To me its fairly simple
Q played well here, was third team all-ACC as a soph, and yet was not deemed an NBA prospect.
It's not a major risk to go elsewhere and try to raise your status when you do not have to give up a year. It might well be a wash and he will not be able to take the next step as a prospect. But maybe it does work out. What does he have to lose. Not much other than the respect of a smallish portion of Syracuse fans apparently.
It was just not a match between JB's system and QG anymore in the eyes of QB. Given that players and coaches try to match up needs / systems / roles every recruiting period and make choices based on that, why should we be shocked he left in this "Free transfer" year to what he felt was a better fit.
QG doesn't owe anything to Syracuse or its fanbase. He worked hard in his two years here, was a good representative of Syracuse, and left respectfully and diplomatically.
