I get a kick out of it when people say they'll stop watching college sports if kids start seeing some money. As if kids aren't seeing money now. A10 basketball players get paid and have been getting paid. Get over yourself.

Just pass an NLI bylaw and get it over with. Or wait for Congress to pass something through that makes you allow it. It really isn't a big deal and it isn't going to change the landscape of college sports. Don't let idiots convince you otherwise.

If they want to get paid, they're going to get taxed on everything - strength & conditioning, meals, gear, food, access to facilities, access to private coaching, all of that is not free and not cheap.

These kids have no idea how good they have it. Yes, they should be able to profit on their name, image and likeness. And yes, that's a long time coming.

But the compensation they have been provided - free education, housing, top-end food, weight room access, medical bills for surgeries, athletic training, free gear, on top of marketing their name/brand on national television numerous times. Those things add up to a lot of money.

All of that stuff is still irrelevant to them making money off their names? They get that free stuff because they provide entertainment for all of us and bring in $$$ to the school providing those benefits. Its a win win for all involved. that is true, but student athletes now can be given unlimited meals and snacks by the schools besides the basic 3 meals included in the meal plan part of a scholarship. Not sure what that amounts too in dollars.

over the past few years what an athlete can have/get has significantly increased.

instead of the typical full ride of tuition, room, board, fees and books, schools can now give them the full cost of attendance which covers other things and can range from about $4k-6k a year.

based upon financial need, an athlete can now also get federal grants such as a pell grant even though they are on scholarship. For some, that can be another $6-7k a year.

they also have full medical coverage which is also provided for 2 years after they leave school.

they also get a specified number of tickets for games.

they get all the sneakers, apparel and gear they want from the company that sponsors the school.

there’s probably something I’m forgetting but whether they should get paid or not, they are certainly getting a lot more right now than your typical full ride of the past.

The NCAA will change to allow players to profit from their endeavors but at some point the players will want a percentage of the revenue and there will be a boycott of March Madness. If athletes are paid at what point are they no longer amateurs? Future P5 college basketall will be far different than the current structure.

If the guy next to me is going to school for free because he plays a sport and then gets to collect money for NLI people are going to squawk about this.

How about the support staff at a school. the mascot, the band, the managers, etc. They will be providing services for free to the school and paying 75k a year to go to Syracuse vs the guy who is getting paid to go to school via housing/food/schooling and gets to collect the NLI.

Once you start paying for highschool and college like i am your outlook on these things change tremendously.

The biggest issue is that recruiting will become the wild west with schools/boosters promising big bucks for their likeness if they come to their school. Not sure how that can be regulated.

That’s not how taxes work for businesses? Do you pay taxes on services offered by your employer? Any $ they make from their likeness would be taxed. That’s it. Anything they pay outside of school (extra trainers) could be a tax write off.

The problem isn’t that there is some compensation, the problem is that the existing compensation hasn’t kept pace with the income being brought in. Add an onerous “amateur” tag to it and keep them from making money that all other students can and you get this. There are concerns with recruiting floodgates and that kind of thing - but that is because the NCAA is toothless now and does a poor job already.

Pushback from booster types is that if name and likeness becomes how they get income all their bags are subject to more interest from the IRS, etc.

I think it's important they separate revenue purely off of name vs revenue that is because of their enrollment at the school. Allowing for name and likeness independently should 100 pct be allowed. There are going to be complications and bad actors but standard policies can deal with that at the schools.

Now when it comes to the overlap with the NCAA and schools they just need to have a royalties agreement for name and likeness on retail items and related to television revenue. It would take time to work it out but once complete I think that is fair. For those with zero professional aspirations it's probably no more than some work study type of money. For those in bigger schools on TV a lot, their number on a Jersey etc they will get more. Royalties being volume driven only with flat rates per SA. For non school affiliated content it's an open market. These kids will still have to keep grades up, not get in trouble and be model humans or they will face the same consequences as today.
