Class of 2025 SG Kiyan Anthony (NY) COMMITTED & SIGNED TO SYRACUSE (11/15/24)

Kiyan gives me Matt Moyer vibes. Overrated by fans for non-basketball reasons, has some skill, but ultimately lacks the athleticism & physicality required to be a difference maker at the P5 level, at least as an underclassman. There’s certainly potential there & he seems like a driven, hard worker who obviously has access to high end training but, watching his highlights, I don’t see much that’s going to work at the P5 level. Hope like hell the young man proves me wrong.

Kiyan is the 6th leading scorer in the best HS league in the country. Matt Moyer played in some sht league in Ohio.

I'm always confused why people comment on athleticism & physicality on high school players that are in these leagues with such authority on the subject.

These HS prep leagues are a different beast. All these kids playing are going to be D1 athletes somewhere and going to have NIL deals soon if they don't already. They're not banging every day and putting it all on the line in the trenches every game. These kids have agents and want to get into the next phase of the game. Lutheran is also winning games and that's all that matters really.

This will open a whole other can of worms. Take JG3 for example, another SG. He was known for being physical and athletic across NY state in both basketball and football. *But that's at Glens Falls High School Class B not in these elite prep leagues.

JG3 may as well been playing against 5 year olds compared to the league Kiyan is playing in.

Moyer went to South Kent in CT his last year and was named CT Gatorade player of the year.

For reference, South Kent produced some hoopers back in the day. Dorell Wright, Andray Blatche (Syracuse area native) went straight to NBA. Isiah Thomas, our boys Dion and Eli Hughes, Russ Smith, Jack McClinton.

Sure there are more I’m too lazy to look up.

Moyer was athletic, the problem is that was all he was. Really bad player comp.

Kiyan doesn’t play the violin.

I’m not comparing their games & skillsets, but moreso their situations & hype coming in. Watching Moyer’s HS tape, I had serious doubts about him contributing much as an underclassman. Kiyan has a ton of advanced skill including a full array of pro level moves. The issue is that he performs them with about half the speed & explosiveness required for them to work at the P5 level. He just turned 18 in early March so there’s plenty of time for his body, athleticism, & strength to improve but my expectations are pretty tempered. Kiyan likely has more long term potential but I feel that Elijah Moore, who entered college nearly a full year older, was much more prepared to contribute as a freshman than Kiyan will be.

My biggest worry is defense. Moore had all the physical requirements to be a good defender but lacked the desire. To me, Kiyan’s biggest weakness is a lack of foot speed. I see him struggling to both stay in front of college players on D & beat them off the dribble on offense.

EDIT: I’d also just like add that my opinion is based off of watching not only every highlight posted here throughout his career but also 7 of his full EYBL Scholastic games this year, including their 4 conference tourney games in earlier this March. He played well & was his team’s leading scorer in 3/7 of these games. I’m excited to watch him again in the Chipotle Nationals in early April.

LI Lutheran opens in the quarterfinals vs Prolific Prep on Wed 4/3 at 2pm on ESPN2.

Moore was one of the few guys I saw trying to play defense.

Like many young players, I saw effort on D at the beginning of games but it often dissipated, mostly as we got down by wide margins. He was often guilty of weak, arm waving close-outs instead of moving his feet & trying to get over screens.

I agree with Tuttle on this one. I saw Moore giving his all on defense but seemed badly overmatched quite often. Don’t really feel he was on the court long enough for it to dissipate. He was just plain bad.

I was concerned about what looked like bad shooting form.
