Texas Postgame

Just stop it!!!! JB isn't coaching anymore! His last two years were not so great. Poor foul shooting lost this game not Red's coaching ability. Our foul shooting is horrible . The team clawed it's way back and made it a game. Again, in tight games, foul shots make the difference. For me, that is the take away. How does a kid shoot 80% from the line last year, transfer to Syracuse and now he shoots 50% from the line? This same kid made 1/2 at the line in the last minutes of the game! I watched the SU women play last night. Albany had a girl who shot 48% as a freshman from the free throw line...now, as a Sr, she is shooting 90%...48%- 90%!!!! YOU can improve at the line...but it takes discipline and practice and I don't think we are putting in the work to improve our free throw shooting percentage as a team.
You say it’s not Red’s fault, but then say we aren’t putting in the work to improve.Ok which one is i?

Free throw shooting was definitely an issue but to say that’s the only reason we lost this game is absurd. We lost IMO because of the below in that order.

1. Chris bell
2. Reds coaching substitutions/coming out flat in both half’s
3. free throws
4. Carlos
We blame the Coach too much here. I am not a fan of Bell or Carlos, but both were on the floor when we made our comeback, that is a fact. Both failed to make plays down the stretch that hurt us, that is a fact. Multiple players contributed to the poor free throw shooting percentage and that was the biggest difference in the game. I used to coach girl's high school basketball and one of my staff members did a research project once to determine what statistic could be most reliable in predicting a win. What he found ,with no other stat even close , was turnovers. the team that turns the ball over the most, will lose more often than win. The next best predictor was free throws, first was the number of free throws shot per game and the percentage made. Look at the box scores of 10 games this week...look at turnovers and free throws versus who won the game...and report back on your findings...LOL...

I loved having Melo there and back invested in the program.
Him and Kiyan were very engaged and discussing plays after they happened, loved seeing the knowledge share.

As soon as we sat in our seats I said, as others have mentioned, we have to hit ft’s to be able to win. I also asked why Freeman was sitting, and was really impressed with JJ’s defense.

Spoke to a family member of one of our players after. He said we were putting too much pressure on JJ, and went away from screens late. I said yeah and Chris didn’t help at all, and I’m going to drink myself to sleep.

Oh well, gotta get ready for tomorrow

At Barclays, I noticed that During the timeout I think after the non box out, Red got in to Bell’s face. And yanked him from the game for maybe 1 possession. After Red was done yelling, Davis (may have been Taylor but pretty sure it was Davis), and gave Bell a hug because it looked like Bell was about to start crying.

But overall I agree with the sentiment that Red seems to have inherited some of JB’s worst habits.

Freeman has to play more. It looked like he was just getting rolling and then never seen again. Once our comeback flattened out, he should have been back in.

Fans got really into it the second half. Our fan base is so loyal we really deserve better. Even though I Commented to my friend how far we have fallen playing in a game in NYC and they have to close the upper deck for lack of ticket sales.
Freeman has to get better defensively if he wants to play down the stretch. You noticed our defense was much better in the second half and Freeman wasn’t playing. He still takes too many jumpers instead of getting to the rim. Right at this moment, Davis is more predictable than Freeman. That’s why Taylor plays. You know what he’s going to do and he plays within himself. You can say the same thing about Davis. Red did a great job tonight keeping his team together. He can’t control how some players decide to play. After Bell gave up the second offensive put back, Red ripped him a new one and sat him down. You can’t just give up on guys after four games.

I was at the game behind our bench. Donnie had two fingers taped together in his right hand in the second half. Eddie was hurting the whole game but was a warrior. Bell was terrible and needed emotional support. Free throws lost the game.

Despite all that, I left feeling a lot more hopeful than after our wins.

Carlos was an 89% foul shooter last year, Davis 81%. That’s why they were there.

Did they drink from the fountain of Herman Harried when they got to Cuse?
Free throw shooting is mostly about a solid and consistent routine. Great free throw shooters have a specific routine. They can all be very different but each individual needs to follow " their " routine.
Put each kid who plays in Foul shot scenarios and film them.
During scrimmages.
At the start of or end of practice. After conditioning drills. With pressure like sprints or no sprints...
Bottom line I would get they shoot lots of foul shots in practice with very little structure.

You think our defense would've been worse if Freeman came in for Bell? That's a hot take.

Nobody is talking about taking Davis out. It's Bell that sits when Donnie plays. As far as his defense, he will play as well as Bell and maybe better.

Nobody is talking about giving up on Bell. Just sitting him when he's not shooting. Bell has to give you at least 10 points because he's going to give the other team almost as many on defense.

I’m glad they finally played with some life for the first time this season.

The team is clearly Starling and Lampkin, with a few other guys contributing.

Carlos needs to be a rotation guy, not a starter. 15 minutes.

Bell shouldn’t be getting 30+ minutes unless he comes out blazing from 3. He’s a net negative when he’s not shooting well.
Someone mentioned earlier, it's the start of an identity. Build from that.

Carlos was not on the floor during our comeback, Taylor was. Carlos came back in under 2 mins and turned the ball over on a huge out of bands play, lost his man on a switch which led to two points and missed a huge free throw which would have cut it to a one point game with 10 seconds left. Out of our 10 turnovers bell and Carlos had 40% of them. And if your acknowledging how awful Bell was than your acknowledging that despite this he played the whole second half while being awful while freeman who was playing his best game of his Syracuse career sat for the last 16 mins…LOL

Carlos threw it out of bounds because Bell stopped running.

I hate to say it, but a zebra doesn’t change its stripes. Bell hasn’t proved to consistently do the little things that help win games over his first two seasons…crazy to think that he’s all of a sudden going to start doing them because he’s a junior. He is who he is. Great shooter (he’ll get it going this year, it’s only a matter of time), expanding game off the dribble. A nice piece on offense who can get really hot. Sliding his feet better on D this year (still not great but you can say that for everyone on this squad). But he’s never going to put a body on someone to fight for a tough rebound. Not going to take a charge, or attack for a 50/50 ball like his life depends on it. Good for Autry to light into him tonight, but we have enough evidence showing it’s not going to change. Again, he is who he is.

I get what you’re saying, but another problem with three bigs is our transition defense, which was its best tonight. I’m still hoping that Chance might be our final piece of the puzzle.

Autry getting into him tonight is good. But you want to get through to a player….put him on the bench don’t keep playing him one mistake after another. Bob Knight said in one of his books “the best teacher is butt on wood”

"Red completely screwed up the game"...is a distorted view of the facts. I am not a big fan of either Bell, or Carlos...but who do we have that is better? You can argue Freeman should or could have played more...but the fact that he didn't doesn't make Coach Red an idiot. The guys who played, played hard enough and well enough to come back from a 16 point deficit!!!!! The little things cost this team a victory and it had nothing to do with Coach Red! The players missed foul shot that had they made, they win. Bell takes an ill advised 3 point shot, Carlos goes 1/2 from the foul line when 2/2 makes it a 2 point game, and Carlos has a key turnover on the last out of bounds play!
Sorry who recruited Carlos?

How about Naheem playing with aggression early on. Being a few rows up, he looked light on his feet and played quality minutes IMO. Same with Taylor on their lotto pick. Kid plays hard. The three point shooting was frustrating and more-so the shot selection. Bell absolutely has zero handle especially when getting in the lane, it's almost an automatic turnover. Lots of positives to take from the game, but we really gave that one away...

We’re now 22 for 88 from three.

I don’t know what’s worse, that we’re shooting so terribly or that we’re taking 22 threes a game.

We need to work the O inside-out. Chucking 3s is such a loser for us.
And Chris Bell is 6 for 24 from three for the season. No better or worse than the rest of the team. If he isn't above average at the one thing he is supposed to be good at and is terrible at everything else.....

Went to the game. I’ve been bearish on the team. Here is what I’ll say.

Lampkin is playing injured. Leg and back. He’s awesome but playing thru injury. But no one ever tell me he’s in shape. But I do love him. But he’s injured and not in shape.

Red is not a good coach as of now. Dont want to hear it.

Bell and Carlos have to sit.

All credit to the team. Being there was awesome. It really was.

Donnie should demand he’s in at the end of games.

I dunno. This year is going to be tough. And there is no Judah to blame.

They have to really scrutinize what’s going on. There is no solution right now.

1. Texas stinks
2. Cuse looks like tight scared, pansies to start games, no alpha.
3. Red’s a good dude, and seemingly vg recruiter, but have no identity on offense, JJ goes off for 38 penetration points last game and nada in 1st half.
4. Watched a no movement offense towards end of first half and just knew Carlos was gonna chuck a 30 ft 3 that missed everything, no alpha, questionable coaching.
5. The Carlos experiment needs to end, can’t believe Red inserted him after sitting for 10 plus minutes, his confidence is shot.
6. With the Melo/ Kiyan aura, NYC bright lights, we’re this close, Red’s on court coaching TBD.
