Regarding The Board Of Trustees...

Now Cantor should say-

"We are embarrassing ourselves. Find a way to keep him."

but the sentence would have to continue as folows: "...understanding that's just my suggestion, as I'm not going to be here (having announced my resignation) and it's really your decision as you're the people who will have to live with it at the end of the day".

Paraphrasing

Cantor to TGD at bowl game

"He is embarrassing us. Get rid of him"

And so it was done.

No.

Not even close.

TGD was not even in the suite- he was being interviewed by Mike Tirico at halftime.

And Cantor was on the receiving end of the conversation/instruction.

Oh and I forgot - the 3rd most important function of a Board is promotion of the business/school and fundraising!

To my original points in the initial thread was just 2 things:
1. Competitive Compensation for DM & staff - Bees addressed that stating it was or is being corrected so I can't argue that point anymore
2. Facilities fundraising

I will state that their has been no perceived leadership taken on upgrading the football facilities - maybe instead of drinking wine somebody needs to step up and take responsibility and provide some leadership.

I will give Ped State a lot of credit for acting swiftly to keep its HC.

I understand you are frustrated. So are many of us.

But don't take it out on cto. I am quite sure she has done more for Syracuse University than the rest of the people on the board will ever do. Blame the NCAA, blame out of control state legislatures, blame the AD office, blame other members of the BOT, blame all SU footballs, hell blame me.

But leave cto out of it. She is the last person you should be pointing fingers at.

There has been much mis-information posted here regarding the responsibility of a university board of trustees ... or for that matter, the board of directors/trustees of any organization.

The Board of Trustees has nothing to do with the day-to-day management of the athletic department, just as they have nothing to do with the day-to-day management of Newhouse or Maxwell. Their major responsibility is to select a chancellor and have fiduciary responsibility for the university. They participate in search committees for the chancellor and the deans of the various schools and dean equivalents, and they approve the hiring of deans and dean equivalents.

They confer tenure and adopt an annual budget. They are also expected to make significant financial contributions to the school...either to the general fund or for specific purposes ... e.g., individual schools or specific building projects. The administration comes to the board with proposals for building projectsalong with their proposed funding.

They don't determine anyone's salary except for the chancellor's. The rest of the salaries are determined by the management of their respective departments, as it is done in all organizations.

Please keep in mind that SU is an academic institution, and all decisions regarding the university are made in that context.

Who signs off on the salary of the football coach? Are you saying that Gross can pay the guy whatever he wants? I find that hard to believe.

Sounds like a lot of finger pointing at this point and like clockwork with people nowadays, it’s nobody’s responsibility for anything. It’s not the BOT’s job, it’s not the Chancellors job, it’s not the Athletic Directors job. When in doubt just blame the fans for their lack of support.

By the way, football and the revenue it generates is part of the academic institution. Lets not pretend Syracuse is an Ivy.

yeah, i thought it was something along the lines of a wee one call.

In case anyone is curious who sat right behind her for the entire 1st half, that was me. And not to be crude, but that horrible stadium is so old school designed, that she was sitting between my legs the entire half. I'd say approximately 15 times, she turned to me (because it was awkwardly so intimate) and said "what are we even doing out there?". I didn't know what to say. If there were smart phones, I could have showed her a website I guess.

Once the halftime whistle blew, no one returned to those bleacher seats. All back to the luxury box from that point on.

Thanks again again and again CTO, one of the most fun and interesting nights I've ever had.

Hanging curve for Milly...

I know what decisions the BOT makes at cornell.. and i know what ones were made with so little consideration of consequences that tens of millions were spent for nothing. and I know what coaching decisions where not made by the BOT here, but I do know some coaches are no longer here because the BOT said so..

This is the one line that scares me. Football decisions don't happen in a vacuum, isolated from academics. Smart investments that return revenue, awareness, increased applications, etc are wins across the board. Athletics are a revenue stream and a vehicle to raise up every aspect of a university.

I don't suspect our move to the ACC was done with academics at the forefront (though it's a nicer neighborhood in that regard). It was done to increase revenue. Our decisions on coaches/facilities fall under the exact same umbrella as that. The decisions should be in alignment...or the first decision/investment will be a waste.

i'll ask others that were there as to who said what to whom and when. but its semantics and i maintain my point. it wasnt some bot meeting or anything. the decision was made right there at the bowl, unless you want to tell me that after that whole scene, a bot meeting was convened and it was voted upon.

i'll go 1 step further. when grob was hired. tgd put togther a slate of candidates to interview. that was grob, lewis, gray and henderson. it followed his model that he felt worked at usc. a defensive background with nfl experience. gray was with buffalo, henderson was with the jets, lewis was with the giants, and while grob was with texas, he came from the nfl. after initial interviews, it came down to grob and gray. cantor and tgd (maybe others) interviewed them (i think in philly) and selected grob. did that selection then go to to the bot to be voted on?

thats right, you were there too. you dont need to answer aqnd it doesnt matter to my original point that the bot doesn't make all decisions on who to hire/fire, but do you remember who told who, to fire P? i know the end result waqs cantor telling tgd.

I honestly believe that the janitor came in to clean TGD's office and mistakenly threw Gray, Lewis and Henderson's resumes/applications in the garbage missing He Who Shall Not Be Named's which had fallen under TGD's desk. The rest is history as they say.

hell blame me.

this one works for me.

have you given anymore thought to my suggestion the other night about an "SUTomCat Indoor Practice Facility"? :)

i dont know who signs off on the salary for the football coach, but i am 99% sure the bot doesn't sign off on the salary of coaches for the minor sports. maybe they don't for football either and tgd is just given a football budget. then if that budget has to be increased because he wants to give the coach more money which would exceed the budget, then maybe he has to go to the bot to increase the budget.

I am stunned by this post and a number of responses. The only thing not mentioned so far in the role of Board of Trustees is that, like any organizational structure, there is an ultimate authority that is accountable for the organization. The pyramide structure, that is almost always employed, requires this. That being the case, The Board of Trustees has the power to fire, as well as hire, the Chancellor, who in turn is the immediate supervisor of the Director of Athletics, who is the immediate supervisor of the Head football coach. If there is anyone that does not recognize this, there isn't anything that can be said to educate. It is incredibly naive to believe that the Board of Trustees does not have enormous power to influence or force decisions. If anyone has ever served as an executive officer or on a board of directors, you would know this. There is constant power and control that goes on at this level and any CEO keeps close contact with their superiors to gauge what the majority wants. If they do not, or wish to go a separate way, they will not last in that position! 'Nuff said!

Yeah...I can buy that

And it sounds like this is exactly what transpired when CEO Cantor turned to AD Gross and said "Fire Coach P."

While that is all true and I have first hand expereince in organizational development and structure, you have to be sure that people understand the word influence or force. If I want to fire someone, I have to get the OK of my boss (and HR), but not my bosses boss or the VP. But if the VP wanted me to fire someone, you bet I have to fire them. So it works down but not necessarily up. Also, there is a difference between a singular person saying fire someone, and a board voting on it.

you have to love the pains that chip goes through to explain why the only woman who has ever ventured near the horrifying festering grey pile of brillo pads otherwise known as his netherregions was there. "it's not what you think!"

the wee one squared

I have told you the story.

Yes, there was no meeting.

Yes the decision was made in the suite at halftime in the heat of the moment.

And yes BOT members pushed for it while at that moment raising money to buy Paul out.

It was a bad moment that set the program back years revealed poor management and the dangervof having lay fans with money making football decisions.

I defer all questions to my attorney Bill Orange. I drank an awful lot of free alcohol that evening. I think I was hearing fire him everywhere I turned, but at least half of those could have been inside voices.

Here's 2 more highlights.

1. Gross to me before the game, while we're watching GT's band dwarf ours on a field outside the stadium, "we're going to have a much bigger marching band here"
2. On the way down the ramp after the game, Gross to me and JKinPhilly "You guys come to my office any time, I want to talk to young alumni like you about ideas you have". At that moment, about 6 of the Bud Light cans I stuffed in my jacket on the way out, fall out and just start slowly and awkwardly rolling down the ramp. I look at Gross and say "yeah, I'll get back to you"

Good times.

No kidding. I remember calling Little Joe and saying "you'll never guess who's sitting between my legs". He said, "a guy you just met in the bathroom?". Weird that he wasn't right. That particular time anyway.

That is hilarious. Well done. I can picture it in my mind!

Make that day and evening. Highlight was the police escort we got. On the bus to the game, not to the klinker after.

1. D also said (right before your quote) to me "where's the rest of our band?"
2. Bud Light cans? I remember that we cleared all the bottles of Heineken out of the refrigerators. I think I had about 12 in my SWAG bag.

As for everything else, just call me "Johnny On The Spot." ;)
