I sorta agree with this.
Even though I was witness to it, I'm not sure what is this mythically great board of the past.
I remember being younger and more engaged. I didn't want to miss a post. I got into the back and forth between the personalities, and skip to obvious joustings in that wonderful artifact, thread view. Then I grew older. And that back and forth between posters sorta went away.
That said, I cannot think of too many examples of how the board was "better" back then. It was different, for sure. There was much more interplay between posters. You could always look forward to a good Igor v Tristan V Boca throwdown. The chats were more fun, because we could get wilder.
The worst of the board was during the Forth ages. Getting pounced on for saying anything negative about his 4 rebound games, or whatever, and having his # of screens, used as a counter argument flat out sucked. hypersensitivity about certain types of arguments, and flogging those on the wrong side of it became acceptable. Just being a syracuse fan wasn't good enough. IMO, this started a downward trend.
The place was pretty raw and fun before that. Kinda like stand up comedy. We didnt "ignore" people, etc. Anyone remember the swear-athon we had the night before we migrated from one of the boards?
I don't know. The good posts then, are about as good as the good posts now. Are there less? Maybe.
Today, and for the past few years, there seems to be a lot more of the Jr Admin patronizing etiquette posters.
Before i got turned off, i used to read every single post. I got bored with that, had a kid, etc. I took my own time out for About 9 months. Partially to prove I could. But partially bc i got sick of certain posters jumping down my throat. i understand i bring some of it upon myself. i am opinionated and stubborn.
People do leave simply because it does get old. We shouldn't pine for them. Sometimes it is just time to go. Dick was great though.
We cannot all be pals with JB and Hop. We cannot all be insiders. If that is what people want, then a pay board is the way to go. However , if a more open communication is what people want, there has to be tolerance of the new blood.
