Ohio Postgame Discussion...

It’s funny, of all the criticisms of TD on this board, I would not expect one to be that he can’t throw the deep ball. I mean, it’s probably what he does best. Of course we have to get the offense in sync, and see if we’ve got the WRs to go out and get deep balls , or an OL that can protect long enough for those plays to develop. But I have absolutely no lack of confidence in TD’s ability to drop the ball in on long throws.

the past 2 seasons people complained that TD was in love with the deep ball and had to be better at the short and intermediate stuff. Now it’s the opposite. Says a lot to me.

First game and on the road...overall solid performance.
Open field tackling by Deuce was a clinic.
Our punter stuck two inside the 10.
Lot of "vanilla" plays and schemes on both sides of the ball.
I'd say CUSE looks 5 to 6 wins "good" after that performance.
And there is much room for improvement.
Would love to see about 38,000 at the dome this coming Saturday.

That's what happens when you add a former SEC starter through the portal. We get 3 years of him too. Pretty confident he'll end up being our best portal pickup when all is said and done.
Only if he is going for his masters. He graduated with honors this Spring.

Competent is fine vs Ohio. It won’t be enough against better teams… we need a QB that can burn defenses for selling out. I didn’t see anything from tommy to suggest he’s added a new dimension to his repertoire. If all we’re asking our qb to do is handoff 90% of the time then Garret should be in a clear rotation to see what he can do. Unfortunately at SU, we need more than a game manager to raise the ceiling for the program. Tommy raises the floor with his experience but not sure 5-6 wins is the floor… which is what Dino needs to keep his job.

that being said, we’re sorely missing a Custis/Ishmael type at receiver to complement Taj. That was my biggest disappointment tonight to see nothing from this group. Hope it was just a case of vanilla.

Agreed on the WR concern. Some of it was probably game plan and some probably Devito honing in on Taj but each year we keep hearing that this is the year the WR depth breaks out and it's still mostly 1 guy with some production from a second guy. It's baffling how a team with so many Wrs on the roster struggles so badly to develop any sort of depth.

Appears DB did not want to use to much of the play book.

I fear that this is seeing something we want to see.

The last couple years, there's hasn't been very much more to Dino's playbook than what we saw yesterday.

In fact, I would say he blew the lid off his surprises by calling that slant that went for a long gain.

interested to see what our offense looks like next week when we open up the playbook a bit

Why do people keep saying this? This is year six, and there hasn't been one season when I felt like we had this complex offense that we over-powered people with later in the season.

Even in our 10 win season with Dungey, he was running for his life on broken plays half the time. It was like THAT was our best play.

Reminds me of Coach P days when we just wore down lesser opponents with the run game. Nice to see. Ohio kept the ball for 11 minutes in the first quarter and looked competent in their running game with Tuggle and some of their longer passes. Good early test for our defense.

Unnecessary roughing penalties? Against Ohio U? Gotta curtail those. That said, Sean Tucker got a penalty for going after a defenders knees while blocking and I thought defenders are gonna see that on tape and maybe back off a bit when they see him coming.

Other teams will need to game plan for Tucker and I’m not sure it will help them. He’s a beast. Yes best since Reyes and I’m beginning to think best I’ve seen (Joe Morris was before I watched SU football) In orange.

Tommy had time to throw out there, that’s what needEd to happen. The way Tommy plays minimizes turnovers and keeps us in games. That’s a good floor. With a competent oline I think we’ll see more of his ceiling.

Good win. Beat Rutgers and it’ll look like we’re running down hill by the end of the month.
Good points.

Joe Morris was a cut back runner and could break defenders' ankles when he made his cuts. Different style, highly effective. Did the same in the NFL.

I think as teams plan for Tucker, HCDB gets the other backs more in the game. Different styles of running are harder to prepare for. Same with WRs, variety is good.

My thoughts on Tommy after this game is that he did okay.

He wasn’t great but he wasn’t bad at all. We won this game on the back of Tucker and it should have been obvious that’s who the won game for us on offense.

I really wanted to see Shrader more when our offense feel into a rut for a few possessions and it felt and looked like last season. Wondering if Dino is saving him for later games or if he’s 100% in on TD. Will be interesting to follow in the next couple games.

Taj is….interesting. Watching him on the sidelines is interesting. At multiple times I saw him by himself on the sideline just burst out straight laughing. Like bent over laughing. Talking to no one, with no one around. He also really enjoyed talking to a couple of the female bobcat fans.

With that being said about Taj and talking to the bobcat fans….that seems to be a team problem. Happened several times DURING the game players were responding and talking to fans that were right behind the bench. I feel this is an issue that Dino needs to correct before heading to more hostile environments

Overall, happy to leave Athens with a win. We will need to play far better than we did last night to beat Rutgers

After we scored to go up 19-6 in the third quarter, that's when I wanted to give Shrader the rest of the game.

Because we literally ran 2 different kinds of run plays and the route concepts we put out were vanilla too. i find it hard to believe that Dino who’s on the hottest of seats wouldn’t mix it up and is going to rely on 2 different types of runs all season to keep his job.

Tell me a time in the past that it has been much different.

Agreed. And his short game was overall good, especially when he tucked the ball and ran. I thought he made better choices last night than I had seen the past two years.

The game thread shows I was willing to give him slack, then I was concerned and wanted Shrader, and then calmed down after his first two drives to open the 2nd half. Shame on me. (Kudos to Eric for pointing out the obvious). The long ball may need a little work, but in last night's game the threat was sufficient and TD was certainly NOT living/dieing with the long ball, he played the short game and was improved over the past two years. It's amazing how much better a QB is when he has a solid front protecting him.

Hot take: I think our RB depth is the best we’ve had since ‘98 (Brown, McIntosh, Mungro, Johnson) and Tucker is the best back we’ve had since Reyes. We didn’t even really need to utilize Howard or Adams in this game, and they are both starting caliber backs.
Oline was opening up some nice running lanes. Ohio’s Dline was kinda weak. Rutgers will be a much bigger test.

did Dakota Davis play at all?

I think we’ll find out a lot about this team and what kind of season we’re in for next week. Hopefully we get 40k+.

Tell me a time in the past that it has been much different.
The first few seasons of Dino’s reign it was much different. we relied more heavily on the short passing game than anything else, which personally i loved. Erv Phillips finding the hole in the zone and sitting down and waiting for the ball was a staple every saturday.

Meh. We’ve not seen TD with a competent OL but for one game where we didn’t need to pass

I’m hopeful

Well at least you don’t define the 11 completions as deep throws :). That’s a solid starting point lol.

Taj was overthrown in the end zone too, but can’t remember how deep a throw that was.

If you don’t think after this game stronger teams aren’t going to game plan for us by stacking the box and making Tommy throw deep I don’t know what to tell you. And if we only have one deep threat that’s a problem, whether he’s overthrown or not.

Ohio was starting to stack more often later in the game. They saw it too. We were lucky enough to still be able to run but that’s not going to be true, game in/game out during conference play. Now, if we throw to the TE or do some things successfully we didn’t really see against Ohio. Maybe it’s a non-issue. But until then it’s a reasonable question IMO.

It’s weird there’s always a couple posters that any type of analysis of the team they see as a personal threat to TD and DB.

Bwahaha… no.

There’s a lot more. We saw like 5 plays and half of which were new to the Dino era

That’s because that was his strength?

We have Mac level starting WRs which is an issue. Maybe one of the young guns shows out with their size i would hope they would get a chance. ACC teams are going to force us to pass the ball. Our WRs are going to have plenty of opportunities the question is can they beat their guys one on one. At this point im hopeful but not confident.

I think it's possible that Dino is having Adams and Howard earn some but that is not the only reason. Lutz is good running and receiving but very good on the blitz pickup. Tucker is the featured back. Back 2 is the multi purpose back. Adams is not the guy who will blitz pickup and Howard is not the receiver out of the backfield. Lutz does all three.

Did the offense ever really go into a rut? I think we only had 2 punts, and neither was a 3 and out.

I thought TD was fine. I don’t know if the game will ever slow down enough for him to be a full progression QB, but he was good on RPO. Made some really nice passes (slant to Queeley was a beauty), managed the game well. The only disappointing throw was missing the open TD to Taj, but it happens. The deep balls were pretty good, just missed. I think Jackson lost the ball in the air. He even completed 2 passes on the run, which seem like the first 2 to me that I can ever recall.

Right, my gripe is that he “managed the game”

we had a stretch in the late second quarter where we drove and then got down the red zone and we couldn’t get anything done.

I’m not saying Tommy did bad. I’m just saying I would have liked to see the change of pace there to see what Shrader has or doesn’t have.

IMO Tommy didn’t show that he is the clear #1 after that game. That was just a good game manage situation and hand it off to your stud running back.

In the end it got us our win, I just would have liked to see Shrader get more playing time in a game like that, if that makes sense
