Raoul Duke.. so great to see you here today....

That said, I cannot think of too many examples of how the board was "better" back then. It was different, for sure. There was much more interplay between posters. You could always look forward to a good Igor v Tristan V Boca throwdown. The chats were more fun, because we could get wilder.

I miss Boca! One of my favorite posters here.

Since we are talking about the good old days here, thought I would chime in a bit. Like a lot of the guys/gals here in their late 30s, early 40s who were super active on the board in the late 90s and early to mid 00s, things changed in my life. So yeah, marriage, having a kid, starting my own side business - stuff like that just cuts into the amount of time have for this place. Would I rather spend 2 hours on the board or 2 hours playing with my daughter/spending time with my family? That's a no brainer.

Another factor really is 'conversation fatigue'. i think I reached a saturation point on the small subset of heated arguments that come up over and over. There's just not much more to be said that hasn't been covered already. 15 years of man vs. zone debate is tiresome, and now all but pointless because JB has pretty much shown that he's 100% zone now, so arguing about it is just a waste of time. JB's system is what it is, he's been incredibly successful and is an all-time great, but there is little flexibility in that system, so room for debate on tactics/game strategy seems to get smaller and smaller every year.

For me it doesn't have anything to do with new posters or anything like that. I don't think in general the new flock is any better or worse, they're just unfamiliar to most people, and most people don't particularly like a lot of change.

Anyway, Let's Go Orange! Beat the Hoyas!

No they played Memphis again in 2004 in a pre season coaches vs cancer game. We won 77-62. Same night as the Pacers brawl game. 11-19-04

Sorry, my bad. I thought you were talking about the Melo team, because that was also a Coaches v. Cancer game, IIRC.

A couple more good memories from a few years back..

Mason and Rob driving four hours from Syracuse to Philly in February to watch Hak play maybe 20 minutes in a blowout game vs an overmatched opponenet.

Boca's golf outing at Bellevue in Aug 02 where I played with Cheriehoop and family, which is also the last time I played golf.

I was fairly new fan at the time, maybe three years, but these gave me a sense of what a great fan base we have.

So I've skimmed this whole thread and still can't figure out which Admin deleted Raoul Duke's post.

Unless I hear differently, I'm assuming Bayside. We'll throw a beer at him tomorrow, when he's a safe distance from his wife.

I sorta agree with this.

Even though I was witness to it, I'm not sure what is this mythically great board of the past.

I remember being younger and more engaged. I didn't want to miss a post. I got into the back and forth between the personalities, and skip to obvious joustings in that wonderful artifact, thread view. Then I grew older. And that back and forth between posters sorta went away.

That said, I cannot think of too many examples of how the board was "better" back then. It was different, for sure. There was much more interplay between posters. You could always look forward to a good Igor v Tristan V Boca throwdown. The chats were more fun, because we could get wilder.

The worst of the board was during the Forth ages. Getting pounced on for saying anything negative about his 4 rebound games, or whatever, and having his # of screens, used as a counter argument flat out sucked. hypersensitivity about certain types of arguments, and flogging those on the wrong side of it became acceptable. Just being a syracuse fan wasn't good enough. IMO, this started a downward trend.

The place was pretty raw and fun before that. Kinda like stand up comedy. We didnt "ignore" people, etc. Anyone remember the swear-athon we had the night before we migrated from one of the boards?

I don't know. The good posts then, are about as good as the good posts now. Are there less? Maybe.

Today, and for the past few years, there seems to be a lot more of the Jr Admin patronizing etiquette posters.

Before i got turned off, i used to read every single post. I got bored with that, had a kid, etc. I took my own time out for About 9 months. Partially to prove I could. But partially bc i got sick of certain posters jumping down my throat. i understand i bring some of it upon myself. i am opinionated and stubborn.

People do leave simply because it does get old. We shouldn't pine for them. Sometimes it is just time to go. Dick was great though.

We cannot all be pals with JB and Hop. We cannot all be insiders. If that is what people want, then a pay board is the way to go. However , if a more open communication is what people want, there has to be tolerance of the new blood.

Some of it?

I have wondered what became of Raoul Duke, whether MaxFischer was still creating relief maps of Hawaii, where DickinMichigan went, etc. I just thought of BocaDoug recently, rest his soul. Some amazing memories from these boards for sure. I wish the "old" regulars were still posting regularly. Even CurtB.

I'm still anxiously awaiting the day curt b comes back. Am I the only one who remembers his outbursts from the late 90's / early 00's?

One of my all-time favorite board madmen. I still sometimes think he was a front for Fishy.

i dont think so, since he was asking where he was.

that said....throw a beer at him anyway.

and if you miss, just say youre honoring the mets.

maybe they outsourced the banning?? could it have been fishy?? he hasnt banned anyone of us in quite some time, it probably gave him some jollys.

Oh Lord

It's won't be a good barfight without UEO there to throw himself into the mix. We've almost had that happen.

Fishy is in the world of bitter, the America 12 and all...

And just like that, it's back to old times again. Raoul, it's safe to come back out! Vivaperu, you're also being paged. Who else, who else...Yegorange? OOT? Let's have an old home week right during Championship Week.

You'll find OOT on the lax board.

The football only posters are ruining this fantastic thread.

Lighten up, it was a joke.

You've retired the thin skinned award.
the only attribute of swoshy more prevailant in posts than thin skinnedness, is his legendary confusion-ism.

the attribute all of us adhere to, is to line up on the OPPOSITE side of whatever argument swish falls on. youd be 90% correct right there, with the other 10% just being a waiting game till whatever needs to happen...happens.

Oh Lord

I think that the reason that the old board, going all the way back to AOL, was considered "classic" or better was because there were fewer of us, and so we really got to connect personality with posts. You really knew who the other poster was back then. Now, there are far more posters, so it's hard to get a sense of a poster's personality.

This (you and Swish are pretty much on point) I've noticed the same thing on most of the boards I frequent since 2000. This is the only one I still post on - and that's been trying of late. lol This board was intimidating as hell when you first found it because everyone did seem so connected, then you sort of weasel ur way in, you get used to the banter and it sort of becomes what's endearing about it. However, as boards grow you just start to see less names you recognize - as that happens it "feels" different. The quality doesn't change tbh, you just have a lot more posts and you see more names you don't recognize.

There was one late night throw down between Boca and Tristan that was particularly classic. All I can really remember about it is that Fidel Castro's name came up. Hoping Temery saved that one.
