Texas Postgame

Bell is who he always was, a sometimes shooter, but a bad basketball player.
The bad part is he has the athletic ability to be good. It's to bad his coaches throughout his life let him get away with not being a complete player.
He did have a couple of blocks, I guess that's two good things he did.

Help if he made more fts, tho.

Yeah, he seemed to get the range down on the last couple I think - but I thought they were all going to be short.

Our whole team needs some work in that department. :( A lot of work.

Red had the team ready to play and for that I will give him credit. Had a couple of nice plays out of timeouts and I loved that we switched up D throughout the game.

But for everything that he did well, he failed the team with player rotations and some late-game decisions...

-Bell lost the game but Red shouldn't have put him in that position. When Davis came in for Freeman if Red left Freeman on the floor and pulled Bell we would have won the game by double digits. Bell was a killer for this team and for him to play the entire second half is a massive coaching mistake.
-Carlos should never be in the game late in the 4th he just isn't a P4 player period. I feel bad for him he shouldn't be playing at this level. He is on the team but Red doesn't have to compound the mistake by playing him so much and playing in him crunch time.
-Late in the second half maybe under 2 minutes he took Taylor off of Johnson and put JJ on him. This was a killer as Johnson worked over JJ pretty good down the stretch even though Taylor had him locked up pretty much all the second half.

Autry seems like he learned all of the bad things JB believed. Still waiting for the good things to show up.

1. Do not under any circumstances alter the starting lineup. It doesn’t matter if a player stinks, if they started the season they must start unless they have a season ending injury.
2. Seniors are always better than freshman, unless their name is Anthony. It’s just science so don’t even try to play them.
2. Never ever ever substitute at all in the 2nd half. These kids are young, it’s impossible for them to get tired.
3. Free throws schmree throws. There’s no way they will ever cost you a game (or a national championship).
4. At press conferences, yell at and belittle anyone who will take it. That will show them you’re serious!

red is really bad at deciding who to play throughout the game...which renders the greater depth this year not so beneficial

that game was there for the taking with better lineups and substitution patterns

red will figure it out later in the year...but he shouldnt really need months worth of games to know who to play and who to bench

he think he needs carlos and bell for th whole year and doesnt wanna damage their egos or whatever...its just dumb
He might not figure it out. He didn't coach a good game.
JB wins this game

3 hours ago many thought this team might struggle to win 10 games. We didn't know if we could compete with the mediocre (bubble teams). So the fact they competed in the 2nd half and there were positives, give some glimmer of hope for the season.
Yes, we are certainly better than I thought coming into tonight. What kills us is we lack a PG. It is tough to win games against good teams when you don’t have a point guard. My point is, I think the floor was raised for the season based on what I saw tonight but I’m not sold that this was some turning point.

I just feel like we regurgitate the same excuses every year since 2017. Missed free throws, giving up 2nd chance pts, late game turnovers. We gotta start winning these games against other P4 teams. Bells play gives me severe brain damage... Lampkin, Starling, and Davis all played great but seriously have been sick of the moral victories.

I feel like for a guy who’s played in college

What makes you think he had the team ready? We came out ice cold and looked completely unprepared
I second this. I don’t see how you can say Red had the team ready to play. We were awful in the first 4 mins of each half. We spotted them 9 points right out of the gate because we had no intensity or effort. Than in the second half we came out the same way, we’re down 11 with the ball and 1 min later we’re down 16 and haven’t even gotten a shot up.

We will know more over the next 4 games. I do think running Starling at point might be their best option.

You cannot have a quality player like Donnie never see the floor in the second half. At least let him sub for Bell a few times. Even if he doesn't do a lot, he's doing as much as Bell.

Sit Bell and put Donnie in. Put Bell on the floor when you are desperate for a 3pt shot.
When you see Carmelo across the floor and realize this program has the closest thing to a caliber of player that he is in 20 years. You’re going to have to sacrifice your other forwards playing time for the good of the team. You got to let him take control of the game.

Carlos reminds me of a player youd see for some mid major during championship week that plays great against South Central Carolina St and they win their conference tourny and make the tournament, then a week later you see that same team against North Carolina and the player looks like a 10 year old playing against high school kids.

I'm really pissed off that we lost that game, but I will say it does feel good that we went toe to toe with a good team after the abysmal first three games. In the first half it felt like Texas would end up winning by 25 points.

It's very important that we win tomorrow. I know its a "consolation game" but it's simply the next regular season game. 1-1 in Brooklyn and we're OK.

We have to stop starting games just jacking up threes. It seems to take us half a game before we start posting Lampkin up inside. By playing through Lampkin, the game will tell you what to do. We play like chickens with our heads cut off starting games. Go inside to both Freeman and Lampkin. The game will be easy if you do.

Something ain't right with him. He has a lot of tools & all the opportunities, but the effort isn't there. Just needs to give a lot more effort & I think things would go much better for him.
And we have a winner. Bell and Benny are in my opinion two kids who need to be coached hard. Not coddled. It's actually simple. Bell is in the game to make threes. Period. He is in the game to make shots. He is marginal at every other aspect of basketball. If he is hot he plays. If not he sits. Play him the first 5 to 10 minutes of each half and... make shots play. Miss shots sit. Because if he isn't shooting well there are 3 other kids who do everything else better.
