Class of 2023 QB Taron Dickens (NC) Portal from Western Carolina/Visiting 1/8/26/Offered

What the Dickens is going on with this guy? Is he going to commit? We need some QBs bad

He seems to loft the ball quite a bit and throw lollipops which works when you have wide open WRs but won’t work when you’re playing ACC defenses. I think I’d rather have Atkinson if we are adding another

Trajectory might be result of stature to get the ball over the line and defenders. It's unique but effective and he drops absolute dimes and throws an extremely catchable ball. Would do well throwing to the Monstars we've got at WR and us an extremely viable option if Steve isn't fully recovered. He'd have a chance to start regardless and could be guaranteed starter fair amount of other places.

These defenses clearly aren’t very good. I’m not convinced at all that it would work p4 level

  1. FCS All-American and the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year
  2. The most accurate passer in the FCS in 2025 (74 % CP, 7.7 % off-target rate)
  3. Set an NCAA record by completing his first 46 passes against Wolford
  4. 39 TDs, 3 turnovers
  5. Averaged 9.6 yards per attempt - 4th best in the FCS.
  6. 624 passing yds, 6 TDs against Samford; 560 passing, 7 TDs against Mercer
That's a lot of production from someone throwing "lollipops." Atkinson played in the same league and did not have this type of production.

But, I would be thrilled if we could add either Dickens or Atkinson to Odom.

If the defenses suck which I believe they do, then whether it’s a ball with zip or a lollipop won’t matter. What I’m saying is I don’t think his throw will translate when facing tougher defenses. I haven’t watched much film on Atkinson but if he throws more of a line drive then I’d prefer that

Time will tell... and may not even be here but 39 td's vs 2 int's is impressive. Dickens sees the feild well and executes plays and would also be net positive to have with the South Florida WRs.

You know who threw ropes and had p4 velocity? Rickie Collins, and Tommy Devito. You know who had questions about their mechanics and/or velocity? Dungey, Shrader and McCord.

Sometimes you just need solid football players even if they don't have elite measurements.

if you are going to throw softballs they need to be thrown earlier.. In man coverage not such a big deal if the ball is in the air longer if you are throwing very early in the break. Tougher to do over the middle and through zones. Also hard to really know since all we have is highlights. Maybe he does it based on type of play and can throw with some zip?

So with Atkinson to Oregon St., are our chips in the middle here?
Discovered this article searching the ‘net for info on Dickens.

Imagine if we landed 2 out of the 3 listed?! I’d be fascinated to learn what kind of pitch is presented to these guys. Regardless, got to love the idea of 3 historically productive guys in the QB room not afraid of competition.
