Not sure how it’s remotely similar. We want Deng as a backup not a starter.

This is true. We probably can’t offer the biggest bag or most playing time.

If we did not get Kings, then we probably would have Deng already.

If Kingz gets 25 min, Kiyan 15, and Freeman plays some 3 in a big line up, Where does Deng get minutes?

He would be a great add but I’m not sure it makes sense for him.

Nothing about Deng. They want Sno-Top’s black raspberry ice cream. I don’t live in NY, so that’s going to be a problem. They have trouble focusing.

It’s not about starter vs backup. That’s irrelevant to my point. The Leffew recruitment kept dragging out. It looked like we were in good shape and that he was gonna commit, and then everything shifted and he wound up going to Georgia for more money. I worry that could be happening with Deng. If that happens, ok, they’ll deal with it, but I hope the staff has a plan B for another quality high level 3-point shooter at the wing.

To me, the staff should be able to sell this. There’s little difference between being the 6th man at Syracuse vs starter at UNLV or wherever. Also, anyone can play their way into a starting lineup if they prove themselves.

i get what youre saying and i beleive that is how the staff sees it

but i think it is more than a bit presumptuous of the staff to assume they know how the pecking order on the team will be next year

youve got 2 returning players...4 freshman and a bunch of transfers

besides, the staff has been wrong 2 out of 2 years so far in terms of playing time etc...this is the braintrust that ended up with justin taylor as a PF and carlos as a PG...they arent exactly nostradamusses

they thought bell was a cornerstone last year in the offseason lol...and he got benched early

what then? keep deng on the bnech bc thats what was decided in portal season? that would be madness

the staff might see deng as a bench guy but thats honestly irrelevant when the games start...you want guys that can push to be starters not guaranteed bench warmers, imo

this is yet anothr reason i hate the nil era...to get players you have to predetermine their minutes and rol einstead of merely letting the guys decide with their play

The bolded point illustrates my biggest concern over Deng. It isn’t Deng specifically, it’s that he’s a good player, but at redundant positions.

I think getting Deng pushes Freeman to center more than I care to occur. It becomes a situation of “would you rather have Souare or Deng on the court when Kyle is out?” I think Deng, Freeman and Kingz becomes a 5 or more minutes per half lineup, and that Freeman gets worn down by seasons end as a result.

I would much prefer a Deng-quality player, but at 6’10, 245, who would take Souare’s minutes and keep Freeman at PF/SF. Freeman should play very rarely at center, only when the staff identifies a matchup he can dominate.

I don’t want Freeman playing center out of necessity. Deng doesn’t help that problem.

I agree. We need another shooter with length and athleticism on the wing. I hope Red and the staff can close this deal. If not, maybe they can find a similar or even better player from overseas. They should leave no stone unturned to upgrade the talent across the board.
