Petro To UNC

Has Petro issued any statement to Cuse nation explaining his departure? So far, it looks rather clumsy. He wants to be with his kids - so be it. Our defense will be improved.

Coaches don’t release statements themselves when they are hired. That usually comes from the program itself. Petro basically did it in his tweet to Spallina but it’s not something you typically see.

Some schools are better than others when it comes to announcements. Not sure what UNC’s holdup but the whole situation is a bit awkward. It is the summer so who knows?

My vote is for delaware’s guy or even richmonds dc whoever runs that. As feel tho defense normally are very sound and solid and play aggressively but also get back in hole well also. I don’t know seen those defense are very well coached and always usually very solid all year with the talent they do have which sure cuse has higher graded talent.
Wilkes is not the answer IMO. BD is the puppet master at Delaware on the defensive side of the ball..

i understand that but maby not sure if it’s allowed or if just wrong or frowned upon but he would know Bds system n how it’s run since coaching the guys thru it last few years meaning just using BD system here but that may be trouble lol. But do also like richmonds system think be good choice also. But i think if petro really did tell gait on friday n then in plain clothes saturday or even sunday recruiting for new hire is a low move. I’ve met petro plenty of times and dude does yell n screams n i’ve witness it but i had thought he was better then making a move like that if that is indeed how it played out. Also kinda feel should be a rule in place if leave program for another least can’t start recruiting for the new program till 1 least tell former team or till news break of switch so people know or just regular simple time frame like a week or two weeks etc.

Had dinner last night with one of the greatest lacrosse coaches of all time. He said this was " Mostly " about the kids. Also said Cuse will be fine that we have excellent options.
Great night great guy and the food was really good.

Meaning Petro’s desire to coach his son?

Or SU players not enjoying Petro’s coaching style?

I can’t find my kcsu decoder ring! ;)

I truly don’t understand the negativity toward Regy Thorpe the Petro hire is a prime example of how an outsider doesn’t fit in Syracuse. Regy has a long history of coaching with Gary with a lot of success he has an extensive box and field background he will be coaching the Team USA indoor team which means Spallina will most likely be playing for him. I can’t think of any player on the mens or women’s side who didn’t love playing for him.

Not much has been said/made of Travis Crane as an option. I'll be honest and say I did not know much about him before he was mentioned in Chris' tweet. That said he along with Galloway were the two coaches who showed up on both Chris' list and Quint's. He's got an impressive resume, given that he's already an associate head coach and he only graduated college in 2013. A native of Maryland he used to coach at Calvert Hall.

His defense last year however, with Van Burren and Hudgins ranked a dreadful 62nd in adjusted defensive efficiency. That is not impressive. Ohio State seems to have a bunch of issues so not sure what can be dumped at his feet. Also didn't get the impression reading his bio how much involvement he has with recruiting (lots of bios will point out when someone is the recruiting coordinator). Given how involved Petro was in recruiting, I have to imagine this will have to be a big responsibility of whoever is going to be hired.

Petro was certainly a big part of recruiting, but I assume that most if not all of it was on the defensive end of things? March and to a lesser extent Gait seem like the names that come up with offensive recruits. I am not in the know and could be wrong, but feel like we will just need the guy to recruit defense, not scout/give the sales pitch to every recruit we are interested in. Petro Im sure was the guy for all these defensive transfers the last two years, which is not nothing, especially landing Will Mark and Jake Murphy last season. But we dont exactly have a lot of 5 star d guys lined up in 2023/24. Also our one major flip in the 2023 class was on the defensive end (Killrain to hopkins).

Full interview with Quint. Not much else noteworthy besides the names he would target for DC. Does seem to think that Syracuse is trending the right way, whereas UNC is not. Overall pretty positve outlook for Gait and the Orange.

Your reading comprehension is poor. Bro.
Damn man. I feel like there was a time you said worthwhile things here. You have been on a vendetta against this guy since the very beginning of his first season. Not gonna argue with you over the meaning of "he walks around looking smug."

I have been critical of the hiring choice since it was first announced. I wanted someone more ingrained in the mens game who did not need any sort of adjustment because they were already crushing it at some other school. But 90% of the stuff that gets lobbed his way on here is a big steaming pile of BS. We are trending up and we completely killed it in the portal this offseason. Shocking that all these guys wanted to play for such a terrible coach who does nothing and blames the players for everything. The offense is his wheelhouse and that improved significantly in year 2.

If we fail to make the playoffs with these boatloads of talent on the roster next season then I will be right there with you. Until then Im not going to join in all this nonsense over analyzing his freaking body language and mannerisms, or dissecting off the cuff answers in press conferences, or assuming he does nothing at all since he is not yelling and screaming during games, or making a mountain out of off field things that everyone has only 2% of the details on. The vast majority of criticism here is crap like that. That is what makes me salty.

That was a fun interview with Quint. I liked his idea of eliminating the FOGO position by making him stay on to play offense or defense and not allowing a substitution until a turnover. It would be interesting to see that applied to the other positions. It would be wild to see a face off with wing players being all short sticks. If you won the faceoff you have to stick with what you have on the field. Not sure if this is a reasonable rule change but it is interesting to think about alternatives. I can’t imagine a time when a 32 second shot clock would be applied to the college game. It is interesting how the impact of the 32 shot clock for wining the faceoff changed overall strategy. Maybe the college game could lower the clock ten seconds or something comparable. I did enjoy the interview, the parts about Petro but the other parts about the world game, PLL, etc.

Hope you are all having a great summer!

i have heard that there has been communication between the following people and cuse regarding the role. i have no info on what exactly those talks entailed. just that there has been contact of some kind with each of them...i dont know who reached out to who

jordan stevens
travis crane
ron caputo
kevin unterstein

i have not heard anything about wellner or galloway, but doesnt mean it hasnt happened. just havent been able to confirm

i should also note that this is not a complete picture. cuse has probably talked to other people. this isnt a comprehensive list

not surprising. and yes, it's probably a fraction.

'cuse doesn't have to rush this. they at the least should figure out who all is interested and who all they want to reach. it's an important hire for them.

Thanks, this looks like a good list.

Stevens - maybe thinking he’ll never get that Cornel job. Also have to imagine Syracuse would pay a good deal more than the Big Red. He’s also associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. Think I was a little harsh on the Cornell defense in a previous post, they ranked 24th in defensive efficiency.

Crane - already had a long post about Crane. TLDR, the credentials are impressive but OSU was in the 60s in efficiency. I have to say I watched their game against UNC last year and loved how coordinated they were on defense. Can’t speak to what happened the rest of the year.

Caputo - for some reason I thought he was a Duke grad. He is not (U of Scranton). From Long Island. Perhaps he sees writing on wall with Danowski Jr taking over and wants a new challenge. Will have one son at Duke with a year of eligibility so maybe he doesn’t want to leave quite yet. Did just take Duke to national title game. Def efficiency of 30. Can’t say I’ve really liked the way Duke plays defense if I’m being honest (it doesn’t seem to me like they slide, at all).

Unterstein - is it this easy? Just take the guy that UNC demoted who might be better than the guy who replaced him? UNC 10th in defensive efficiency. From Long Island. Would seem like a no brainer from his perspective given that it would be an immediate promotion. Not sure how involved he is in recruiting.

Anyways this changes by the minute for me but if that’s the group (I know there are more and SU might be more interested in the coach than the coach in SU), Stevens would be my first choice followed by Unterstein.
