let's be clear, K didn't do anything wrong. Not to JB and not to Syracuse. He got a kid he thinks will help him and Duke. Exactly what he should be doing. They actually have an opening at the 5.

I'm just gonna say that Coach K reminds me of a guy in Nathan's parable of the Lamb. (And please no one freak out about religion on the board -- I'm just using the Bible as a literary reference)

In the Book of Samuel, King David essentially sends his friend Uriah to certain death in war, so he can get his wife Bathsheba. The prophet Nathan tells the King the following parable:
“There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds. But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which he had bought and nourished...And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”

Coach K views everyone else in college basketball, including his old friend JB, as a Uriah. Maybe that's his job, but he does.

1987 had the number 1 or 2 recruit in the nation in our recruiting class in Derrick Coleman.
I mean if we had a 5 Star stud in this class I think people would be a little more optimistic.

Our biggest issue right now is talent.
I think if you give JB talent he can coach it well and get a lot of it.

We don’t have the horses. To compete with the best in our conference. Tape was just going to give us more quality depth.
His loss isn’t a back breaker but if we lose Hughes to the NBA it’s basiclaly relying on Braswell or Guerrier to be elite.

Our backcourt will win some games and lose them as well.
If we lose Hughes I predict 17-14 next year. With him 19-12.
Coleman wasn't the #1 or #2 recruit when we got him back on thanksgiving of '86. He was way down the list. He came on like a demon as the season went on. But that is the truth. We had two not one, back up guards. We had a center that hadn't done a thing and a swing forward that really couldn't score. Going in to the season, things were not so bright.

Wish the kid well but wouldnt surprise me if he quits midseason due to lack of playing time

My opinion, QG can be a elite player for us. I think both Buddy and Joe will be more consistent and better next year. My opinion. I think Marek can be really good for us next year. And I liked what I saw from Sidibe the last 6 games. We have to build some depth. Anyone is free to disagree. I couldn't care less. Jb usually does pretty well with guys that have game experience. We have guys that have game experience.

But doesn’t it say something when a kid would rather sit on bench somewhere rather than play for us? It starts at the top
The kid doesn't think he will sit the bench for Duke. He thinks he will play as much there as here. And I think he is probably correct if that is what he thinks. Add to the fact that he is from North Carolina, and they are Duke, not hard to see why he chose them over us.

We can expect improvement from most of the returnees, but losing Hughes will be much bigger than some realize. Quincy and Marek can’t spread the floor like Hughes, so opponents will simply collapse on our guards and make it more difficult for them to shoot. And since neither is very good at cresting their own shot or getting to the rim, well, you get the picture.

Guys, we arent done. We didnt spend a ton of resources or “energy” on this guy. He visited, we recruited him for a few months and while it looked like we were in the drivers seat, he committed to basically the hometown team who is on top of the basketball world. Shocking? Absolutely not. Plus, the academics of duke and getting a grad degree from there. Come on

Still, we got these guys at one time. I am not near as down as some on the board for next year with the team we have. I was a fan of the program in 1986 when we lost Pearl, Raf Addison and Wendell Alexis. We went to the NC the next year. No one saw that. I actually like the kids we have back. Time will tell.
i'm with you. i think we have a solid starting five, and the makings of at least an acceptable bench

i know the staff seems to be out there looking for one ,but i never thought we needed another big. i would like to see a 4th guard even if only for practice purposes, but other than that i think jb can win games with this unit.

It's not a huge loss if they have other plans.

A 4th guard and a replacement for Hughes. A three that can shoot. I am also high on the center position next year.

This is the same team with best our best player leaving. What was our record? Will get will killed in the post again. With the resources that this program has not acceptable

How many more games would have won if our bigs weren't fouled out or in heavy foul trouble? at least 3 maybe 4.

We need another big

it will feature many of the same players but make no mistake, it will be a different team

I think too many folks are vastly underestimating what Tape can do. Everyone's excited about Sidibe's 6-game spurt, but consider the jump Tape made when he went from 4.4 ppg in his sophomore year to 11.3 in junior year. If you want to question Ivy League competition, look at a three-game stretch in that junior year where he averaged just shy of 17 ppg against P5 schools BC, Rutgers, and Northwestern. This guy is not some scrub.

Duke has 4-star center Mark Williams coming in, ranked in the Top 30. It's no lock he's gonna start, let alone dominate. I think Tape is the better player from Day 1. I also think he's a better offensive player than Sidibe, but there's no point in arguing that anymore. If Coach K called out of nowhere for this guy, there's a reason.

Explain your optimism. There is a long list of big men that we missed and list continues to grow

I suppose there is a big in the portal from Seton Hall that had some offensive upside at 1 point...

I dont know that im underrating him. Your point about him not having much competition for pt is a good point though.

He’d be a great fit here now that JB priorities spacing over defense.

Apparently charging the open corner like a rabid bull has not been an effective sales pitch.
