Class of 2023 QB LaNorris Sellers (SC) Flipped to South Carolina

Recruit over the position and move on.

Sure, keep communication lines open but if he has a tough or mediocre freshman year then tough luck and enjoy transferring to Liberty if they’ll have you.

We didn’t “need” Sellers.

On to the next
Communications line cease when he signed.
Next man up!

Can you ever imagine a New York State kid ever feeling pressure to stay home to Syracuse? We lose out in basketball all the time. Different world in the south.
Challenge is that so much as far as prospects is concentrated in the NYC area and due to being such a mass media market the major prospects there tend to have a national outlook on things. They just want to go where the hype is.

I didn’t say don’t recruit HS. We have limited resources, including time and people compared to other schools. You need to be able to balance that with the greatest payoffs. The portal should continue to be a big focus
I doubt that the time and resources to recruit a HS player is much greater than recruiting a portal player. There is only so much contact allowed with HS players, usually not much until the summer before their Senior year.

‘Cuse needs to corner the portal market. Easier said then done though.

What else do they need to target? WR & DL?

True. But the way to reverse that trend is to continue to win games and get to bowls. Give the coaching staff an even better message to use on the recruiting trail -- for both HS players AND portal transfers. That's the only way to establish Syracuse as an attractive destination.

Portal transfers want to play, but they also want to win. We got to a bowl this year, and we need to do so again next year. When we do, I think we'll see our profile enhanced in the eyes of prospects.

He told them Wednesday. It was not easy for him. I personally don’t blame the kid for staying in state. They have good momentum right now. S Carolina beat Clemson for the first time in years. I wish him the best and if things don’t work out there I’m sure Beck will keep him in deep consideration.

Literally told them on signing day. Ugh.

My old man would of kicked my arse had I turned down a million dollars.
Not saying he got anything near that, but follow the money is what I’ve always heard. Being loyal is a nice trait, but there ain’t no loyalty in any of this college sports world.
It depends. My wife's cousin was drafted and signed a minor league baseball deal straight out of high school at his parent's urging. He wanted to go to college but did what his parents wanted. Fast forward, pro baseball didn't work out, he may have gotten hurt, and he regretted not going to college. I know this isn't the same situation, but the quick money isn't always the best money.

Yeah totally different scenario to say the least, my point is the kid doesn’t need to show any loyalty to anyone in this corrupt world we call college sports.
Do what’s best for you and always look out for number one.

Beck viewed him as a generational talent. I understand the point you are trying to make, but you are significantly underrating this kid if you just want to look at stars and conclude that losing out on him is no big deal.

But you are right, we can and will find portal transfers of quality -- as evidenced by Shrader and CDRW. Sky isn't falling at QB.
Can you point to some comments by Coach Beck implying/stating that Sellers is a "generational" talent.

I was 14 and trying out for a Jr B hockey team in a Toronto suburb. There was another 14 year old that was on the team the prior year that was working out with the team. This was a 14 year old amongst 17-19 year olds. He was easily the best player on the ice. His name was Wayne Gretzky. Even then, he was not identified as a "generational" talent.

This term must have been created afterwards - or not.

For me, "generational" talent is a label that should be applied AFTER the accomplishments take place - not before.

If Sellers is the real deal, like a NcNabb or a Vick, he will not be in the portal.

Have you not followed the portal this year? There’s been tons of starters from the SEC and B10 who entered the portal and a million starting QB’s

I don’t think we do bad with local kids in bball. Never going to get them all. But we’ve gotten Coleman, Rautins, Triche, Triche, Roe, Wright, and Wright. And who could forget Wadach, Sims, Schayes, Sease, Headd, Breland and Hanson? And of course a kid named Boeheim.

So because of your age you are free from criticism? We’re not talking about grammar school kids here.

Not sure if I agree with that naive take.

(Saying this in a vacuum, not necessarily specific to Sellers)
Did she come here from a D-1AA school?

Don’t want to argue about it but the time a kid entered the portal and ultimately signs is very limited. For a majority of the players teams are grabbing to fill holes. The amount of time spent following a HS kid when we offer kids that are ‘24-‘25 players has got to be more time consuming even if the contact window is less per year. It’s still greater per year than the small window kids hit the portal and find a new school. IMO.

Not sure if I agree with that naive take. How you do things sometimes matters even more than what you do.

I dont condone insulting or lashing out at highschoolers.

But this is what the NCAA and players are amplifying now with NIL. Lets not be naive. Staying home was a factor but there’s dollar signs too.

Did I want Sellers to come to Syracuse? YES
After his press conference...
Do I want Syracuse to recruit Sellers after he hits the portal next year? NO

He moved on we should move on. Good luck to him getting buried on the depth chart. For an offensive coaching staff to stick with you even through the darkest times and then to show them no respect in your interview says a lot to me about the type of kid he is and the type of people he has behind him. Don't want that and I wish you get recruited over every year and South Carolina never wins a game while you are there. Good luck at Liberty.
