How is that an NCAA violation? He got a recommendation to go somewhere to get his phone fixed, so he goes there gets his phone fixed. Owner/Worker says I am a huge fan and takes a picture, posts it on Facebook. It's not like he is promoting a business or getting anything for free.

Where is the violation?

Where is the violation?

Ask Jerome Smith. He appeared on a radio show last season, and the assistant producer tweeted a picture of him holding up a sign.

SU had to report it to the NCAA.

They're not wearing SU gear and all they're doing is standing in line. That's not even an add, just someone's personal picture they posted.

Are you looking at the same picture I am?

An SU Texas Bowl sweatshirt isn't SU gear?

It's not posted on someone's personal Facebook page. It's posted on the company's page. It could be argued that they're endorsing the product.

It's not that different from the photos that got Rome and AB in trouble last year. And it got someone fired from the radio station.

Better safe than sorry. The NCAA takes no prisoners. :(

Not nearly the same thing.

What if I am eating at McDonald's and in walks T Hunt. I catch him outside after he buys his meal and have someone take our picture with the Golden Arches clearly in the background both wearing SU gear and post it to my Facebook page. Is that a violation?

Then I post it to the McDonald's Facebook page or website. Is that a violation?

Is he Promoting McDonald's in either, nope. Is he being paid by myself or McDonald's, nope.

Where would be the violation?

Completely different scenario

What if I owned the McDonald's?

How are any of these different that the picture taken?

Then yeah, if you owned the McDonald's and you posted a picture of them posing inside your McDonald's saying thanks for your support, then that would be interpreted as an endorsement of your business. Not saying it's the best rule or anything, but it's the rule. And it doesn't matter if the athlete doesn't receive any compensation for it, they can't appear to endorse any products or companies (unless it's Nike, but that's a different story).

Another ridiculous rule thought out and brought to us by the NCAA. Must be a violation of their ability to make money off athletes and not share it.

It is a violation and SU will report it to the NCAA and send the business a letter requesting the picture is removed. End of issue.

I guess Team Tech doesn't care. I posted on their FB page under the picture that they might want to consider taking the picture down, as it might be an NCAA violation. My comment has mysteriously vanished.

Yup. Just telling you what I would tell the ncaa.

They arent holding any signs, they didn't make any money or receive benefits, and nothing in that picture would be any different than you and I standing in line at the store.

Johnny Football. I think we're OK.

Before I took that screen shot, there was another comment saying they hope the NCAA doesn't see this and that was deleted as well

This board is concerned about every little tiny violation (see: CuseTwitterArmy, SU official twitter feed mentioning recruits etc). This is such small potatoes stuff that isn't worthy of a thread. SU will self-report as they do for many other things annually and move on. Thats what the Compliance dept is for. This is not even close to a big deal.
