So here's what I think we know

Hey Millhouse, I've been meaning to ask you since it's tough to get a read on this, but how do you feel about Ryan Nassib?
forget what i think of him and forget what you think of him. you shouldn't have so much certainty about marrone's philosophy when he hasn't got a guy he recruited in there yet. we'll know soon enough.

Nassib will be encouraged to leave the pocket and move the ball on the ground when those opportunities are present, which will be a departure from last season when it was clear that he was instructed to avoid running.

This is the mentality I see in Marrone that just drives me nuts and is depressing as hell.

It seems to me that the best football coaches aren't constantly worrying about every single little bad thing that could possibly happen when they come up with their strategies and coach their players. Instead, they instruct their players to do whatever they can to move the ball and score points. The entire offense was handcuffed in 2011 because Marrone was afraid of the small chance that he would have to play the 2nd string QB if his QB happened to run past the line of scrimmage a few times per game.

Oh Lord

I'm not saying Nassib is RGIII, but limiting Nassib's options at all - no matter how small - simply out of fear is just dumb.

Yup. It worries me.

fear of fumbles (not fear of injury) might explain it. i think it's justified.

Nassib can't protect the football when he's on the run? He has pretty strong arms, I would think he'd be fully capable.

you're kidding, right?

i agree that nassib is very strong. but that doesn't mean he doesn't fumble (edit fumble too much - didn't mean to imply that you said he'd never fumble)

Aren't most of his fumbles a result of getting sacked and/or blindsided?

Why do I get the feeling that Ashton Broyld is being groomed to be the star of this offense NOW? Tons of articles referencing him, and even on the ESPN Big East Blog when AA did her "in camp" preview of Syracuse she singled him out as the most important player to watch.

Man I hope he lives up to the hype.

of course most of his fumbles come from sacks - he doesn't run much. but maybe marrone has seen enough fumbles on scrambles to not want him to do it more.

he's never fumbled a punt return, maybe we should have him do that.

All I can remember is him running around like a chicken with his head cutoff at Pitt, holding the ball in one hand like a loaf of bread. Result: Fumble. What bothered me the most about it was that he had done it several times during the game and kept doing it, which says to me that none of the coaches addressed it on the sideline.

"He doesn't run much." Yet he's run just enough for Marrone to tell him to stop running, as opposed to just teaching him how to protect the football. You know, what coaches are supposed to do.

ok fine so marrone is bad at teaching players to protect the ball. which coaches are known as the best at teaching guys not to fumble?

most coaches deal with fumblers by not giving them carries.

Hackett gets the heat because he is the offensive coordinator, whether thats in name only or not is up for debate. Either way at some point Doug and the program are goign to have to acknowledge the offensive system is not working if we cant break the 90th mark in total offense in year four. This isnt Utica College were not a D3 program where coaches kids can come in and learn on the job for 5 years, this is a D1 program when your in year four and the offense is still in neutral things have to change or people need to be shown the door.
Keep in mind that both QB recruits, and TE Provo, spoke very highly of Hackett. If he can recruit offensive talent for his position, you should be happy with him as he grows into his role. Hackett is a positive, energetic presence -- something the program needs.

Sure, Doug took a chance in hiring a young deputy (after his first OC washed out). And that decision is about to bear fruit.

In the meantime, you might want to focus on the real source of the meat and potatoes offense to this point (Doug) and realize that Doug was the OC in 2010, and took one step back to give Hackett a larger role in 2011. And maybe there is another step this year.

that's the realization I might come to when I see him play a qb that he recruited
One of the first things Marrone did when he became HC was recruit Greg Paulus, so that has already happened.

For those that think a big reason the offense has been so dismal/hard to watch over the past 2 years is because Nassib has been forced to play with limits on him, there certainly is reason for hope based on what Paulus was allowed to do in year one of the DM era.

if what paulus was allowed to do is reason for hope, i'll cast my lot with the pessimists.

i don't think paulus represents what marrone is looking for from his offense or his qb. i think getting paulus was a flyer with limited downside given what the alternatives were

Yeah, I'm with Millhouse on that one. That season's offense was still pretty bad.

He had 5 last year, lost 3. It's not the end of the world. And if he has the same progression this year, as he did last, he'll have 3 fumbles and lose 1.

again they didn't run him . cause and effect. Not running limited fumbles.

Same number of carries as the year before.

Ryan lacks awarness. Something that you either have or you dont. The positive about him running the ball is that most of his hits will come from in front of him. He fumbles when he is hit from behind or the side and doesnt sense it coming. I actually dont think i have ever seen him fumble on an actual run.

it doesn't take hundreds of carries in games for astute coaches to see it.

they stopped running him pretty quick after planning on it in 09

it is hard to find fumble stats but he has always been shaky holding the ball

look at me charitably giving the benefit of the doubt
