Shafer

This forum’s obsession with coming up with painfully stupid reasons to dislike him isn’t healthy.

There’s a perfectly good school to hate 4 hours down the road. Do something useful and hate them.

I don’t dislike him for his time at SU. He did the best he could. Wasn’t his fault he was in over his head. And he was a good DC.

I do, however, think it was quite childish and in poor taste to light up a victory cigar while walking through the concourse after a game at SU.

Good luck to him, but not going to root for him.

Agree. As a man who preached about building good men, and building character, he sure showed little when they won. I get that it is all nonsense but we owe him absolutely nothing as a fan base.

Looks like a Phillies Blunt. Smells up the house.

He wasn’t in over his head.

He never had a decent healthy QB for an entire season.

And Red Auerbach lit many victory cigars - nothing wrong with it.

couldnt understand all along why Army wasnt a bigger Fav in this one. I based on the fact that Army kids are in shape all the time at a much higher level than all these teams who have to figure out how to practice in this new world and playing the Option and now being in great shape is not a good thing.

I don't think Red did it in a no- smoking building. Shafer should have gotten a citation just as any of us would have.

I'm not sure why you think the physical training for Army's football team should be any better than any other D1 program. There's military fitness and there's football fitness and they aren't the same. I served with ex D1 football players as well as West Pointers. Some of the best PT test performers were neither of those. I will say the West Pointers seemed to enjoy brigade runs more than most of us ROTC folks.
Also, it is always a good thing to be in great shape.

Agreed.
But a good way to stop something obnoxious like lighting of a victory cigar...is to win the game. Beat him and we’re not talking about this, soooo...power to him.

He was definitely in over his head. He’s not a HC at any level for a reason. Instead of being grateful SU gave him his first HC gig he acted like a jilted teenager. And then smoking in a non-smoking building, come on really?
Great DC and enjoyed watching his defenses but he’s not a HC

because army kids had access to facilities, when many other athletes did not.. they also are used to a regimen and a structure thru the last several months when most athletes were sent home to figure things out in the spring

Are people really bent because he lit a cigar in a non smoking facility? Lol. Do you also make citizens arrest for Jay Walker's when you see them? If you don't like the guy just say it. If you think he is a bad coach then fine. He lit a cigar in a non smoking facility? That is just weak sauce...you may want to chillax a little.

You are missing the point.

the non-smoking facility part is so far from the point that I’m alarmed that anyone may think this is the problem people have with the cigar.

He not only did a poor job coaching, he re-lowered our program to laugh out loud joke status. The cigar just reflected his personal character outside of his coaching abilities. Showed the true colors of an otherwise somewhat likable person. Glad he felt accomplished. The real accomplishment will be when Dino has fully moved us on from the Shafer era.

I wish him well as a D coordinator and a human being.

Not missing the point. People actually referred to lighting up in a non smoking facility. Read the prior comments again. I get it, people are offended because they think it was a classless move. Everyone knows he nuked our program...that is not rocket science or sanskrit. Like I said if ya don’t think he can coach...fine...if ya don’t like him...fine. if ya think lighting a stogie was a richard move...fine. Though I find it funny that people on him and its ok. If you dont like that he lit up a stogie cuz it is a non smoking facility that is effin hilarious.

It’s childish to care 6(?) years later. The guy beat his former employer who fired him in their house and with a mid major team. I get his actions. What’s your justification for your childish and embarrassing position?

Also, as far as in over his head, who knows? He never really got much of a shot to prove one way or another. He had a MAC-level coaching staff that was assembled at the last minute. He made a bowl game in year 1, so he couldn’t fire them. He had a bad year 2, and made staffing adjustments. He was then fired in year 3. He ultimately started in an impossible position, had a limited budget, and had a boss change, which led to real and material road blocks for attracting talent (who wants to work for a guy about to get fired, and how many AD’s don’t want to bring in “their guy?”). The above is just from a staffing perspective. Add in the other many considerations (like a young injury-prone QB), and making and definitive judgement on the guy is idiotic.

Red lit many a cigar in the War Memorial, Old Armory and State Fair arena where the Nats originally played, Smoking used to be allowed even in theatres back in the day. In the great Nat Knick rivalry the NY sports writers used to complain that every man, woman and child smoked to befuddle the Knicks. (Don't ask me to explain this) And that the fans tugged on the wires supporting the basket when the Knicks were shooting fouls.
Oh, and Red once knocked his son over backwards when the kid drew a T for taunting a ref. Don't think he lit one after that game.

nailed it. He was an unhinged nut when he was our HC. Needed/deserved to be fired after that 3rd year, it was clear he was not HC material
