Our new Co-OC and QB coach

I believe he's still getting paid by Texas.. Just like Charlie Strong..

Sterlin Gilbert is the actual OC/QB coach at South Florida. I doubt he gives that up to come to Syracuse and be a Co-OC.
He would need to be the guy.
But from what I can find, he is only making 100k at USF. Surely we could give him more money than that.

that salary can't be right

Not really worried about USF fans disgruntled about play calling because you'd have 3 offensive minds game planning here

I think it's because of the buyout from USF to Texas as whobut03 mentioned

I would assume so as well. Texas paid him 850k per. Not sure how much was guaranteed, but he had a lot of leverage at the time they were trying to hire him.

Yeah I'm not sure. However... ALL in on SG

Actually, I wonder if it's that low cause he's still getting money from Texas. In 2016 he was supposed to have signed a 3 year deal worth $850K with Texas. It may have ended up topping a million per.

Read comments above... haha

If we bring in another that shares the OC title that has to mean there is something important structurally there for HCDFB. I wonder what that is for him.

Perhaps it’s so when you lose one you can more easily absorb the change.

On another note, Derek Dooley is making $900K at Mizzou to be their OC and QB coach. He's the highest paid assistant in school history.

Sterlin Gilbert is a guy I would love to see take over as HC when Dino takes his inevitable ride to greener pastures.
I think as long as Dino can hire his partner Matt Mattox USF OL coach, we could get him in. Matt and Sterlin have been together at every stop.
We have room for 2 full time coaches that would be a perfect fit. Just have to do some switching around as far as duties go.
This would be the homerun hire I would go head over hills for.

But to not get my hopes too high I will just assume Dino hires a couple guys from the Southland conference.

Gilbert had insane leverage on UT. The school was desperate to overhaul its offense after hiring a conservative, defensive minded coach in Strong who brought over Shawn Watson, who proved to be not up to the task when not coaching Teddy Bridgewater. UT was caught off guard when their first choice, Sonny Cumbie, the OC from TCU, turned them down. UT/Coach Strong were scrambling, and they turned to Gilbert, who promptly turned them down. UT panicked and put on the full court press, flying up not just Strong, but the athletic director and the actual school president to Gilbert's house. They ultimately gave him an offer he couldn't refuse, and he came to UT along with Mike Mattox, the OL coach (and another Briles/Babers guy).

I have to think reuniting with Babers is appealing to Gilbert. He may have forged a good relationship with Strong, but Strong at his heart will always be a more conservative, defense oriented coach - and as head coach, his mentality will have final say. A sticking point might be Mattox, who Gilbert would most certainly want to come along. Mattox has been OL coach and run game coordinator at UT and USF. He and Lynch would greatly overlap, and eventually you will run into a problem of too many cooks in the kitchen. Mattox may not want a step down in responsibility.

I'm not sure what juggling possibilities there are on the staff and who is able to coach what, but personally, I'd love to see Gilbert and Mattox come aboard.
