-Until the under 4 timeout, it just seemed like one of those games where we would just say at the end that it wasn't our night. Much credit to our guys for fighting and scrapping hard till the very end.

-I thought the biggest shot of the game was when down 57-48 and Gonzaga having total control of the game, Cooney knocking down that three was huge, along with the defensive plays down the stretch. He has really come along strong in the tourney after the rough 1st half against Dayton. Like I said on my pod a few weeks ago, I would've loved nothing better than for him to make us all eat crow after his struggles. Well hey, it's now served up on my plate like a pile of spaghetti.:)

-Robey's activity throughout the game was huge. With our low shooting % and struggles to finish around the rim, every 2nd chance opportunity that he helped provided turned out to make a difference in a low scoring battle.

-Can't underestimate Frank's contributions in the 1st half. Not just his running of the offense, but the 5 points that he scored came in timely fashion at a point when Gonzaga was building towards a double digit lead. Hated the judgment to risk that bad alley-oop pass to Robey in the 2nd half when we were starting to build some momentum. Gonzaga unfortunately went on to take control of the game after that until the end. Frank's still young and he'll learn, but no doubt he's going to be a good one.

-G wasn't perfect but love the fact that he stayed in attack mode and you sensed that the stage at this point will never be too big for him and he'll go down swinging no matter what.

-Mali is such a frustrating player to watch offensively at times. One game he can go off and score at all three levels and make it a thing of beauty. After that he'll hit witness protection status for the next few games, where his shot is way off and he constantly drives into no mans land. I'll say this though, he's not shy about shooting and had an impressive finish around the hoop that should've been an and-1 in the 2nd half.

-UVA is obviously a tough matchup and are also probably the most physical team left in the field. I'm sure there will be some concern if we'll have enough in the tank tomorrow after the grind last night. I'll just say that most of us thought the same after beating UConn in the Bahamas, then having to face a big and athletic A&M team the very next day. Hopefully with a day to rest, the batteries will be all charged up for tomorrow. Can't expect to shoot 36% again and win. My hope is that some of those shots that we missed around the rim yesterday will go down tomorrow. UVA isn't a great shot blocking team but they contest every shot well. So I think the difference between winning and losing will be how we can finish in those one on one situations, unless we simply go bonkers from 3. I think our defense will be fine as UVA is prone to go through long scoring droughts at times. Let's hope we can take advantage of that if it happens.

-I'm very proud of this bunch, regardless if we win or lose tomorrow. After all the bullsh!t that has surrounded the program over the past year or so, it only serves these players right to experience a moment and time like this. Hopefully it'll cap off with a final four trip.

News flash, UVA is predicted to win!

Great thoughts Francis. I thought Howard was a little bit of an unsung hero in this game. He kept us in it in the first half. The oop was a tough one, but if that had connected it would have been one of the plays of the tournament and would have altered the game strongly in our favor (I think). JB was a little... miffed though! I feel very very good about Frank's future at Cuse.

Just checked - they didn't lose to St. John's.
The loss that apparently will never be forgotten by some.

I wish there was a hockey assist stat for rebounds. Roberson would have had a ton.

When he's running with a high motor, he changes the whole dynamic of our team.

I've seen a lot of non-SU fans saying Lydon fouled Perkins on that last shot...watching it again, I don't know how you'd ever expect that to be called a foul. Lydon basically went straight up and blocked all ball, but because Perkins was jumping forwards on the floater, his body kept moving so that his elbow hit Lydon.

even if that was a foul, the refs owed us one for blowing the out of bounds call

That would be akin to calling an offensive foul because the shooters arm hits the defenders on the follow through on a drive. Never going to happen.

That was as clean a defensive play as you're ever going to see in an end-game situation (except for Warrick vs Kansas:)).

Funny thing about the game yesterday, I think at one point in the first half I may have said:

"Cooney's penetration/finishing, Frank's shooting, and Roberson's energy are really keeping us in this game!"

Never thought I'd be saying that combo.

Richardson seems to be fearless and continues to look for his shot and find a way to score even when his shot is off or he's not finding success. Not all players have that mentality. IMO, that tenacity and self-confidence will serve him well and allow him to elevate his game to the next level, even if he isn't as gifted athletically as some others. The best is yet to come.

They could have called it but it would have been really inconsistent with the level of contact they'd been letting go. Besides, it's rare for refs to call contact on the follow-through after an otherwise clean block.

Yeah, they could have called a foul on G's three point attempt (the one where he ended up on the floor) with 35 seconds left on the body contact after the release too. That was contact with no block.

Hi everyone, just wanted to leave my post-game thoughts as a (I think) rational Zags fan.

First of all, I'd like to point out that I am not a poster on our forum (I read them rarely, mostly just tournament time) so take that for what it's worth.

2nd: Congrats on the win and postseason run. I was very happy that the Zags reached the sweet 16 after the down season we had, and I would have been ecstatic to make the elite 8 and I imagine you guys are feeling much of the same after your down year.

On to the game: coming into this game I was honestly more worried about you guys beating us than us was 6 seed Seton Hall or 3 seed Utah. This is because our guards took forever to adjust to their roles and were extremely inconsistent early in the year - we saw flashes of brilliance followed by long stretches of ugly. They finally started playing confident the last month, but I had a strong feeling that your zone would frustrate them and cause them to revert to early-season form. It turns out that's exactly what happened, and they just looked confused and scared most of the night. Stretches of good play like early in the year, but a lot of ugly.

I've seen quite a few posts about Wiltjer and Sabonis playing out of their minds last night and would just like to point out that's not true - they both played well, but really just a bit above average for both of them. Your zone got to both of them as well though, and there were stretches where either of them looked pretty lost or frustrated as well. That was probably the least I've seen Wiltjer operate in the post all season (he is a truly great post scorer) and the least Sabonis has played on the perimeter/faced up in months. Part of that is the way Few designed his gameplan, but part of that is because you guys made them very uncomfortable out there. Props.

On to the refs - it seems like I'm the only person who thought the refs called a fair game. You can argue whether they did a good job (they swallowed a lot of whistles and really let them play) but it was evenly called on both sides. The only really bad call of the game was the out of bounds on Cooney - that was egregious he was clearly not out. That was truly awful but I loved it at the time. Anybody saying Lydon fouled Perkins at the end has absolutely no credibility, it wasn't anywhere near a foul.

Biggest head scratcher for us was McClellan being benched the whole second half. His play the last month has been outstanding and he was the defensive player of the year in our conference. He played poorly in the first half and beginning of the second but he should not have sat for 15 straight minutes to end the game. He was our 3rd best player this year and Few inexplicably cut his career short, which is too bad. Few has a reputation among Zag fans for putting guards in the doghouse if the get out of control.

In the end what it comes down to is that our players simply could not handle the zone. We had a week to prepare, shot the ball at a decent clip, played hard, rebounded well, and played good defense. But the zone confused us and forced turnovers. Boeheim and your players deserve all of the credit for making our offense stagnant for long stretches, making us take tough shots all night long, and holding us to nearly 20 points under our average. I was extremely impressed with Roberson's effort on the glass, that dude has a serious motor. Other than that, I can't say I was surprised by any players, the outcome, or the way either team looked. Oh by the way I love Lydon's game even though he was quiet last night.

I went into last night expecting that whoever won would get smoked by UVA Sunday night. Prove me wrong and go out there and take it to them! Good luck the rest of your season I'll be cheering for you (and I don't want another disappointing night)!

By the way - I'll be drinking tonight to the prayer that Sabonis will come back and Karnowski will come back after his season-ender early this year to give us another elite 8 shot next year!

Can we add a shout-out to Christian White for getting back up like a man after G put him on the floor! Can we get a GIF of that?

That was pretty funny.

If my memory is correct, we also lost to LeMoyne that year.
So you thought LeMoyne was 13 years ago... during the Bush/Cheney era? Really?
