Let's hope FSU and Clemson and the SEC aren't making googly eyes at each other right now. Losing them massively changes the equation for the ACC.
Florida carries way, way, way more weight than aTm in deciding whether another school from their state joins the SEC.

The irony is that what makes the ACC stronger now is ultimately what makes the ACC weaker long term. Having schools that are attractive as expansion candidates to the SEC and B1G while having really no ability to expand to keep up in the arms race.

I think the Big 12 unbelievably will outlive the ACC. And kudos to the Big 12 leadership after all the crap they’ve been through the past 5+ years. The Big 12 still has room to expand for football as there are teams in the Midwest and west that fit the conferences profile and offer new markets. There’s nowhere for the ACC to go now.
There's nothing in the GoR that prevents the ACC from expanding. Any new schools would just have to sign it. It's been discussed that the ESPN TV contract (which is totally separate from the GoR) would go up on a pro rata basis, with each new school adding an additional share to the contract.

I’m aware of that. There just aren’t any schools of value left to expand with. The B1G and SEC keep adding marquee schools / markets while the ACC watches.

That's a totally different issue. We don't know (and may never know) what the ACC was doing behind the scenes about new members. While there was nothing obviously happening, that doesn't necessarily mean there wasn't anything happening at all.

I moved BYU up to tier 3, but could never justify them in tier 2.
The question you need to ask re: BYU is how many other schools on that list would have survived as an independent, let alone perform better than they did.

It's kind of apples to oranges. You're comparing a conference that's been raided 5 times by the B1G/SEC. Take the top 5 ACC programs away, and then compare the ACC and Big 12.
Why in the world would I do that? That isn't the Big 12 conference. This is. And people on this board are saying that the big 12 has passed the ACC. They aren't saying that the old Big 12 has passed the Acc. They are saying this version of the big 12 has passed the ACC with the Pac ad ons.

I can't speak for anyone else. Currently, the ACC is still ahead of the Big 12. But it's an artificial lead, one given by the GOR. Posters keep saying 10 years is a long way away. I'm 54 years old, and 10 years seem to pass so quickly. 10 years for a educational institution is a blink in time. How confident are you that the Syracuse administration with be proactive and sharp in keeping us relevant in major college sports? Because that's how they are in all phases of operation.

At that time they were good (Matty Ice, et al.); they played in the 2007 and 2008 championship games and were Atlantic Division runners-up in 2005 and 2006, but then the semi-insane AD alienated Tom O'Brien (making him leave for NC State) and fired Al Skinner and Jeff Jadgodzinski.
I thought this really wasn’t about wins and losses. You’re saying bc was in an up cycle competitively speaking and that outweighed the other negatives?

I want BB back in the Big East. And football to have a conference just not by Indy like Uconn and Umass.

The ACC sucks. They finally fix the ed up schedule that has led to ZERO visits from Miami to the Dome and it falls apart.
it hasnt fallen apart yet, duct tape is still holding strong

the university is doing as much as they can with facilities

hard to say as being independent back before the media right pricing went through the roof they did ok, but that was also when most conferences made around the same amount

LOL I am older than you. And I have actually thought, by the time this explodes on us, I won't either be here or won't care. As for what Syracuse will or won't be able to do about any of this, circumstances control us a lot more than we control them over the course of time.

if they were tier 2 they wouldnt have had to settle for a big 12offer
This. They were a free agent FFS. If they added that type of value to a conference, they would have been gobbled up already.

Jeesh.

its like 800 million dollars
That much? I saw one recent article saying it was unclear exactly how much it was. If the numbers keep going up for the SEC and B1G, that could be 5 years worth of money before too long. Who knows what kind of crazy boosters would be able to help too. Raising 100 million for facilities seems to be pretty easy for these programs.

Could they block it if the rest of the conference and Florida politiicans want it? If Florida politicians could force UF to play FSU when they didn't want to, I would think they could.

I'm just speaking in hypotheticals. Nobody saw all the moves coming that have happened recently or concieved of it happening so fast. I don't think anything is impossible at this point.

That exact thought has occurred to me too, dash.

If GOR holds for awhile, by the time it all falls apart for us, I may be eating all my meals through a straw and thinking Ben is still the coach. And that is a best case scenario.

You need to stop living in the past man! Big East basketball died a long time ago.

The PAC 12 had members that wouldn't have voted them in at the time when geography still mattered to conferences. Nobody else was going to take a team where they were located.

Not really we’re just not in it. Nova and UConn have both won multiple titles since Syracuse left their home to be a red headed stepchild in the ACC.

They were in a up-cycle and if the AD had retained his sanity or retired sooner than he did, they would be in a much better position than they are now. The AD fired Jagodzinski for saying he'd entertain a request to interview for a pro job. He didn't interview for it. He didn't try to play one team against another a là Frank Beamer. He just said that if the team asked him he'd sit for an interview.

They also represented an expansion of the ACC's footprint further up the coast, in the first expansion beyond the Mason-Dixon line.

last i checked there are others sports in an athletic department
Except for March Madness games no other sport matters in terms of the almighty dollar, which is driving approximately 100% of this lunacy

All bets are off when the politicians start getting involved. That said, FSU ight have a tough time finding support because they don't bring in any new markets. Would Mississippi State get in if they were trying to apply now instead of being an historic member?

I don't know. If the SEC wasn't interested maybe the B1G would be since they have no southern presence. It's the wild wild west. As things shift from cable to streaming, I wonder if strategies change.
