Plans for new SU stadium on hold

Good Article from just after the Dome in Minnesota collapsed. Inflatable domes, there are only 3 left including the Carrier Dome. Even the architect that invented them saw that they would eventually be Obsolete and started to design fixed fabric enclosed domes like the Florida Suncoast Dome. It is only a matter of time before someone says that it is unsafe and have to change it IMO.

So in your fantasy world the Dome is ONLY used for SU football and hoops? Hmm, news to every high school event and every other event that uses the building. Bottom line is it's a 35 year old stadium next year and won't make it to 60 years old like you somehow think it will. That is your logic, wait till the thing is 60 years old then start thinking about replacing it. The Dome is good enough today but won't be in 10 years or so let alone 25 years from now when its a 60 year old building. Stadiums don't get built overnight. Takes lots of money and planning. Can't get caught where other schools pass us by with vastly better stadiums and SU is looking minor league and looking around the landscape saying , hey wait...the Dome is an issue we gotta do something! The Dome is an issue now, not a huge issue but an issue and it will be a very big issue a decade from now. So, start the planning and process of replacing the building or doing a major face-lift to have it be a viable stadium NOW...not 5 years from now, not 10 years from now, and SURE AS HELL not 25 years from now like you want to. Start the process NOW and don't put it off.
I tried, but never saw where I said 'lets wait till its falling down to look for a replacement or to remodel'. Just don't see a need to be way ahead of this.

I thought I was clear on remodeling and a new roof, anyway...

High schools??, HIGH SCHOOLS???? They should be thanking their lucky stars they are in the Dome. Go play in buffalo, let em freeze their arses off. them.

Same with every other Syracuse school program not named football or men's basketball...go play at Coyne or Manley.

Otherwise they need to shut up and be proud they have use of the great Carrier Dome.

Nice small time thinking there. Thank god you aren't in a position of power

Good find! And exactly why SU needs to be way ahead of the curve. And not have the peanut brain/small time thinking some around here have of lets wait another 25 years and worry about it then.

Why are people so enamored with a retractable roof? I mean honestly...how many outdoor games will be held? Maybe you can open it up for summer time events but it just doesn't justify the cost to me.
If you are going to spend hundreds of millions or close to a billion dollars on a stadium you plan on getting 30 years out of at least...you build it with all the bells and whistles to make sure it is viable for all of those 30 years. So yes a retractable roof makes sense and should be done.

No problem for a new stadium to house Syracuse University sports but the community should have use of the venue as well as potential tenants (ie. soccer).

It depends on the renovation. OUR dome has an air supported roof. By almost all accounts, that is an outdated architecture. If replaced with a hard structure, it would run in the hundreds of millions of dollars along with more for other enhancements.
Michigan and ND don't have the roof concerns.

If SU can raise hundreds of millions for a new roof and supporting structure along with other nice amenities, I agree, go for it. If not, then a government built / owned stadium / arena is probably the best bet.

Its the foundations, the current roof adds very little weight to the dome perimeter foundations since inflation carries most of the weight and hard structure roof would easily weigh much much more. In order to achieve those spans I would expect we may need new foundations outside of the existing building footprint. I haven't seen the plans but foundation costs are a big savings with this type of inflated roof I wouldn't expect sufficient overdesign for the change.

Teams with them open them so rarely, might as well save the money

I agree that adding support structures are the big cost for a retro-fit fixed roof on an air-supported dome but not sure what you are referring to above..."wouldn't expect suffcicient overdesign for the change"...???

I don't understand how Florida weather can compare to Syracuse.

Is the current roof ok? If not, how much to replace it? If it has to be replaced what are the costs of the choices along with their useful lives.

They weren't comparing the weather, they were comparing the structures and the architecture. I don't think that the next time that they replace this roof that it is an inflatable style roof like it is now.

Considering the new materials that are available now and the type of structure being built for the Vikings. I have to believe that there is another, better option out there. The issue is also going to be upgrades in other areas, not just the roof if they are going to refurbish it.

The entire structure needs to be upgraded and brought into the 21st century, not just the roof, retractable or fixed.. Others have said that the requirements for upgrading are numerous and expensive. Wider concourses, wider aisles, handicapped seating and access, etc.

The Pontiac Silverdome roof is no more so we're the only air-supported roof left.

I love looking at a task force that has no connection to any budget authority to do what it's investigating. What are they going to report out at the end? That the city should take someone else's money?

Exactly. When the county and Syracuse decided not to have representation - it lost even more worth.

So Miner can justify not taking the state money in the next election cycle
