QB

Yes, don't risk him getting worse. Let him sit a game or two if needed and finish strong. Playing him while he is hurt doesn't do him or the team any good
Exactly. Like many have been saying, Shrader without 100% running ability makes no sense for this team. That is no knock against him. His running ability is what makes him unique. Without that, it makes no sense to have him in. Let him heal and the team can adjust to CDRW for the time being.

GS is such a warrior he’d play hurt rather than be on sidelines
We saw this last year and it wasn’t pretty. Our system revolves around the QB taking hits we really should have worked CRDW into the mix more considering how badly the wheels fell off last year when Garrett got banged up. We are probably undefeated if we commit to both guys getting series earlier in the year.

Then that would be crap, to lose your starting job because I’d injury. 2 weeks ago Shrader was god, I don’t think has as good or bad as people are saying here.
Drew Bledsoe says hi

Nothing like a good ole’ QB controversy. Every week we don’t win, the maxim, “the most popular guy on the team is the back up QB” will be a discussion topic
Well, yeah, but in this case the backup QB was an ESPN top 300 guy.

There aren't many of those every year. I think there are only 300.

Shrader should not be playing if he’s running ability is compromised. End of story. He’s not a pocket passer who can win a game with his arm and accuracy.

CDRW will make some inexperience mistakes. And he might leave the pocket too early sometimes… but that’s still better than a completely neutered offense.
Let’s face it: Shrader leaves the pocket too early sometimes.

A couple thoughts:

1. Del Rio certainly can throw a decent ball and definitely some drops didnt help. His long ball to Hatcher was really nice.
2. Lets not put the Clemson loss on Garrett. Thats a bad look. The play calling second half Clemson boarded mind boggling against the fastest and most athletic defense we will see all year. Garrett also was beat up by games end and it would not surprise me if he carried that into today.
3. Garret definitely with the bad throw to start today but then marched us down for a score. Garrett did not run the entire first half but for one scramble. He tried playing hurt today and Dino made the right call at halftime.
4. Let Garret heal. Play Del Rio next week.
5. For those feeling their oats Garret has statistically been one of the best QBs in the country this year and when fully healthy is very effective. He helped get us to 6 and 0 and people are over reacting because we lost at Clemson and against the Irish? We all knew ND was going to give us a healthy dose of running today and their big ass linemen helped their Rbs get to second level. When Garrett is fully healthy he starts again. Also Garrett has run the ball extremely effectively. Not sure why suddenly Del Rio is better there.
6. DelRio certainly has some good elements and brings a similar pass/run pairing to the offense we like. Definitely has some quick twitch. WE all need to see more than a half of football to assess him.
Carlos is a much better passer than Shrader. Carlos can make all the throws. Shrader is the better runner and at this point leader. Long term Carlos has more talent.

Your failsafe play is nonsensical.

There are things CDRW can do that GS can’t. That might be the difference between winning and losing some of these games down the stretch. I still prefer GS as a runner, which is why I wouldn’t be opposed to playing both QBs.

The best QB should play. Period.
Whatever you say Coach. Surprised you're on this board with all of your wisdom.

Says a lot about you ditching Shrader that easily.

Went back and watched some what I saw from CRDW and there will be alot to like on tape...

1- The moment didn't seem to big
2- He seems to already have a good grasp of the offense making audibles at the line for a young player without a ton of game time is really impressive.
3- Seemed really calm in the pocket and was able to work through his progressions. Didn't lock onto targets like GS or Tommy did.
4- Is able to move within the pocket and still deliver the ball down the field with accuracy and zip.
5- Showed the ability to make plays with his feet for positive gains within the running game.
6- The offense seemed to pick up the pace with him back there
7- Swag or whatever the youngins are calling it these days. He has it in spades. He was running around making plays point for first downs pumping his fists. He was electric in that regard.

I do think there will be some struggles with him once the defenses get more complicated but that is only from a lack of experience and not seeing things yet. The pick he threw even if it wasn't batted up in the air it had a good chance for an INT as the LB faked a blitz and dropped back into coverage and CRDW didn't see him.

One thing I do want to highlight is #7 on our list. If he can deliever on the field and maintain his health and that swag, that could do wonders for our program. Lately we are a program that has problems recruiting and his flashy plays and on field "swag" could help attract some better talent especially at WR.

His passing ability and the way he can work his progressions in the passing game really shined a light on how bad our WR core is. We need to shuffle things up and get some younger players in the game to see what they have.

And the fail safe thing is clearly too hard for you to comprehend. You still have NO idea what I’m talking about, it’s like talking to a wall at this point. If you don’t get it, you don’t get it.

You mean Shrader?

I’m not ditching him. If you allowed for nuance, you would understand that.

You’re the one drawing up plays from your couch, but I’m the coach. OK, chief.

I know exactly what you’re talking about. It’s just a dumb idea.

The players aren’t robots. This isn’t a video game. There’s a mental aspect to football that is clearly too hard for you to comprehend.

I’m not drawing it up. It’s been done many times by many teams. I was wondering why we didn’t do it. You failed, and still are failing, at even comprehending what I’m talking about.

I’ve literally never gotten mad at anyone on this board, ever. Congrats on being first. Your snark and arrogance is next level. I’m glad I don’t know you. Feel free to never respond to me again.

Count me on Wilson’s train.

Say what you will. I do not care if im dragged for this. I knew it was going to be “that game” after play 1’s pick 6. That can never ever happen. Ever.

Should be an open battle for QB starting tomorrow. I will NOT forget that we have not been to a bowl in years. Nothing has been earned.
Dungey did it once too.

Yeah. Some are taking it like it’s crapping on Shrader but it’s more…..what’s not to like about CRDW based on all we’ve seen so far?

He’s throwing lasers that are pretty much all on the money. He’s quick and mobile with decent size, like you said a great pull on the read option, changing the play on the TD.

The only real negative play was a batted ball that unluckily popped 30 yards up into the air.

I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t be Sky high on his prospects? What’s not to like?
CDRW is a tough runner too. Not as elusive as Shrader but the kid ran hard and aggressive.

My guess is he won’t try to bowl people over either. Guys like Dungey and Shrader are good at that, but sometimes they go for contact when it’s not necessary.
