I’m not comparing their games & skillsets, but moreso their situations & hype coming in. Watching Moyer’s HS tape, I had serious doubts about him contributing much as an underclassman. Kiyan has a ton of advanced skill including a full array of pro level moves. The issue is that he performs them with about half the speed & explosiveness required for them to work at the P5 level. He just turned 18 in early March so there’s plenty of time for his body, athleticism, & strength to improve but my expectations are pretty tempered. Kiyan likely has more long term potential but I feel that Elijah Moore, who entered college nearly a full year older, was much more prepared to contribute as a freshman than Kiyan will be.
My biggest worry is defense. Moore had all the physical requirements to be a good defender but lacked the desire. To me, Kiyan’s biggest weakness is a lack of foot speed. I see him struggling to both stay in front of college players on D & beat them off the dribble on offense.
EDIT: I’d also just like add that my opinion is based off of watching not only every highlight posted here throughout his career but also 7 of his full EYBL Scholastic games this year, including their 4 conference tourney games in earlier this March. He played well & was his team’s leading scorer in 3/7 of these games. I’m excited to watch him again in the Chipotle Nationals in early April.
LI Lutheran opens in the quarterfinals vs Prolific Prep on Wed 4/3 at 2pm on ESPN2.
