Syracuse hiring Alex Kline as GM

I highly doubt it. Have you read up on the guy? He was an NBA scout and data guy for 8 years before coming here. Not a marketing guy.

This is at least the third time this article has been posted and posters keep debating what they *think his job is.

College is a lousy way to use those skills. Diamonds in the rough usually take time, and the system has taken away all incentives to develop talent.

Why would a prodigy leave the NBA for this?

I have no opinion on him, I just didn't see the fit at all because of the one year free agency and I'm all ears for what he is actually doing in recruiting and game strategy

Guilty! His skills seem more suited to the NBA where you can actually offer real contracts

Seems like his core skill is observational scouting. I’m all for someone bringing that skill to the program, since we’re clearly lacking in that ability when it comes to the portal. We struck out every which way possible last summer before he was hired.

I don’t know, man. You seem to be pretty dug in about his lack of value when you don’t read the things that explain what he’s actually up to.

Bingo. If he was a "basketball wunderkind" he wouldn't be coming to college to have little to no control and limited growth potential.

There are some behavioral psychology papers about this kind of thing.

I've read what he did in the nba

I have no opinion about him. Im talking about the role.

"Throughout the season, Kline has been in consistent contact with Autry and Syracuse’s coaching staff, updating them on his intel and bouncing ideas off them to see if there’s synergy between everyone"

I'm sure Kline can see the problems that we all see - obvious intuitive stuff that data would support. None of it is being addressed.

Finding players will are undervalued and will immediately help us here is a pipe dream. Finding undervalued players who would help us in two-three years who are locked in would be a great skill but college basketball eliminates that unfortunately

He literally explained that in the DO piece. He had zero control in the NBA. He was a well-regarded scout, but one of many. And just one of a ton of voices in the decision making process. He said at SU there are far fewer voices and he'll have a significant say.

Plus, his growth potential is clearly back in the NBA. Do well at SU and he can get a promotion to be an Assistant GM somewhere.

I'm leery of people declaring Kline to be some kind of savior. That's crazy talk IMHO. But it makes perfect sense why he's here, and what his role is. Well, it doesn't make sense if someone is willfully ignorant of the multiple explanations of that.

And you still think he's working on analytics for revenue and fundraising at SU?
I do. Sorry. Because they're not listening to him this year, clearly, and because his algorithmic projection skills are irrelevant when projections are pretty useless - there is no time, unfortunately

Who said he's finding "undervalued" players? Where is that written to be his biggest role?

OK boss.

I wish he had a say about what we see now but it's pretty clear he's doesn't because we take the dumbest shots with the wrong guys all the time

Why are you assuming his intel and ideas are about specific in-game strategies for this team?

He shouldn't have a GM title then. Call him the head scout.

And it's the fault of the DO & the PS, acting like he's some sort of savior as they start working on spinning year 3 of Red, and folks on here (not you) are eating it up.

Again, you're assuming things about his role that haven't been stated.

Come on, we've noted constantly that "GM" for college is not the same job as the pros. What difference does the title make? Call him Associate Vice President of Sparkly Unicorns for all I care.

What is the alternative?

Is he looking for overvalued players?
JFC. There will likely be 1,000 players or more in the portal in 6 weeks. We'll need 5 or 6 of them. I imagine he's looking for fit with who's returning/incoming from HS. And is gathering intel on what the NIL/compensation cost will be.

Why are you assuming his intel and ideas are about specific in-game strategies for this team?
Because it's ridiculous to have a wunderkind analytics genius who doesn't offer advice about the worst offensive strategies you can have

He's not helping autry with game strategy
He's not looking for under value players
And I'm stupid for thinking he must be working on other projects

Why don't you just tell me what he does then

Kline is also working to identify what players may enter the portal and building relationships with players ahead of time. He’s a relationship guy. He has been going back to HS. The thought here is he gives us a head start with some guys. I’m not advocating keeping Red, but hopefully this gets fans to understand who Kline is and what his strengths are.

This, along with what I literally posted 10 minutes ago...
