Honestly kind of surprised. Yes the team cratered in the back half of the season (thanks injuries), and yes the team lost some talent, but this team still has a lot of pieces. Those pieces should allow them to have at least the same great start that they had last year. That would have them getting votes which is what I half expected in the preseason poll, to be in the 'others receiving votes' category.

Preseason polls are the way that the big boys can lose a couple games and still get into the playoff.
But the AP/Coaches poll and the CFP poll aren't related at all. It's completely different groups of people.

And no team with two losses has ever made the playoff.

Kansas cratered just as badly and they eeked out a vote, so dammit, where is our homer vote?!

My general point is that the big boys get ranked high because of who they are. When they lose a game, they're often still ranked ahead of many teams that are undefeated, simply because of where they started in the polls. This has been the case for years, long before the playoffs. Now, when the playoffs expand, things will be more fair to teams that don't start the season highly ranked.

But it doesn't affect the playoff. The committee does not base their rankings off of any of the other rankings.

We were really bad at the end even in the win against BC.

Its annoying to have no votes because it will suck if we go 3-0 and aren't ranked after Purdue. 4-0 after Army should be enough thats a lot of losses out there.

I wouldn't have been surprised if we got some votes. I'm quite certain SU is better than several teams that got votes. But they haven't earned anything yet. Last years losing streak had little to do with injuries and a lot more to do with facing the best 5 teams on our schedule. The bowl game can be tossed as so many players were sitting out. But SU also lost several quality players with remaining eligibility. We won't be better without them no matter how well their replacements play. But we play a Rutgers worthy non-conference schedule and other ACC schools lost talent also. I think we'll surprise.

-Michigan's highest preseason ranking since they were #1 in 1989
-Bama's lowest preseason ranking since Year 2 of Saban in 2009
-Oklahoma's lowest preseason ranking since Year 1 of Bob Stoops in 1999
-Tulane's first preseason ranking EVER. They have finished seasons ranked 8 times so it's about time they got some respect.

Wonder how good Purdue is this year/ Didn't they lose the QB and both the receiver and TE that scorched us all game?
Shrader might throw for 400 yards and their OC Harrell is bad at his job.

Would be a very disappointing loss, even on the road, given what we expect from our team this season.

Oklahoma has no right being ranked to start year

Oregon State is interesting. From 2014 to 2020 they were bad. Bad bad.

Then they went 7-6 and 10-3 and find themselves ranked preseason.

If we were to go 10-3 this year I wonder if we would be preseason ranked next year.

Why isn’t unc at home? Id mark that down as a W if so. But yeah thats worse than a toss up on the road

Correct.

Star players gone.

New HC, new schemes on offense and defense.

It is a good time to play them.

I think we are looking at 7 or 8 wins is most likely but It has a possibility for more though. A drop to 6 wins is possible with significant injury pieces but I really think our floor is a lot higher this year than most years because of solid depth. As long as we can avoid serious injuries to Shrader, Enrique Cruz, Gadsden and probably I. Johnson we will be pretty darn good. Those would be injuries that would hurt us the most. But a bowl season seems like a very sure bet to me.
