Class of 2021 QB Kaidon Salter (TX) Portal to Colorado

He’s the top rated QB in the portal right now - he isn’t a back up option
Who has him classified as the 'top rated QB'?
In his most recent game vs the Sam Houston University Bearkats, he passed for 83 yards.
The week before, he passed for 108 yards.

He’s in the 5-7 range. Certainly behind the Tulane and New Mexico QBs.

It makes more sense to adapt the offense to fit the talent. I'm sure the preference would be to find a QB1 similar to McCord. But, short of that, Nixon's value will be how well he is able to adapt the offense.

I think NIL made me shift my thinking why not get talent that fits what Nixon found to be successful? Why pick talent that is completely opposite and then roll the dice on an offense that we don't know will work or not? Not like we can't find other QBs why settle for one that you will have to change from a very successful pass-first offense in a done to a run-first offense? Makes no sense not like we are tied to getting this guy and we have to make it work. Get talent that fits the offense that we were just so successful with,

Pocket passer that is accurate with a pass first offense YR 1 found a ton of success and set records.
Then by choice (portal we are choosing) switch to a run first offense and hope it works out. Seems like a big unnecessary gamble that can back fire very easily.

You want us to replicate a unicorn? Good luck with that.

Why not get the best overall QB we can, and then tweak the O to work with his skillset.

We can try to replicate what Dungey did for us in 2018.
That clearly worked too.

And Fran can get us higher quality talent across the board, so Nixon can then scheme to utilize all of those players in the best way possible.
Exactly, what makes a great OC great, amongst other things, is adapting to his talent. Nixon didn’t call 550 or so pass plays because he felt like it, he was playing to the strengths of a dropback QB who doesn’t run and the shaky OL which made running the ball a bit of a challenge

We have no idea what Nixon is planning to do next year. No inside info but IMO Nixon is the guy picking the QB's he wants to bring in, not Fran.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a significantly different offense in Atlanta next year and Tennessee goes, "WUT?"

Nixon did a great job taking advantage of Kyles skills this year. Quick trigger, Quick read, excellent recievers who lacked the speed to stretch the field and the best RB catching the ball in the country. I also like what our OL coach did. He kept Kyle healthy all year with very few penalties. Next year if we have a dual threat QB i expect Nixon will run a different O. He is going to fit the O around the skill set of his QB , not force the QB into his scheme. It's what makes him such a great OC

If LA goes pro we need a RB from the Portal

It is an important point in how crisp and effective the offense ran this year with new players and a new staff. Granted the leadership and maturity of McCord was special plus having Laquint as the emotional leader as well. Either way it was impressive and the sooner they can put together the pieces to start working with for next year the better to give the staff the time they need.

Limited sample size, one year, etc. but Nixon seems to be the real deal. I look at him like a chef who can cook up a feast based on what is in the larder that day. And I'm eager to see what he serves up on any given day. And with Nixon, I'm not yet willing to second-guess anything he does. He's proved it.

So granted when bringing in a player it's a two way interview but presumably it was Fran and Nixon who are showing the interest. So if we operate on the reasonable premise that our OC must have some interest here given he owns the offense, I feel reasonably comfortable in saying that Nixon has seen enough tape on this guy to bring him in. To run an offense that he might want to run. I am also comfortable trusting the staff when it comes to identifying fits for the team given last 12 months.

If we can get him and Nixon wants him I’m in as well. Nixon has had great success before with a dual threat QB at Baylor with Charlie Brewer in 2019 when they went 11-1. I remember watching them a ton the offensive was adaptable and they always quoted players not plays. History would tell us Nixon can have success with all different types of QBs and isn’t boxed into one particular philosophy or system. So if the staff thinks this is their guy I trust them. Would be cool too considering we play Salter’s former team that dismissed him week 0.

I think he'd be a great backup to Jakhari personally. What's the downside for Cuse?
Nobody has any idea how Jakhari is. The fact that Fran is hitting the portal hard for a QB tells you something, especially with Johnson coming back . I'm all for stacking your roster with 5 or 6 QB's and let things sort themselves out, but I think if Jakhari was a sure thing we wouldn't be going so hard for a portal QB. I like Saltar, but I do admit it was nice having a pure PP in Kyle. The thing is Kyle is a unicorn. Talents like that don't grow on trees. Saltar showed in 2023 that he could put up numbers if healthy, with the right talent, and OC. I would make a large wager that next years starting QB is not on the roster yet.
