
The list feels like it's getting longer.

The list includes:
rat lawyer
1 gay ball boy
1 drunk brother
1 pedophile lier
1 jailed gay crackhead
1 national sports news station
1 Obama cabinet member
1 SU professor
1 former player

forget anyone?

I agree with you, I was talking about a kid during the season not going to classes like many believe Melo was doing.

Good thing we never wanted butt hurt Gottlieb anyway.

That list sucks dude. We cant help it if the dredge of society takes aim at our school, and yes I include Arne Duncan in that because I find it insane that a Cabinet member would make an incorrect comment with such damning implications only to be proven wrong.

Gottlieb was on tv 2 nights ago saying that if he was a recruit he would never come to Cuse.

Nothing to argue about with that statement. Gottlieb was a recruit at one time and as it turned out he never came here. In fact he wasn't recruited by JB.

It's almost like we're becoming Frankenstein and the villagers are getting their torches ready. Emotion seems to be taking over and common sense and getting the real facts are no longer part of the equation.

We should do this with Boeheim and the cuse players like they do the hitler utube.

Nothing to argue about with that statement? I usually dont get offended by Gottlieb but that statement is bullsh!t. Just analyze the games clown.

Well, with the way Americans get their news, and their incapability or unwillingness (for the most part) to do their own assessments, the only thing they are gonna hear are the sound bites.

Look, I think Gottlieb is a putz.

But Gottlieb can say that he'd never come to SU as a recruit (and we can make fun saying it's sour grapes and all that) but I think we can agree that a young person considering where to go for college (on a bball scholarship or otherwise) should be VERY much concerned about his potential school's reputation - as I said above, the sound bites are what people remember. In particular, an athlete needs to be sure there's a potential post-season available to him.

They mentioned during the telcast that because of the APR SU will not be eligible for the tourney next year? Is this a certainty? Anyone know more?
Posted this yesterday. SU is NOT the only team in trouble.

"According to Christine Brennan of USA Today, if next years APR standards were applied to this years field, the following teams would be ineligible: UConn, SU, Florida St, Indiana. S. Miss, St. Louis, Colorado, Colorado St., Miss. Valley St, New Mexico St., Norfolk St., Ohio and Bona. That's almost a whole bracket!"

I was talking about Gottlieb not being recruited to come here when HE was a recruit. You know, like irony that he would say something like that? It was a joke . . . . . aw, forget about it . . . .
