Northeastern Postgame

My theory is that #4 is affecting 1,2,5,9, and 10.
Interestingly enough the only big game we won he didn't sub as much. That was Tennessee. Swap out as many mins for Sadiq/Betsey/Kiyan with Freeman and the ingredients and recipe look better. The baker though is prob a problem.

Sadiq was soooo much better earlier in the year working outside in. Brutal in the post
Yet another reason for everyone to temper their enthusiasm about freshmen. I read a lot of posts here over the past year pining for White to arrive and be a major contributor.

He is not.

I think it's more understandable in the NBA. No one game in an 82 game regular season is terribly important, and typically a coach's top job is to appropriately manage the minutes of their best players.

It's funny because when I look at the box score after games our minutes allocation usually makes sense. But how Red gets there can be baffling sometimes.
I think Red realized in the 1st half that his habit of subbing three guys in at the same time can be an issue. Hopefully we don't see that anymore.

I mentioned in game thread that I sat first row behind the SU bench yesterday. Here’s a few things -
1. The guys are very engaged at the beginning of the game. The first 2 media timeouts, red was yelling at them “listen up, listen up, listen up and then went nuclear and said are you listening?!” It’s like they didn’t even care who they were playing or what they were being told
2. When they were losing, the players didn’t talk to each other at all. When winning, they were talking constantly
3. The bench is so supportive including Donnie. Constantly cheering and “defense chant” throughout the entire game
4. Red is always looking to make a substitute and I don’t understand why. It’s like he feels bad that certain guys aren’t playing or something. He needs to have a much better feel for the clock because every other possession he is looking to put someone in. Hes gotta be better with this. It’s like the game is moving wayyyy too fast for him
5. Brenden S Drew up defenses constantly in huddles and was yelling from the bench exactly what play NE was running and the guys just simply didn’t listen. He was getting annoyed as was I when literally he’s given them the answers to the test and they still weren’t acing it
6. Red said “Akir is just so light” to the coaches meaning he couldn’t hold his ground on some fouls
7. Donnie was highlight dunking in layup line and crowd and players were going nuts so that was good
8. Drives me crazy there are no ticket promotions or anything for these snooze fest games. There was 6 or 7 sections that didn’t have a person in them. Get creative and sell more tickets.
9. Red stressed “constant on ball and on man pressure” constantly throughout the game and timeouts. He kept saying that’s where the cuts were hurting them and getting them layups and open looks.
10. This is me not defending Red, but these kids act like they don’t need coaching. They really do. They probably listened to the coaching staff 25% of the time. I’m not even kidding. Maybe it was the opponent but the amount of effort was significant from red and especially BS, he was all over these guys with a great plan and they didn’t really listen.

I strongly encourage during these types of non conference games that if you can get to sit anywhere near the bench, you would see a lot of stuff you can’t see on tv.
So sounds like exactly what I said last night, they don’t respect red

This is going to sound bad but it isn’t meant to be but from what you describe it sounds like Red is a perfect assistant coach and is just in over his head. Seems like he knows what to do and when to do it but has no clue how to translate that to on the court performance or get the kids to understand what he wants.

After this year Red needs to really look in the mirror and decide what he was does he want to be a life long assistant at a P4 level school or does he want to drop down a level and really learn to be a head coach. Nothing is wrong with either option but I think that is his reality

Great post, great stuff. I too was right behind the bench, but the northeastern bench as my good friend is the HC and this post will sum up where I am certainly but also the Cuse malaise many are feeling and speaking to.

One part that you may not have heard about is that they are offering $13 tickets for any of these December games so at least they are trying.

This game played out exactly as I expected it to, with us once more playing down to the level of competition as much as we play up to our level competition at other times.

For much of the evening I was next to and with Reggie Williams of Georgetown fame and more recently coaching fame, as well as an old Duke star whose son plays for Northeastern now, this on top of a few other great basketball minds

Made for interesting conversations. Some of this is my observations, and some of this is theirs. Syracuses individual talent is most certainly there to be a moderate to higher level team, but the parts are not fitting as a cohesive successful whole. At least not yet, maybe ever

Some of that is coaching with the struggles you mention, as love him or hate him red does not have that “it“ quality that commands attention. This, despite the fact they appear to really like/love him. It is above my pay grade to figure out whether or not this bodes well for future successes, it would certainly seem to make sense though that it is going to be challenging at the very least.

Just have to make the tournament for him to have a chance, and they still have time to gel to do it was the point being made. I’ll leave it to everybody else to break down the specifics of the game and keep to the generalities.

The biggest thing that stuck out with the lack of cohesiveness and playing as a team. Maybe because of the unending substitution patterns, certainly some because of the new paradigm of basically a new team every year, regardless, it felt like I was watching a team that I’m no longer connected to or barely connected to out there

Some of this is certainly rooted in a “who moved my cheese“, “get off my lawn“ mentality, but I thought it is, nonetheless, pertinent to the discussions we all have on here.

I always call this game my schizophrenia game as I invariably wear some northeastern red with my Syracuse garb. But I usually sit there in my Switzerland mode acting neutral barely cheering, and, of course, always and ultimately rooting for the Syracuse win.

However, this is the first time ever I felt something different, felt myself actually cheering for my good friend and his success more than “my” teams. Because this barely or no longer feels as much like “my team”.

This next part is not just a Syracuse discussion, but more and observation on the state of the “college” game these days across the board in all sports as we all discussed the never-ending and insurmountable challenges for Billy at Northeastern with every single good player of his leaving over the last five years for greener($) pastures.

But it extends to us, and for me and the Cuse with the disconnect felt from all this having nearly a new team every year essentially, not watching three and four year players develop anymore, no longer feeling the same degree of connection to “my team” the result, some or most of the kinship gone, and of course JB not roaming the sidelines………it all collectively has significantly eroded my personal connection to the program to the degree that for the first time I felt myself rooting for Northeastern to pull the upset.

I was not in a good place last night as a result. Like with any uncomfortable, feeling or situation we try and avoid where possible, and I have successfully avoided thinking, or largely dealing with it however long it’s been going on now.

Yesterday and last night it was unavoidable.

So the point of this diatribe is to contribute to the discussion of where things are both individually with red this season and with the “college”game at large. I think they’re inevitably and invariably connected.

Our malaise with reduced attendance (this is the first game I’ve hit this year after having season tickets forever), doesn’t help the greater cause in the search for success of the team. The NIL/portal stuff creates this negative vicious cycle so contrary to my usual take on things, my takes have become more of a glass half empty both on red and his chance for success here, or anybody else for that matter, extending as well across the board of whatever the college game is now.

Anyway, apologies as that is probably too long too disjointed and somewhat disconnected to the discussion but That’s where my head is currently at.

Back to rooting for Syracuse but more tepidly no longer revolving my life around games and game times.

This suggests that there is no player leadership on the team. A player that is respected has to kick bootie.

Thanks for sharing your observations, BD.

The stuff about not listening to Red and staff seems to jive with a team that was clearly capable of playing high level, pressure defense and hang with/beat Houston/Tenn some nights, and then play like we've seen lately. Discipline, accountability, ability to motivate are implicated.

Makes me think of this:

They respect him and love him but they act like they don’t need the help.
Any insight as to why this might be?? I mean, we lost to Hofstra. And some players on the team I think are too aware of their limitations and it affects their play. But they don’t need the help? Just curious where the disconnect is, if they do respect Red.

I've said my piece about the direction of things and it's not good but I need to refute this circular reference that so many ACC teams are better than us because of this or that. We are only 1 of 5 ACC teams that have actually beaten a ranked team. Outside of Duke, Louisville, and UNC we are also the only team that has played 3 ranked opponents, 4 if you count Kansas that "dipped" out of the rankings for the few days when we played them and are back to #17...

Cal who is some crazy success story at 10-1 has not won a game away from home and has played 10 home games and 1 away game so far. Virginia and VaTech haven't played a ranked team at all yet, not even close to one.

I think the writing is on the wall for Autry but I also think we will beat alot of the middle of the ACC and not be a bottom feeder like last year. Problem is that 10-8 and an 8 seed in the tourney isn't enough anyway. Even sneaking into the tourney play in game is garbage with this roster.
Well, you see the “bright side” of other ACC teams vis a vis us. Of course since those games against ranked teams we’ve looked radically worse. I see we’ve struggled mightily at home against teams ranked below 200, and other ACC teams winning handily vs that level of competition. So I guess it’s all how you look at things.

Brilliant post, sir. Thank you. You captured a ton of what I've been experiencing in recent years.

All the best to you & yours to close out the holidays.

If they respected him they'd play harder and listen. They don't.
There is something else that motivates besides respect. Fear. And that is something that I don't think they do. They aren't worried about him benching them. They aren't afraid of him yelling at them. And I have to wonder a bit if getting a money has something to do with that. Although, other coaches aren't having that problem.

#5 infuriates me just reading that! A coach who puts in the needed work to study the opponents, and these “kids” who are making boat loads of money and probably in some cases don’t want to be bothered looking at game film, can’t even listen to the coach. Insanity

For me, this says a lot of where we are as a program now. I took a nap at the half of yesterdays game. I half expected us to be behind when I turned it back on. We were up 7, quickly 5, with a couple of minutes left. I used to live for these games. Now, I took a nap at the half. yeah, I'm older but still. We don't know these guys like we "used" to.
