Texas A&M boosters paying $30M NIL

Regardless if the Texas A&M rumor is true or not, it's probably the direction we are headed.

Boosters will toss tens of millions of dollars right now for top coaches. However, people are saying recruiting is now 80% (to 90%) of what wins national championships (i.e. without a top 5 recruiting class you wont win the national championship). Someone is going to do the math and deem it a worthy "investment" to throw tens of millions of dollars, via NIL, to help recruiting.

The other issue is, yes, boosters have been giving money to players for decades. However, now this is above table and public, which will trigger an arms race at least for the interim as what happened with coaching salaries (especially this year).
I don't care how big of a booster you are, these guys don't have millions of dollars to literally throw away every season with no return on investment.

Millionaires don't become millionaires by giving away money.

The ROI is a national championship, or at least competing/progressing towards one (or at the very least, the hopes of competing for one), and I think a lot of boosters are willing to pony up the money because they are scared of falling behind

I think there is also a misconception of what a booster looks like. Yes, there are 1-2 whales at a school, but in reality, it's 10+ boosters who can throw a million dollars a two a year, followed by 100s others who can contribute $25k to $1M

They do when it comes to supporting old state U. if they don't win these are the guys that will buy Jimbo out if he doesn't win at the level that is expected. It's just another spot to throw cash. Also a tax deduction and also we are talking about dudes and families with big time wealth. Million bucks probably can be found in their couch cushions.

Look at LSU. Kelly will get 2-3 years if he doesn't win they will buy him out and start over again.

We're looking at potentially stupid money being put forward by unreasonable people over a passion that's on its face illogical. Nothing can possibly go wrong.

And these are at schools who are bringing in between $70M to $100M in ticket sales, parking, concessions, merchandise sales. Plus all the conference revenue. (and yes, certainly expenses involved in running a stadium).

These boosters just throw more millions on the pile and never ask where all the other money goes?

People here have complained (at times) that the parking and beer prices have impacted their decision to attend games.

Gift taxes are pretty hefty after you get past the annual exclusion

I
Clown post that shows you don’t understand this at all. For the 99th time they do more than just offer a class. For the 98th time, 30mil or 30 dollars, nothing can come from the school. Why don’t you gather your friends to come up with 30mil? Put your money where your mouth is.
Bees. Seriously. Wow, nice. What dont i understand?
As to contributing to the program i more than do my share.
But back to the 99th time why dont you explain SUs NIL strategy.

Football boosters are already supporting the school through annual donations. (And previously, Bagmen) Moving those donations to the EXACT player they want gives them more skin in the final product. I'd argue that being able to "legally" target the right player incentivises them MORE to increase their donations, and make sure it all goes to the player. Best way to get the Glory they desire.

If the team is better? The school still gets more $$ through increased sales, merch etc... Win win.

This all makes me sad.

Not for the players, but for the adults.

This is correct and is an outcome based on lack of control at the top. There is no steering entity capable of dealing with where a segment of schools (or boosters of those schools) want it to go.

Sinister? No. In fact, daylight prob helps. Good for the sport nationally? No. Good for the unpaid labor force that has helped grow the sport into what it is Probably. Good for the pocketbooks of coaches and administrators? Undoubtedly, always.
Because relying on a central governing agency has worked so well for SU in the past

There is an old expression that college sports is about the name on the front of the jersey and pro sports is about the name on the back.

I think this moves us away from that. Too bad.

The university presidents and trustees brought us here by pimping out the names on the backs of the jerseys for their own enrichment.

I agree that this isn't a net improvement for the game.

It's different, but are lessons to be learned with how Tampa has managed their situation.
It's not even comparable, they signed Tom Brady, drafted a few really good players, then kept good Free Agents, nothing SU can think about doing.

That'll help us compete with the SEC...Any more ideas?
Those were like in house farm teams. Do you have any ideas of how to address this situation? Baseball with its very uneven revenue among teams is at least a place to look for some answers.

I'm referring to the Tampa Bay Rays baseball club.

NIL deals are not permitted to be contingent on a player's on field performance.
Yeah, well, we'll see how that really works. There are ways of tying it to performance without really tying it to performance.

I'm not sure how the NCAA will regulate that short of creating a pseudo-federal government.

Just because the NCAA sucks doesn’t mean all central governing agencies suck. The NFL empowers their commissioner to actually do things when teams cheat (not just the small market teams). Not perfect, but an attempt.

This is what I mean when I say that this is a very serious problem for Syracuse. I am not sure we will survive it. The SEC is going to take over.

I don't think it changes the kids we get. Who did we get from A+M before this?

If anything the next rung of athletes will now be much better on the field because they didn't pocket 1 million the minute they stepped on a college campus as 17/18 year olds.

When BC and Wake fans pay their incoming players 30 mil/year I'll worry.

Top recruits can bust. See Benny Williams I don't care if he was ranked 50 I'd rather have the guy ranked 500 hes possibly the worst hyped recruit we have ever gotten.

Still a buzzkill.

I’ve said this before and will say it again, let’s just focus on our own conference. I watch all the big games, but I’m not gonna sweat what happens outside of the ACC.

No silly, we have to recruit the kind of people that will stay and develop for 5 years. That's our farm system.
That is being severely tested right now. We'll know more after the Covid class graduates.

You have to recruit guys who want to come to Syracuse for a degree or even 2 degrees in a 3-2 program. Developmental players that could make up the core of the program. Look how many of these FCS lineman are getting huge offers all over the place. And skill players too.
