RB Jawhar Jordan in the transfer portal

Boo.

Lack of OL next year? The inury & medical DQ issues have been beaten to death here. What am I missing, that you have discerned?

WR? Can anyone say what that unit will look like on starting day?

QB? Devito and Shrader and our current frosh - with a new competent QB coach - aren't enough?

Coaching skill? Frankly, and this is just me, I'm sick and tired of the arguments that "coaches didn't use this player properly." If that is what you really, truly, genuinely believe, then fer pete's sake please sit back quietly and wait for the staff to be fired. I'm not going to comment on Gilbert and the offensive performance until we've had a full year with offseason workouts, spring practice, etc.

I will complain that if we don't have a printed playbook, then there is no way for early offensive enrollees to learn the system before actual practice begins. Which I think is a definite, self-inflicted wound.
QB: TD and a transfer.
OL: Cav is still the coach
WR: Taj and?
Gilbert: Was horrible

I mean other than those strengths why would he dare think another team might be better?

QB: TD and a transfer. Questions? Yes.. Definitive, no..
OL: Cav is still the coach I'm not sold on him either, but there are reasons to be optimistic
WR: Taj and? Now do this for every year under Dino. It's always a position group that people worry about and it works out.. unless the OL implodes.
Gilbert: Was horrible I'm withholding judgement until we see a non-covid year with two full camps.

I mean other than those strengths why would he dare think another team might be better?

There are questions, but I don't think it's quite as definitive as you suggest.

As for the thread, if Howard and Adams don't come back - I think they have to find a RB somewhere.

Pound the portal?
I just read 9 pages of woes me, with a sprinkile of meh. For that last 3 pages I had but one thought and it took until page 9 for someone to say it. Jordan entered the portal aaaaaand so did a bunch of other kids that we could bring in to replace him. Since the consensus is that he was competing for the backup job I do think the hand wringing over this one is a bit much, just go get another RB from the portal. Seems when I watch games on TV most teams have better ones than us anyway.

We only have 3-4 more spots left and there are greater needs

I think he was more than competing for a back up job. He was a guy that could get carries as a back up, be on the field at a different position the same time the starter was in, and do damage in the return game. His presence or lack thereof shouldn't make or break the team, but he was a weapon that we could've used. That's something we haven't had many of in a while, and it would be nice to force defenses to account for a few at a time.

When you have a roster that's nearly devoid of elite traits, it's tough to lose a guy with elite speed no matter how we spin it.

Technically have not lost him yet.

The transfer portal’s out of control this year. There’s not enough scholarships to support the # of transfers.

School’s everywhere are losing people.

Jawhar has been hyped pretty good around here, admittedly, by myself included. I think that’s the biggest reason for the hand-wringing was everyone’s initial expectations based on a h.s. highlight film.

But, there’s no way to gauge the value of some of these players to the team without seeing them on a more consistent basis. I just haven’t seen enough of a sample size to make a determination on how impactful this is.

I’ll say this, with the emergence of Tucker, his future was shaping up as a 3rd down RB, Slot, or backup/injury replacement anyway. I just don’t see him as an every down guy.

Sure, you hate to lose the traits that he had. Especially when he’s coming into the point of his career that’s supposed to be the most productive.

But the production, well, that’s surely replaceable.

I’m not sure how this plays out, but ultimately guys are going to have to stay at their schools who enter the transfer portal. There’s a finite # of roster spots in football and more players than scholarships.

Agreed, Losing him from a depth perspective definitely hurts as well as probably a change of pace 3rd down type, but losing him from a production perspective well who knows and from what we have seen probably not much? losing him from the perspective that the board has him pegged as a combo of Reggie Bush and the Ishmael Brothers well yeah I get it that can't be replaced and is a death blow. Somewhere in the middle of all this lies the reality of it.

I know I know, all Dino's fault, mass exodus, 5 years, can't recruit, Shafer's guys, all Dungey, no excuses, pound the portal, lost the team, can't coach guys up, No Northeast ties, can't recruit, la familia, etc etc etc.

After a bruising RB runs you put in the change of pace guy that hits the whole differently. That can really screw up a defense. A kid with Jordan's speed might have 8 carries for 20 yards then breaks a long one. Most teams have different style runners for that reason. We never really got the chance to see that because our offense was a mess and we couldn't run tempo effectively. Then Jordan got hurt. Tucker is the complete back, Lutz is solid, Hough is coming in but I'm not expecting a whole lot from him next year. I imagine he will be used for short yardage and red zone. We still need that speedy wiggly guy. I wonder if the staff tries to bring one in?

Just from a numbers standpoint don't we need one? You are a rolled ankle away from basically having only 2 viable backs. One of our remaining 4 ships I would think has to go RB.

he‘d be a role player, could have been an important piece, but not the guy. we don’t know how good his hands are, which would impact his ability as a returner or slot player

Agreed. And Jordan showed this in 2019. Everybody seams to forget what he looked like then. He played his 4 games, got just 15 carries but for 105 yards and a 7 yds/carry average. And that is with a long of 18 yards so its not like he had a long one that skews that. He had a dynamic 81 yard catch that he broke on his own which displayed what he could do out in space. Plus he has great special teams value. At Louisville, he amassed a career-high 223 all-purpose yards, gained 35 yards on seven rushing attempts, had two receptions for 87 yards, including an 81-yard catch-and-run, and returned three kickoffs for 101 yards against the Cardinals.
Then in 2020 with another horrific OL which could not have been any worse the first two games which is essentially all he played in against a really good UNC team and a good Pitt defense. He had absolutely no room to do anything. I don't even think Tucker would have done much of anything in those games.
He did have a couple carries that looked a little undecisive and made some questionable cuts and that seems to be stuck in everyone's head. Maybe he wasn't used to playing with no space whatsoever and was a little shocked.

I agree that Tucker is the all around dynamic back that would not get unseated. Super excited about him. He is a guy who is probably used to playing with no space as his high school yds/carry was not great. I think he had 5 point something avg his senior year. Was excited for him but didn't know what to expect because of that. Amazing that he came in as a freshman starter in game 3 basically with no offseason and looked like he completely new what was going on. But who knows if he stays healthy and I'd bet he could be gone to the NFL in two more years. Jordan has 4 more years of eligibility left and time to put on more muscle. I do think he's more suited to the non primary back role and a guy you move around and get in the slot a bit more. He could be very dangerous used that way. But we didn't have the opportunity to use him in that role as the staff thought he was the best option as the primary back with everything we lost at the position and the fact Tucker was a true frosh with little prep.

This team needs play makers and he would be one of them moving forward. We are already bringing in a max of 25 guys this year regardless weather he stays or not so you really can't just replace him. This loss hurts. But no its not the end of the world. We move forward.

Agree with everything you said. Good thoughts

I would assume Pena is going to stay at RB weather that was the plan for him or not so that is another player along with Hough. I actually think he could do pretty well there. I'm intrigued about Hough but he hasn't seen much in the terms of a defense in the backfield. Not sure yet how he'll look in that situation.

There were some posts last year from people in the know that the players would run through a wall for Lynch, so my guess would be for whatever the reason, Lynch is not the cause. This came up in the OC threads.
Maybe they suffered too many concussions trying to run through that wall.
