Stop minimizing. He’s good. He has more experience than anyone we have. And on the biggest stage. A lot to be said about making the easy read on that stage.
I'm not upset we're bringing him in. I just feel like we're giving Collins a raw deal. I want a fair QB competition and want us to win as many games as we can.

I do expect if Collins sticks around and is starting in the Benz in August, some on this board are going to have an extremely short leash.

I'm still struggling to understand why people think Angeli is a sure thing 2-3 game improvement on Collins.

I'm also hoping we're not bringing him in strictly because Nunz thinks he'll be the better QB because his brother coached him at Bergen Catholic.

As long as all the QBs understand this is an open competition and the best man for the job wins, then so be it.
I agree with you, I don't think anyone could say with great confidence one is significantly better than the other, at this point. But, I love the competition. I hope they both embrace it and understand that one will win the QB1, but they will drive eachother to be better. And they will both benefit from that.

Well, I asked if Fran said anything beyond " so it seems like he’s going to be our quarterback" and I haven't gotten anything countering it - even from one here who is passionately against what Fran did. So, I guess that's it. Wow. Talk about a nothing burger. Whatever, I'm moving my focus on Angeli wearing orange (hopefully).
Yes .. “it seems “ is not a later guarantee .. it’s just at the moment that’s what it looks like

So what?

Bring the best players you can and, and let them compete.. Period.

The way I look at it the players can't have it both ways. If players are gonna portal left and right to chase coin without a shred of loyalty then coaches absolutely have free rein to continuously upgrade the roster. Competition is a good thing. If you can't handle it then you don't have the right inner fortitude in the first place to be QB1.
Since the portal stuff started two guys left because there was a market at ”bigger” programs for them.

Still don’t know the story with Reed.

Everyone else that left was looking for playing time or a change of scenery.

Same goes for the sport as a whole, the vast majority of kids that are transferring are looking for a second chance to get on the field, they aren’t chasing money.

Every qb that has transferred here didn’t come because we won the auction. Every single one came because they saw a better path to the field than the place they were at.

Now why do you think that? I'd expect the offense will be almost exactly the same regardless of which QB wins the job.
Almost is the operative word there. Collins likely to get more of a run package, Angeli less likely. The OC will tailor the offense to the QB's inherent skills. They'd be foolish not too. To what degree they do that, who knows.

Yeah don’t think he was that high anywhere else … ESPN is very suspect
This is a good article comparing Angeli and the other guy he competed with (and beat out) for the backup job at QB.

It says Angeli was considered the 365th best players in his class. That was 247. No it sure if they are also considered suspect by you. ;)

As the article points out, Steve had a shortened senior season because of COVID.

Looks like Rickie was rated as the 248th player in his class by 247.

I don’t know who is going to end up the starting QB and I don’t have an opinion yet. But I understand why Syracuse is interested in Steve. As noted, there are a lot of things to like about him.. Rickie has a lot going for him as well. A terrific dual threat type QB with a strong arm is a great place to start.

For those not paying attention, the staff appears to value dual threat QBs over pocket passers. We seem to target the dual threat guys a lot more than. traditional pocket passers. One of the nice things about this offense is that it is flexible enough to accolade both types of QBs.

Anyway, I hope Steve comes here. It would be great to see them battle head to head for the starting job at QB this fall.

I hope it happens.

3 Reasons to Believe Angeli is an upgrade :

- Angeli is older so more experience in a college program
- Angeli also has more real game experience including seeing action in the Playoffs
- Collins has some unfortunate negative buzz thanks to Pena sharing his opinion

Timing of naming starters, players getting feelings hurt, etc = mundane optics in this landscape of college athletics.

Bring in the best players that give the team the best chance to get W's.

All in on Angeli.
This is pro sports now. Who cares if you get your feelings hurt. You’re getting paid. Welcome to the new college athletics.

That rank is a whole lot more reasonable … people here have a real short memory though … we keep saying that Angeli being a backup at ND is akin to Collins but he has more experience. Quite frankly I’d be just as worried about Angeli .. watching Riley Leonard throw nearly gave me seizures … Collins sat behind an actual Heisman winner and a Heisman candidate in Nusmeier who was light years better as a passer than Leonard but yeah by all means anoint Angeli … Collins played behind better talent and was a higher ranked recruit coming out of high school. Let them settle it on the field.

The college football world has completely changed.

What you think is the right thing to do simply isn’t reality. Especially when every coach Is judged by wins and losses.

Kids can come and go, and with that - every single program in the country would be foolish to stay with status quo if they have even a shadow of doubt that the option they currently have isn’t as good as the one that is interested.

Collins could win the job. If Angeli comes, he could too. But if the opportunity presents itself for a program to get better and get a better option, no matter the timing now, they must do it.

If the staff was sold on Collins we wouldn’t be bringing Angeli in. If Angeli comes here, it isn’t to sit. Collins is the best of what we have but if there are better options it is what it is - the roster isn’t set yet.

So you should be excited by this. Staff clearly isn’t content with the QB situation and are willing to act to fix it. This isn’t the time to be nice. It’s the time to make sure we have our $ h i t as together as possible come Sept.

Asking honestly. You don’t think Fran will make this a fair competition? I don’t know Fran but from what I see he is very transparent and would open up to a legit battle for qb1. He wants the best and if that means challenging both Collins and Angeli so be it. McNabb had to battle KJ and turned out ok. I love a competition.

You all do realize we had another QB visit last week and Fran openly said he was going to bring in another QB right?

No one has this reaction about incumbent players when we bring in visitors at other positions. Why should QB be any different? You have starters at every position and it’s the players job to stay the starter and it’s the coach’s job to bring in the best possible football players.

If collins is getting the money he signed on for then he's getting a fair deal. Promising spots to guys is how you build a losing team

I wonder if Angeli will venture into shirt world while he heads to Varsity for a slice...he will love the special deals!

I did not see any semblence of McCord magic. I did not see escapability. I did not see any special awareness of the rush. I did not see any great downfield passes. I did not see any ability to hit a receiver in a tight window. I did not see any running ability.

All or most of the above may be there, I am just saying I did not see it in that video.

If these six or seven plays are what people hear are so amped up about...I think I am missing something.

Dont get me wrong, I am glad he is visiting. I hope we get him, but I saw nothing compelling to make Fran go back on his word to Rickie. Again, if Rickie falters, everything becomes up in the air.

As I have said all along - I hope he comes - I do believe that if he comes that sooner or later he will get an opportunity for one reason or another. Leave it at that.
Ok but you haven't seen literally any of that from Rickie ever, let alone 1 Rickie pass
