Petro To UNC

There is this and his ridiculous Gretzky comments in the interview with them. To compare him to Gretzky is to act like he never had a taste of success at all as a coach. He came to us after bringing the women’s team to a spot where they were regularly reaching the final four. He has had a long successful coaching career before coming to us. By ignoring that he is trying to put the attention on himself by saying something inflammatory. He is not letting the facts get in the way of an opportunity to get in the spotlight. He was trying to gain some fans today but I certainly hope he lost some instead. He lost at least one.
He's probably just reflecting a few LAX alumni he knows.

I had a feeling that was the case when the Axe article said something like 1 year coaching job at BC or something to that nature. His antics make him a non starter for pretty much any D1 power spot.
It makes him a non starter for any coaching job ever, anywhere, at any level.

You know I was thinking of you recently since you had an excellent breakdown of the defenses shortcomings after the UVA game. Let's take a look at what you had to say:

"here are the first 6 goals:
1) incredibly unnecessary aj slide to shellenberger as he is dummy dodging and there is no 2 on the entire half of the field to cover.
-2) ditto to garno as he's bottled up going to his left except off dickson on the crease
3) garno speed dodges a short from x. u can maybe have a slide ready, but this is one where u live with garno making a play he almost never does from behind.
4) mcconvey bobbles a pass and somehow splits 2 guys in a phone booth. rosa u can excuse a bit as he was reaching probably for the gb at 1st. the pole not only whiffing the slide but allowing mcconvey to get top side to his strong hand is just crazy bad.
5) mid alley dodge shouldnt draw anything but eyes, but dickson loses himself in the backside wash and the 2 crease d guys don't feel like picking up w enough urgency.
6) no words for simply leaving dickson backside, not supporting anything.
we could go on."

This is the type of crap we are hoping to leave in the past. Teams that move the ball well would just pick us apart due to our eagerness to slide. This was the beginning of the game so you cant excuse faceoff related fatigue or what have you. Could all the players involved just be totally horrible at basic aspects of team defense? Or are they trying to do the prescribed motion in a complicated system that is both flawed and hard to comprehend? I lean towards the latter.

No amount of positives to him being on staff can make up for how the actual defense looked against any team with a pulse on offense. Take away the cupcakes and that defensive efficiency number is not pretty. Replace Will Mark with a non AA goalie and it is downright embarrassing.
thanks. look, i'm not going to debate away your thoughts on what it was and who was responsible. don't want to. a couple things, tho:
- adjusted efficiency is what climbed it up to 20 accounting for schedule. they were #37 in non-adjusted. there's an awful lot of bunching in the middle as always, of course. and diff unadjusted then is only like 1 1/2% up to a top 20 defense. so a 1/2 goal a game+. once you get to an elite level, it's more sizable (top 10 is > 1.5 gpg). and that doesn't factor in the eye test, as u say. so they weren't elite, but my point was improving and shorthanded.

- next... mid to late 2010s saw yuuuuge jump in almost EVERYONE adopting just the heavy slide/hedge and recover. these guys are now being paid more... with that, they are now going quant and theory. they've in many cases tried to drill higher level tinkering. it's definitely easier on paper than in real life, but coaches think they can do it. petro's not alone. cuse was doing it before he arrived.

some teams do it and are successful. maryland's a bit of a unicorn in that they don't and are consistently good.

richmond's DC is paul richards and he's a finalist for the mount st marys HC job

deluca is really the architect of the delaware defense. wilkes technically works with the defense too but i dont know how much of it is "his"

galloway, crane, stevens, bucci are all names that are floating around. quint isnt pulling these out of thin air. wray is a new one i haven't heard but the connection makes sense on paper. but i'd be v surprised if he made that move. hes got a good, low-pressure gig in philly
Richards is a CNY guy, so that would be a good one from an X & Os standpoint

Ty's shot at CJ isn't giving what he thinks it's giving. I'm embarrassed for him actually

Not much of a Chris fan right now, but he deserves no flack for breaking the story. A couple other comments and what have you were highly questionable, but actually breaking it is part of the job.

You may have a good point there.. wasnt Ty the one who let the Gait/Desco thing out of the bag
yes IL broke the gait news before cuse players were even told desko was "retiring"...he has no leg to stand on here

reporters should report things they know when they know it. if the team wasn't informed then that's on the staff. if you're holding news to appease coaches then you should find a new line of work

I think the measure of an administrator or head coach resides in the caliber of the people he hires. As an administrator, I decided early on to search for people who were smarter, more competent, more experienced, more well known, and immediately able to take over for me. People who impressed board members... You get the idea. I reasoned that the very best candidates would do the best job for the organization which would make the whole operation more productive and more profitable. And paradoxically, I would look better to the board and the public.

Where did Petro fit in those criteria? He met several of them, not all. His hire seemed to be a sign that Gait was confident enough in himself to risk hiring someone who could take over for him. Of course, Gait may have known Petro would leave in two years, so the criteria are of ambiguous value. I don't pay much attention to the conjecture about his replacement, except in the people on those long shot lists who meet some of them: head coaches with experience and success, assistants with several years of relative success, assistants who can adjust during games, and assistants who have recruited well in that they regularly find and develop kids who do not show up on top 100 list. I hope that SU takes the time to vet candidates carefully. They might study videos of more than a single year of games. Maybe all this is obvious to posters, but I think it's worth reminding ourselves of the importance of the criteria.

Petro was recruiting for UNC before he even told his Cuse players lol. TY is silly
This has been very entertaining reading. My view is that losing Petro is not a big deal at this point and is most likely a positive for the defense. I don't like the timing of it but given how bad Cuse's defense has been, most of the names on the list or ones not on the list would be an improvement. I don't think we will lose any recruits Petro helped land over the past year but I guess there are no guarantees.

Has Petro issued any statement to Cuse nation explaining his departure? So far, it looks rather clumsy. He wants to be with his kids - so be it. Our defense will be improved.
