Some may think that's an unfair or a judgmental statement, which is fine.

But anyone who thinks attempting a 48 yard field goal with a college kicker who does not have an NFL future instead of going for a conversion on 4th and FREAKIN' ONE YARD simply doesn't get it and shouldn't be the head coach of an ACC program.

Defensive coordinator or assistant coach? Fine. Great. But the guy making all the important calls - not only on gameday but every other day of the week? Nope.

This isn't an arbitrary scenario. It's black and white. You go for the conversion every time. If you don't get it - oh well. Time for the defense.

Now more than ever a major college football program needs a head coach who understands basic probability, among other things. Hell, it's not even understanding probability - it's simply having common sense.

I see some good young talent in this program but they're not going anywhere with this guy, imo.

I think it was dumb to try a field goal. I'm still irritated as hell we didn't go for it. But Murphy has hit a 50 yarder before, so it's not like 48 is wildly out of his range.

Yeah, but we all knew it wasn't happening.

48-harder on the road from the left hash mark.

On grass.

While I would have preferred going for it over the field goal, I prefer going for the field goal there over punting.

The ball was at the 30.

It was either go for it or kick a field goal.

I was more irritated that we didn't go for 2 in 2nd overtime than that. Our defense couldn't stop anything at that point. I'd rather us lose the game on our terms than theirs.
How dare you try to take the game away from the kids. How dare you.

We should have gone for the throat. I agree 100%.

Dungey made that nice quick snap throw TD, we had their D on their heels. Perfect time to end the game. And you know what? If we lost on that decision, I'd be ok with that.
I'd feel a lot better about losing like that too. In fact, I'd be encouraged that the staff showed the confidence to seize the moment. Still disappointed in the loss, but I'd feel a lot more confident and as though there was a lot less to question.

Neither do 85% of HCs elsewhere. These guys understand the Xs & Os of the game but fail at strategy and time management. Chances are that we would be frustrated with any HC. A HC should be evaluated on whether he is maximizing the talent on the squad and whether the team is fundamentally sound (ie well coached). If you are getting to bowls and not underachieving, I am fine with a HC. I don't think Shafer's teams the last 3 years have been well coached and I think we have underachieved. He has 6 games to change that IMO.

Totally agree. i really was hoping they would do it and if we lost that way I would have thought it was a gutsy call and a good one.

Classy. This whole thread is filled with examples of our ridiculously poor fan base and their intelligence.

Ask Riley Dixion if he has no balls.

So what? Smart fans would have supported it.

How often do you see any team do that?

Shaffer has no balls. Lots of tough talk with no tough to back it up. Let them play. He is slowly losing this team.
This mentality makes no sense to me. He has three straight weeks gone with a fake punt, gone for it on multiple 4th downs and on the whole has clearly taken more risks than in the past. At the end of the day it's risk management and risk vs. reward choice for him.

He is no longer wildly conservative never trusting anything but his defense. He is taken more chances, he's just not going for it all, all the time.

If Murphy makes that kick and the rest of the game plays out exactly as it did, right up until the FG attempt at the end of regulation there is no overtime.

Note: that doesn't mean we win the game of course.

Many people said why don't you trust your offense? My thought was, he clearly trusted Murphy to make that kick, which he made before in a big spot last year. As a result of the first quarter disaster and failure to put up any points, we lost the game.

On grass.

Against the wind

Into the sun

On a Saturday

In October

Before dinner

With a crowd watching

Paper due on Monday

Girl friend watching

Teammates stressed

Coach on the hot seat

Board on meltdown

Etc

Normally I would agree, but our defense was not stopping them at all and our offense was not exactly a juggernaut against them. I was always told that you play for the tie (and overtime) at home, and for the win on the road. I was also annoyed that he didn't use a time out and let UVA run the clock down to 2 seconds before they attempted a FG. We would have gotten a chance to do something...maybe a return...maybe a couple of pass completions to get in FG range. Trying to freeze a sr. kicker from gimme range was a waste of a TO.
