Texas Postgame

Bell better be white hot tomorrow since he took it easy today while the rest of his teammates were going all out.

Will be really interesting if Lampkin has anything left in the tank tomorrow.

Next shoot around should be all free throws

Really wish we had a point guard.

If they win tomorrow, it’ll take the sting out of this one.

Re #2, I thought Davis would struggle mightily against higher level opponents. It was really great to see him have a game like that tonight - it seems I may have been mistaken.
I sent a note to the group I’m close with her in a message that after my first attended practice that he was the best player on the team. He will take off even more after this I think

I am not sure I can overstate how infuriating it was to watch Bell give up that offensive board by just standing there when we had the chance to have the ball up 1. He does it ALL THE TIME too, I can deal with the poor shooting nights, and the bad passes (sometimes) but my god put a body on someone when you have all the momentum going for you.

He might not figure it out. He didn't coach a good game.
JB wins this game
Just stop it!!!! JB isn't coaching anymore! His last two years were not so great. Poor foul shooting lost this game not Red's coaching ability. Our foul shooting is horrible . The team clawed it's way back and made it a game. Again, in tight games, foul shots make the difference. For me, that is the take away. How does a kid shoot 80% from the line last year, transfer to Syracuse and now he shoots 50% from the line? This same kid made 1/2 at the line in the last minutes of the game! I watched the SU women play last night. Albany had a girl who shot 48% as a freshman from the free throw line...now, as a Sr, she is shooting 90%....48%- 90%!!!! YOU can improve at the line...but it takes discipline and practice and I don't think we are putting in the work to improve our free throw shooting percentage as a team.

Red had the team ready to play and for that I will give him credit. Had a couple of nice plays out of timeouts and I loved that we switched up D throughout the game.

But for everything that he did well, he failed the team with player rotations and some late-game decisions...

-Bell lost the game but Red shouldn't have put him in that position. When Davis came in for Freeman if Red left Freeman on the floor and pulled Bell we would have won the game by double digits. Bell was a killer for this team and for him to play the entire second half is a massive coaching mistake.
-Carlos should never be in the game late in the 4th he just isn't a P4 player period. I feel bad for him he shouldn't be playing at this level. He is on the team but Red doesn't have to compound the mistake by playing him so much and playing in him crunch time.
-Late in the second half maybe under 2 minutes he took Taylor off of Johnson and put JJ on him. This was a killer as Johnson worked over JJ pretty good down the stretch even though Taylor had him locked up pretty much all the second half.
Great post. I have no idea what Red was thinking. Freeman in Bell out. Carlos out Taylor in we win.
Taylor
JJ
Freeman
Davis
Lampkin
We win.

I'm really pissed off that we lost that game, but I will say it does feel good that we went toe to toe with a good team after the abysmal first three games. In the first half it felt like Texas would end up winning by 25 points.

It's very important that we win tomorrow. I know its a "consolation game" but it's simply the next regular season game. 1-1 in Brooklyn and we're OK.
I agree with you on all of this. Was expecting us to get trounced but watching the second half I realized it was a game we should win. I liked the effort of everyone not named Chris bell and thought if he didn’t play we would have won fairly easily. Good news is it seems we aren’t as bad as we thought, bad news is we have a gaping hole at PG, SF and a medium sized hole at head coach.

Still though, we win tomorrow night and go 1-1 and it’s not a bad trip to Brooklyn overall. Hopefully we improve off this game and it’s a bit of a wake up call for certain people.

Finally got to finish watching it. Really thought we were going to pull it out.

Last season, Bell made some clutch shots to lock in some of our wins late.

This game... oof. Just a veritable cornucopia of terrible plays. The bad lob to Lampkin. Touching a ball going out of bounds for absolutely zero reason. Guarding that Weaver dude that's super active and not even thinking about putting a body on him when the shots go up. Whatever happened on that pass out of bounds.

We need to get him and Carlos a good sports psychologist. They're a mess.

Hey. I wanted Jim out 10 years ago. Red completely screwed up this game. No way Carlos and Bell should have been on the floor.
Not sure how he coaches but in practice foul shooting needs to be risk reward.
Make shots practice over. Miss shots run suicides.

And we have a winner. Bell and Benny are in my opinion two kids who need to be coached hard. Not coddled. It's actually simple. Bell is in the game to make threes. Period. He is in the game to make shots. He is marginal at every other aspect of basketball. If he is hot he plays. If not he sits. Play him the first 5 to 10 minutes of each half and... make shots play. Miss shots sit. Because if he isn't shooting well there are 3 other kids who do everything else better.
It’s time to stop worrying about Bell’s ego. Either toughen up and play or sit. His two missed rebounds cost us four points. His terrible pass over Eddies head was modified level. Not executing on the out of bounds play, baffling! Two terrible threes, one which we had a chance to take the lead. Too many mistakes for a junior. We were rolling and then stopped getting the ball inside to Lampkin. Players have to be smarter and understand where his team’s advantage is. Too many wasted trips with the wrong player taking shots. Davis gets it. He knows how to play and just goes and gets the ball. Tonight was JJ’s best game playing both ends of the floor. Carlos has to figure out the offensive end of the floor. He drew a big offensive foul late and he can put pressure on the ball.

The great Rick Pitino just blew a 18 point second half lead and lost in double overtime with Jeremy Roach hitting a buzzer beating three.

If Autry can figure out a way to design our offense entirely through Lampkin and Freeman, and work inside > outside, I think this team has the potential to scratch and claw it's way to the bubble. But if it's just nonsense iso ball with unnecessary dribbling like most of the first half, we will go .500 at best.

I’m very anxious to see what happens Tomm….
Same. I think if we come out and get a W than it’s fairly positive. Will prob still have a sour taste in our mouth from this Texas game but even though we lost it seems like we might be starting to figure a few things out and hopefully build off of it for the rest of the season going forward.

Autry seems like he learned all of the bad things JB believed. Still waiting for the good things to show up.

1. Do not under any circumstances alter the starting lineup. It doesn’t matter if a player stinks, if they started the season they must start unless they have a season ending injury.
2. Seniors are always better than freshman, unless their name is Anthony. It’s just science so don’t even try to play them.
2. Never ever ever substitute at all in the 2nd half. These kids are young, it’s impossible for them to get tired.
3. Free throws schmree throws. There’s no way they will ever cost you a game (or a national championship).
4. At press conferences, yell at and belittle anyone who will take it. That will show them you’re serious!
All of this Monday Morning Quarterbacking concerning substitutions is hilarious! We are all entitled to our opinions, but Red is the only one of us getting paid to Coach the Orange! Having said that, we lost this game because of our inability to make free throws. You can argue all day about who should and should not be playing...but what is clear is that if the people who did play, make a few more free throws, we win this game...if we made 65%...we win!

Is Petar a pure shooter? I feel like I don't know much about him to be perfectly honest. Players whose last names end in "ovic" generally are, but I don't want to make assumptions.

It's not that he's not doing much, he's doing poorly at everything. Can't pass, can't defend, can't rebound and his mistakes cause other players to get fouled, turn the ball over or just kill momentum. This isn't about hitting shots, because when he does they still don't matter because of everything else. When he's not hitting them, we're playing in spite of him.
I think freeman has to play over him so Davis can also play. That’s the reality. Freeman gives you more. They need to rotate those three for two spots. Freeman can at least post up and also can hit the 3. We need that inside out game. Bell just is a black box.
