Red #8

He’s not getting fired. Don’t know how many times I have to say this. Why does everyone continue down this road ? Sadiq and Kiyan on slamHS instagram today. 1.6 million people will see that. That stuff matters now these days (fortunately or unfortunately). Kids want to play for Red. His coaching must improve (I know).

After all the warning signs and terrible play we saw early season, my take was "OK, we'll know by early February if Red can can right this ship as it's so bad that we should be able to see progress."

Well, I think we know and it's not quite February...

The 1st 9 minutes of the game yesterday when we were staring at a 25-2 scoreline and what didn't happen on the sideline while this unbelievable horror show developed answered the question unequivocally.

Each minute was a nail in the coffin.

Period.

I'm not debating that the plan is still to bring Red back even tho he can't coach.

But maybe let's contemplate what that means?

If that is still the plan, then this program is an also-ran shell of itself with no hope of sniffing the NCAA tournament.

Our expectations will need be re-calibrated. Eeking out a winning season each year should be the goal going forward and an occasional NIT in a really good year.

It's time to accept our new station as a completely irrelevant program.

Accepting that, I hope the school is ready for the 5K or less consistent home attendances that comes with that approach.

When the product is this bad, the experience is no longer fun, and if the school is ready to double-down on it, people can and will find other things to do (and probably should.)

The coaching staff has alot of work to do to make next years team even decent.
What is our roster next year?
potentially...Bell, Petar, JJ, Moore, Cuffe, Chance and Freeman.
...Anthony, white, womack and Fennell?
subtract Freeman=gone & Westry?
I read scholarships going to 15.
So we could potentially need to add 6 more scholly players. Plus whatever surprises happen.
Per usual we need a center and PG.
who knows now? But we need a couple bullies. We are so soft.
I was gonna write more but theres no way to know what our roster will be like next year.
1 thing is clear...we need some goons.
Only players on this years team that dont scream soft...Cuffe and Petar.
Thought Davis would be there but ??
It’s not rocketship science. Our best strategy is retaining JJ and Freeman with the hope both make a major jump. JJ needs to make the jump from supporting player to being the man every night. While he is our best player this year, he disappears every third or fourth game. He needs to make the kind of jump Mike Gbinije did going into his senior year. If we can keep Freeman as well as bring in a serviceable center at Eddy’s level or better, we should have enough firepower to compete if everyone stays healthy and red can instill an average defense. But JJ + Freeman making the jump from good player to elite seems to be our best chance at success. I don’t think we are going to find a Rak Christmas center in the portal and even if we did, it sounds like the money isn’t there. Likewise for an elite PG. Trying to be realistic about our limitations and what we can get.

Who said that? I know I didn’t. But you have 2 top 30 kids who are coming to play here next year who are getting national exposure. It helps the program and it helps with fundraising. And they are coming to play for Autry. Man some of you will literally find anything bad to say
Repeat after me. High school rankings don’t translate to actual good players for SU anymore

JJ is the next Bacot?

Everyone knows the exposure matters these days, and matters quite a bit. But it matters a small fraction compared to, and come time for, the on-court product and coaching, which Red has not show the ability to do after 2 full seasons.

The pre-season Kiyan-hype will be great! But if the team is .500 again, nobody will care.

The same people talking up Kiyan and Sadiq were saying that we were going to be great this season with Red's guys and Moore and Freeman. This thread is a good trip down memory lane:

many of us already have. The ones that still watch have a LOT of free time (retired or single with no kids or social obligations). Wish that was hyperbole.

JJ is a nice player but not one you build around. He can't shoot or pass. Autry in a vaccum can recognize talent but he seems to have no idea how to get meshing qualities.

We technically have two McDs on our roster right now and three other guys that were top 100.Granted, Chance is a boogeyman, but Red took him in. And where are we now?

Everyone here is vastly, vastly overrating Kiyan's impact - both on and off the court. Y'all are buying up PR speak left, right and center on this just like the same BS that came this year from the program. Kardashians! Rivers of money! Huge social media following! Kiyan and Melo can't touch Bron and Bronny as it pertains to that stuff (btw, Kiyan's financial valuation that I've seen posted here, I will bet all the money in my pockets that that's vastly overrated) and even though Kiyan is better than Bronny, the same results are coming down the track.

We are praying that our rook at PG can come in and hold down the position? We have no answer for the center position but I know we'll overspend on it again. There is no way all our guys are coming back - we can't have Saddiq, Donnie, Kiyan, JJ and Choppa all on the roster for basically two positions.

We have no true wing, no real center and a rook at PG for the 1, 3 and 5 next year. And that's not counting depth unless you want to push out guys to play positions they aren't suited for. At least not on any sort of competitive team.

Right now we are praying that everything, and I mean everything, breaks right for us. And it will never happen. This is all on top of our coaching being awful. We are not prepared in the first 10 minutes of almost every game. We are behind at the first TV TO in almost every game. We cannot defend the high pick and roll, which is something that literally every team uses. We wanted to run, then got an out of shape center and a PG that shouldn't even be on our team.

As I've said asking for O/Us in previous posts, right now, do people have faith enough in Red to put in a response to this post that they BELIEVE we will make the NCAAT? I'm not even asking about seeding, just make the tourney.

Our two biggest problems on defense are Eddie and JJ. They consistently are out of position. Eddie’s defense on his man is ok, but he’s never in a help position. JJ is just a turnstyle on defense. His footwork is awful. I don’t think he’s ever been in a defensive stance. He’s always following his man instead of forcing his man out of position.

Doesn’t mean anything on the court. When the product is bad and we are still losing there will be no hype. Ace Bailey put up like 37 last night, he’s had several MONSTER games - people barely talk about Rutgers and they still stink. This doesn’t do anything anymore man you gotta let it go

Great thread. I'm viewing the Sadiq/Kiyan talk as somehow we're basically going to replace our 5-star(s) with 4-stars and be better. Red needs to murder the portal to make the tournament, and I'm not holding my breath.

This feels like Syracuse football with Dino in November of 2022. We have to run out the clock for another 13 months.

Yup and if we back into the tournament somehow with Melo money which isn't a long-term recipe for success they will extend Red then Melo money will go away and we will be stuck with Red, a terrible coach, for more years and give him a raise just like we were stuck with Dino when he would sneak us into a bowl at 6-6.

Because that's what Red's performance merits, and it would happen at any serious program. It seems like only folks that have access and/or know Red personally are holding on to him at this point.

Imagine how ugly it's going to be when the team is still uncompetitive and Kiyan is playing in front of a mostly empty dome. It's going to tarnish Melo's legacy, and be ugly for all involved. It's a nightmare scenario that many here seem to be happily racing towards.

I don't think it will tarnish Melo's legacy at all. His time came and went. He was legendary and won/led us to a title in his only college season. His son (and the team's) play 23 seasons after his lone season should not have any impact on his legacy.

I hope you're right, but I foresee a messy divorce if next year becomes a fiasco.

The program is reeling. Doubling down on bad decisions for next year will likely crush what little is left that JB built. That it could happen around Melo is almost poetic. Thank goodness that turnarounds in basketball can be quick and next time there will be no loyalty/nepo hire.

yeah because two freshmen will come in and magically get us ten wins.

lol my man. rutgers had the #2 and #3 recruit. look at them. does it help the program if we suck ? no.

idk what your point is.
two guys get them 40 points.
Then they lose by 8-12 per game.

But Red can claim "PROGRESS" after the past two years of blowouts.
(which the influencers and press are finally publicizing/realizing)
