Postgame Thoughts... Virginia (ACC T)

I just looked at the play again for maybe the 10th time. Richmond screwed up. Hauser passes the ball to Clark and Kadary takes an ill-fated 2 steps out and lets Clark drive by him, forcing Dolezaj to come out from guarding Huff and forcing Quincy to come inside to guard Huff, leaving Beekman wide open. Game over.

Quincy was on Beekman until he saw Marek leaving Huff to pick up a driving Clark.
That’s the issue with the zone, tough to put it on Richmond too, he is in front of the driver then the pass goes to the top of the key for an open 3 there.

Unfortunately they drew up a perfect play and got to the spot on the floor that makes the defense collapse on the ball handler. If anyone is to blame it is probably Richmond but even then it’s tough to pin on him.

These are the situations where I wish we would plan man.

Marek could have faked and then dropped down allowing Quincy to cover the wing quicker. I would force Clarke to shoot it. He was not ever thinking about shooting the ball. Quincy played it right.

Clark took 9 shots yesterday and scored 10 points, including 6 from three. If Marek hadn't come out, he absolutely would have taken that shot, knowing he's got Huff back there battling for the board if he didn't make it. Like 2-3 said, it was a great play against the zone.

Exactly. Good post.

Hauser might have been open had Clark done a 180 and looked for him. Buddy was in the area however and probably would have been right on Hauser had Clark been stopped by Richmond. Had Hauser gotten the ball back the shot would have been contested. I doubt the play drawn up was to give a player who was 0-5 shooting and had not scored a point in the game the final deciding shot.

Anyway, tough loss. A victory would have guaranteed us a spot in the tournament. Now we have to wait until Sunday evening on the edge of our seats.

The play wasn’t drawn up for him, but the play they ran gave them the most options for an open guy or a shot off the dribble. Buddy, at no fault of his own and it’s the zone, I’m not sure he makes it back to Hauser, for that shot, Kadary closed that lane, next option is drive and shoot, Marek stopped that, other option was drop it down to Huff and that was locked up. We stopped every single person we wanted to stop on that play, unfortunately our defense as a whole and it’s fundamentals allowed that player to be wide open.

The zone always collapses at the free throw line and we’ve seen this for years, unfortunately in this circumstance it was with no time left, we left the correct guy open and he hit a shot. It’s hard to place blame on anyone when you did what you set out to do. 7 out of 10 times we don’t even talk about this and the game goes to overtime with that shot being an afterthought. Tough loss, I hate moral victories when it comes to basketball but this was one of them, it was the most enjoyable game for me this season ignoring the last second of the forty minutes.
