Postgame Thoughts... Virginia (ACC T)

I could have had a bunch of assists with the way Buddy was shooting ..

1-8 is hard to overcome .. but I guess that’s where we’ve come to .. he can go 1-8 and be thought of as having played ok cause of the extreme low bar we have now set for him
He's 5'11" and tried to sneak a layup by a 7'1" center. That was mind boggling. He has some really great plays, but then follows it up with something incredibly stupid.

well his shooting was terrible. You said he brought nothing.

Seems like Girard is getting quite a pass for his terrible performance .. just goes to show you how low expectations have fallen ... it’s now basically not worthy of comment when he brings nothing

I realize we had no other option due to KRs injury .. but that doesn’t mean he can’t step up a tiny bit
His shot wasn’t falling today that’s for sure! But aren’t you suppose to contribute in other areas if that’s the case? Like rebounds (6), or assists (4), or steals (3)? And he was the only player who was a “plus”. But I get it, he’s a terrible defender and when he came out of the game with 10 minutes left it was a 1 point game. He was replaced by our future lottery pick all-world defender. You might want to watch the last play and see how that worked out.

Should have come out in man last sequence. No way they had a man offense planned. No screens, no iso, they would have panicked with no time to regroup or call a timeout. Someone in everyone’s face.

Absolutely. He was second in rebounds and tops in assists and steals. Kadary got blown by easily without a pick on the final play and his late rotations gave up two threes on his side. People are justified on knocking Joe at times but, willing to give Kadary an excuse. If he was that hurt he shouldnt be in the game. I wish people would stop playing the two against each other and be thankful we have two real good players who bring different things to the table.

In a million years this would never happen..even when we used to play a lot of man .. we played zone on in bounds

Going to assume SU is in, and this close loss to UVA is actually the best scenario-
SU has a lot of banged-up guys-
Therefore the respect earned with this close loss propels SU into March Madness-
And by losing SU gets extra time to rest and prep for what REALLY matters.

Maybe it's just me, but losing in never the best case scenario.

Everyone plays zone baseline inbounds. Not sideline. It wouldn’t happen only because we don’t do it. Huge difference between inbound plays under the basket and sideline. Watching man and ball is a completely different challengs under the basket. My point is not that it would happen, but it would have been effective.

hall of fame coach Jim Boeheim thought he was better option. Sorry.

He was stuck, he lets him go by there is another defender, which worked because the driver passed the ball, he had to defend the pass to the man on top of the key. I wouldn’t call it blown by, we play a zone, not man.

Hall of fame coach Jim Boeheim obviously felt that even with his injury he was playing better than Joe to justify playing him at the end.

Lol. Man you’ve been HOLDING that one.

Joe Girard did something important that others on the team could learn from.

His shots weren’t falling, but he stayed engaged and limited his mistakes. He effected the game on the boards, facilitating and held up fairly well defending for most of today. Limited turnovers.

He’s growing as a player outside of scoring, which is good considering his solid freshman contributions and now 2nd year where he’s struggled a bit shooting. He’s becoming a well rounded player and hopefully will continue to grow.

A team's weakness tends to show up in the most critical moments.

Top of the zone D... awful.
We had 5 players watching the guy with the ball losing track of everyone else.

How do you come out of this game with Joe vs Kadary thoughts, in either direction?

Joe may not have shot well but today was probably his best defensive game all season, was our second leading rebounder, and had 4 assists to one turnover.

Kadary isn’t 100% and he still gave us 17 solid minutes. Seems to me like JB was trying to save his minutes for when we really needed them. I’m happy with how both of them played and I’m happy with their minute allocations for both of the games this week. Neither of them had much to do with us losing today.

Pointing to Joe going 1-8 and saying he played poorly is lazy and telling

He made a three then proceeded to take a shot without passing the next two possessions, including a three from the top of key with 20 seconds plus on the shot clock and a defender in front of him and one to the side, next play he came and shot a mid ranger that went off the side of the rim. When you have someone like Buddy who was that hot, if he doesn’t touch the ball once 3 times down the court you’re doing something wrong. Joe wasn’t good and while last game he played like a real player, he absolutely reverted back to chucker Joe this game.

Like oh say Griff...

Griff was really bad today and totally disengaged but offensively Murphy is a tough matchup for him. Murphy has 4 inches on him and is just as quick. No excuse though

Wide open. I see why QG went down. Not sure why Buddy was at the elbow.
Buddy was at the elbow because he needed to shade onto Hauser, who’s a deadly 3-point shooter.

He left him too. He was too worried about Clarke for some reason IMO.

Great post. I had to go out for a hour wolk to cool down. Bit difficult to do when it is 75 degrees outside. Correct in that we could pick this one to death but the team less Griffin left it all on the floor. If we do get a chance to play on, I hope Kadary's knee can come around ina week.
I also walked for 3 miles, and nearly got blown off my feet by this little zephyr we’ve got going in Syracuse today. I came back in a slightly more philosophical mood.

Our guys played with heart and guts. We know that Kadary and Q and Marek are hurt. When Q went down that one time, the look on his face said it all.

I am remembering all the times we have won games on buzzer beaters. We have done this a LOT. Today we were on the receiving end. Ouch! But if it had gone to OT and we lost, I think it would have been more demoralizing, at least for me. Can’t speak for the team.

Once again, we will be sweating it Selection Sunday. And if the Fates are kind to us, it only means they are screwing someone else.
