Raoul Duke.. so great to see you here today....

2002 was Melos NYC debut and we lost. That's the night Dorcus' turtleneck was too tight. Fall 2003, Joyce got me into Jakes box with parking pass at BC. 2004 was the OU girl if you were there long enough.

Two things. First of all, Joyce I could have quite the discussion with you about where I think the news has gone over the years. Maybe it is because we are both Newhouse grads from before the Fox, MSNBC, CNN days. The 5 "w"s and no more was instilled in our brains.
Secondly, I read this board, and pick and chose what comments to read. If it gets too ridiculous, I skip the thread. That is a choice we have. So I don't get the taking a vacation aspect. There still are lots of informed and serious posters on here. I still find I learn a lot from reading the threads. And when we game watch I feel like I have about 50 of my good friends sitting with me in my living room because we have a good time, for the most part, in the chat room. LOL, my best friends are incongnito (until I finally get to meet them) people in a chat room!

The Memphis basketball game was in November of 2002 at MSG. The Diamond Ferri football game at BC was 2004. That game saved P's job for a few weeks ... until we lost to Georgia Tech in Champs Bowl... and it was all over.

yeah, 02 was the memphis game. me and raoul were lucky enough to be guests of CTO at the afternoon cancer brunch with JB. and as luck would have it, we both won 2 tickets to a sky box for the game....and we already had tickets together. i forget who the other lucky 2 we brought to the box were, maybe mad and somebody else at the table??

later, we just handed our tickets to some guy and his girl at the blarney who asked if we were selling for the game.
we said 'no. here'.....and walked off.

that mightve been the night we went to flashdancers, i remember you getting yelled at, or at least the story, cause every tip was...this could be going to SU...

i think max came with us.

it seems that i hit a club after more than a few Cuse games, with some out of towners...

Dick in Michigan... great poster... has taken a sabbatical from the board... because he feels it has turned into Romper Room. He used to love the board ... and contribute great posts... when he thought it was a mature discussion of SU sports. Now he feels it is frequently juvenile and stupid. He is not the only one who has left for this reason.

Count me among those veterans (since the AOL days) that have, for the most part, for better or worse, run for the hills as the kiddies have moved in. Not to speak for my longtime friend Longtimefan, but I believe he feels the same, which is too bad, because no one on this board, and I mean no one--and I say this respectfully to any and all wise old-timers posting or lurking here--commands the depth, breadth, knowledge, history and recall of the basketball program to match his. It's not an admonition, it's all good, just an expression of the changing environment that nudges some of us oldsters closer to the online forum nursing home. As for Raoul Duke and Dick (a fellow charter citizen of the original manley zoo), I always enjoyed their contributions.

I sorta agree with this.

Even though I was witness to it, I'm not sure what is this mythically great board of the past.

I remember being younger and more engaged. I didn't want to miss a post. I got into the back and forth between the personalities, and skip to obvious joustings in that wonderful artifact, thread view. Then I grew older. And that back and forth between posters sorta went away.

That said, I cannot think of too many examples of how the board was "better" back then. It was different, for sure. There was much more interplay between posters. You could always look forward to a good Igor v Tristan V Boca throwdown. The chats were more fun, because we could get wilder.

The worst of the board was during the Forth ages. Getting pounced on for saying anything negative about his 4 rebound games, or whatever, and having his # of screens, used as a counter argument flat out sucked. hypersensitivity about certain types of arguments, and flogging those on the wrong side of it became acceptable. Just being a syracuse fan wasn't good enough. IMO, this started a downward trend.

The place was pretty raw and fun before that. Kinda like stand up comedy. We didnt "ignore" people, etc. Anyone remember the swear-athon we had the night before we migrated from one of the boards?

I don't know. The good posts then, are about as good as the good posts now. Are there less? Maybe.

Today, and for the past few years, there seems to be a lot more of the Jr Admin patronizing etiquette posters.

Before i got turned off, i used to read every single post. I got bored with that, had a kid, etc. I took my own time out for About 9 months. Partially to prove I could. But partially bc i got sick of certain posters jumping down my throat. i understand i bring some of it upon myself. i am opinionated and stubborn.

People do leave simply because it does get old. We shouldn't pine for them. Sometimes it is just time to go. Dick was great though.

We cannot all be pals with JB and Hop. We cannot all be insiders. If that is what people want, then a pay board is the way to go. However , if a more open communication is what people want, there has to be tolerance of the new blood.

I think that the reason that the old board, going all the way back to AOL, was considered "classic" or better was because there were fewer of us, and so we really got to connect personality with posts. You really knew who the other poster was back then. Now, there are far more posters, so it's hard to get a sense of a poster's personality.

I was at that afternoon cancer Brunch prior to the 02 Memphis game, also, thanks to Joyce. That was a lot of fun for a good cause. I remember Millhouse showing JB pictures of his newborn. Wasn't that kid a lucky omen during 02-03 along with the Mangy Sweater?

No, 2002. It was Melo's first game, man.

No they played Memphis again in 2004 in a pre season coaches vs cancer game. We won 77-62. Same night as the Pacers brawl game. 11-19-04

now i need one of those dislike buttons.

swish, you didnt get things back then and you dont get things right now.

the forth years sucked because you wanted to bash the kid and smarter people wouldnt let you?? cmon!! 4 boards in 20mins? not bad, and couple that with the production from either mcneil or watkins 20mins...and thats a good game center(s). id take that every year for the last 1o years.

we were certainly younger with less responsibities (good lord, wasnt that memphis game on a tuesday and im at strip club till 4am?! and drinking since we'll say 5?!! wowzers)

i still like it here, its fun. i dont see anything wrong with pointing out the 'old days' were better and more fun. its sort of like seeing U2 at a club or at Giants Stadium. both are awesome, but damn would it be better in a club.

the fights (discussions) were awesome in thread view, that alone makes it better. one takes a few hours off, comes back and the whole 1st page is nuts. fights within fights. tangents all over the place, and the reader totally able to jump where he wants and hit on point.

and if i wanted to call you swoshy, a board resume posting freak, and to get out of my city, but pay me a tax 1st...we wouldnt get 14 newbies all upset that i insulted poor ole swish. the board knew id be slapping you on the back and buying you a beer at the bar later.

Oh Lord

i remember being at the Garden and then the blarney for the fight, couldnt tell you it was the 2nd memphis game, but makes sense.

and yep, went 'out' after that too.

jeepers.

Oh, yeah! Good stuff. So as not to bruise your fragile ego, I will admit there are at least two sentences I agree with in your dissertation.

Yes, Forth was your Smalbany buddy. We all got that. He was the greatest pick setter ever!

I'm not a confrontational person, but I do want to make a couple comments.

I don't exactly consider myself one of the "kiddies", as I'm approaching 40, but I am also not an old-timer. However, I have only recently started actively participating here after years of lurking. I don't like to see these terms used as some sort of segregation, like we don't matter if we haven't been posting for years or weren't around in the "good ole days". I don't have the insider information that many have, but I try to contribute when possible.

Personally, I come to this board because of the vast amount of insight and knowledge that I gain from all the great posters who have better sources and connections than I do, such as Joyce, Jake, Steve, Dan, and so many others. What would this board be if they all decided to leave and take all their knowledge with them, just as Longtimefan has, because of a societal change?

I understand both sides of the debate, but as someone who comes here to take in as much Syracuse knowledge, conversation, and comeraderie as possible, it pains me to see the people most qualified to provide that information being scared away by a change in environment.

So, I guess this is my plea:

If you're one of those "old-timers" who has that vast wealth of knowledge and insight into Syracuse athletics, please don't silently take that gift with you. If you have taken that gift with you, please consider coming back. Please do your best to find a way to accept the changes when you can, and ignore the ones you have to. If you don't share all that wonderful stuff with us, how will it ever be able to be carried on? I realize it isn't the same place it was back in the AOL days, but it can still be a great place for Syracuse athletics to spread and thrive.

I was going to post the exact same sentiments, but you handled it so well I just gave you a like instead.
Lurking on this board and reading the posts and conversations by the people mentioned above and a few others has greatly enhanced my fanaticism for Cuse basketball and helps me maintain at least a tertiary connection to all of the things I love and miss about Basketball, CNY and the Syracuse community as a whole.

This.

Whining about the kiddies, is worse than whatever the kiddies post.

It disconnects the subject from the action, and magnifies the the impact of the action by reliving it and generalizing it.

Root cause analysis would probably result in this just being one poster whining about another.

But by generalizing it, it becomes the 'end of times'.

I'm still anxiously awaiting the day curt b comes back. Am I the only one who remembers his outbursts from the late 90's / early 00's?

Count me among those veterans (since the AOL days) that have, for the most part, for better or worse, run for the hills as the kiddies have moved in. Not to speak for my longtime friend Longtimefan, but I believe he feels the same, which is too bad, because no one on this board, and I mean no one--and I say this respectfully to any and all wise old-timers posting or lurking here--commands the depth, breadth, knowledge, history and recall of the basketball program to match his. Admittedly I am not an insider so I have frequented these boards for the past 5? years and appreciate all the knowledge ladened posts. I feel my Syracuse knowledge has increased at least 10 fold since I've discovered this oasis in the desert that is the internet. My personality is such that I try and laugh through good times and the tough times (I'm a football fan first) and will go out of my way to try and draw the same response from other posters. Apologies if that ever comes across to any as juvenile as it's not ever my intent to annoy.

That being said the things I most enjoy about this board are the personal stories that come out (makes it feel a bit like a family in here at times), the history lessons from those better versed than myself, the insider info not found elsewhere, and the X's and O's discussions that don't eventually disolve into mindless banter. To me wading through all the junk is worthwhile to get to those points, and we need veteran posters like yourself and plenty of others to make sure that history is shared and not lost on the younger generations of posters.

The dynamic of this board is truly unique, and although I've only met a few to have faces that match their board handles, I feel as though their are quite a few friendships that have been forged with Syracuse being the bond that ties us all together. I find facebook, twitter, etc. far too interpersonal but I like having this forum where there is a shared respect and discussions can go a wide range of directions.

In short, please post more, we need more folks like yourself.

Like ImperialO, its been about 5-6 years as a regular poster for me as well.
The biggest change I've noticed about my own posting habits are, that I'm much more impatient then I used to be. :noidea:
I used to read every post in any thread that looked interesting. Now I find myself "skimming" through a thread unless I see something short, sweet, and concise. There's also a redundancy to certain topics that I just ignore.
At times the overall tenor of the board turns me off as well; lotsa bitching just to be bitching...but that comes with the territory.
With more experience comes greater perspective.
Because of that, its not too difficult to identify the younger posters from the wily vets that post.
Their experience is valuable & much-needed...it keeps things in proper perspective.

***Note: Many of us were refugees from the old Syracuse. com cesspool, where the inmates ran the asylum. I eventually discovered this board which stood out for its intelligence and insight. At times it feels like we devolve to that old Syracuse. com model, but we need the vets to pull everyone back to sanity.

No one was "whining" about the kiddies. Just pointing out a disconnect of one sort or another. My goodness, how did you get there from what I said? I was merely pointing to the march of time changing things from what was to what is. Not good, not bad, not whining, just is.

Longtimefan is just going to love that I included him in a convo not of his own doing. Ha!

This type of post is what seperates this board from R ivals, Scout, syracuse.com etc. The wealth of Syracuse/sports knowledge from posters on this board cannot be beat anywhere in the country. There have also been numerous acts of generosity on this board from the JarHeadJim tailgate surprise, to raffles to raise money, to CTO helping out strugging SU families with her tickets, to hundreds buying tickets for fball and donating them to the boys and girls club. Texan Mark has singlehandly doubled or tripled SU road attendance with his actions and tailgates and his work with SU to set up tickets for the NYC games doesnt get nearly the admiration/credit it should.

As someone who has been a member for 13+ years, many of them as a lurker (I am sure some wish I stayed a lurker) of this board and its previous incarnations I have seen some changes and do wish some of the elder statesmen would come back, but even with some of the newer posters and less patience in todays age this board is still light years ahead of anything else. I cant tell you how many times I have seen something on syracuse.com or espn and when I log on here there is allready a thread 3 pages deep breaking down the situation and providing more information then a dictionary.

I have had the pleasure of meeting numerous board personas in person and I am greatful to have formed friendships at least in my mind with many of them.

There is no better therapy after a bad loss then coming to this board where there are hundreds if not thousands of other fans who know and feel what you are. As much as I love my friends and fiance they simply dont understand what it means to a diehard SU fan to lose unexpectedly in the tourney or lose that key fball recruit at the last second. SO please for those who have been away or are considering staying away from the board, please re-consider this board needs everyone to continue to be the best outlet of SU sports in the country.

Some more posters who disappeared from the early days, andreacg and funkycuse. Mia , prolly never to be heard from again. I will try to connect to them now telepathically.
