The all-inclusive Rutgers dumpster fire thread...

You hit on the point. “They can spin it any way they want”. Can’t do that if you’re not in it. This isn’t money (or not primarily). This is to show program progress to donors, to the Chancellor, to the students, to the recruits. This is for them to say “We are a program on the rise” and “we wouldn’t have been here without our dedication to academics” which plays well with recruit’s families and the teachers who complain about money being funneled to the AD.
What they do is on them. IMO, this is is a low-grade maneuver that doesn’t serve them well. Despite the slavish attention some in our fanbase bestow upon them, Rutgers is considered a joke by most every CFB fanbase. No one “aspires” to be like Rutgers. For some sick reason there is however a contingent of SU fans who love to talk about them, hence this multi post thread that dominates the board. Believe me, whatever spin they put on it will not matter. Win or lose, they’ll still be Rutgers. Period.

I think that comes from a lot of SU students/alum are from Jersey so of course RU will be on their radar. An ex of mine went to RU and I have lots of friends from there. You ever go to the Catskills? Locals are always complaining about people from Jersey. Locals in Jersey complain about peeps from NYC and Philly. There is a lot of crossover

Exactly! I complain that a vast majority of the “Jersey Shore” cast isn’t from NJ, and in fact is from NY, including Snooki. I complain that most of the traffic problems and road rage episodes I experience are caused by drivers with NY license plates. I’m not sure what that has to do with any of this, nor do I understand it when those on this site besmirch NJ, full of SU alumni, donors and fans.

We directly compete with RU for recruits. If they are changing perceptions, that directly affects us. This is not about them being seen as on the level with Ohio State or Clemson, it’s about them being seen as better than us. DoctorBombay nobody aspires to be like us either these days.

What perception do they have they went 2 and 7 in the b10. And got outscored like 260 to 130.

Exactly. So instead of being fixated on the machinations going on at NJSU, maybe we should worry about getting our own house in order first.
And honestly, Rutgers football, despite the blip on the screen these last few years and our worst period in our history, isn’t in the same space as SU football. They have NO history other than a Friday night game vs Louisville. We elevate them when we constantly pay attention to them, and it reveals the depth of insecurity among our fanbase to do so.
We need to worry about ourselves- we have lots of work to do. Instead some in our fanbase can’t help perpetually knob-slobbing the Rutgers football program. Baffling. JMHO

Our AD and football leaders have lots to do. How does that mean the fans, who can do little other than buy or not buy tickets, or donate for better facilities or leaders should not have an opinion about other programs? Perhaps it suggests there is something we can learn from them, about what we want or don’t want to do? If the last 20 years should have taught us by now, our history doesn’t matter unless we maintain it. We’ve failed to do that. We have no history.

I am unsure about our future. I want every advantage we can get. Would a bowl game give us an advantage? I think so. The attention you claim we give them, is now being given on a national level. No such thing as bad publicity.

I get why it may be a bad idea. I don’t disagree with those reasons. I’m glad to an extent it’s not a decision we need to make because I am not sure what the best play is. Right now we look insecure about our ability to win after a bye week, or extended layoff.

The should be celebrating going to a bowl game but instead they are worried about our thoughts lol

We elevate Rutgers to who? The posters on this board or the 5 Rutgers fans that visit once in a while.

I feel like it’s the opposite of insecurity. It’s like if you have an ex from 10 years ago that goes to a certain bar and if you’re still hung up and can’t ever go there or talk about her/him. If you literally don’t care at all you can go to bar say hi and and chat a little once in while and not think twice about it.

No one is comparing history. Their big game wasn’t even on a Friday night but a Thursday lol. Marrone got us to a point of respectability but we just haven’t been too good the last 20 years. Army football was once a powerhouse too so what?

We share a state border with lots of crossover. Plus they’re fun to laugh at lol

Fair enough. They can spin it any way they want. Sometimes it’s about more than that. They are risking their players health in a low upside move that’s likely to backfire. That coach and program are beyond shame at this point, but integrity still stands for something.
I’m just glad, and i would hope in similar circumstances, we’d say no regardless. JMHO
no one spins more that we do----it never ceases to amaze how much fun we make of them , but they out recruit us(almost everyone does) they beat us etc etc . can we please get our own act together????
bring back marrone---but that is another story.

BCS era

Syracuse since 1998:
125-165-0
Ranked in five years (98,99,01,18,19)
Highest ranking: 11th
Winning seasons: 7/24, 2 .500 seasons

Rutgers since 1998:
121-167-0
Ranked in four years (06,07,09,12)
Highest Ranking: 7th
Winning seasons : 8/24, 0 .500 seasons

We can talk history all we want.

Reality is last 24-25 years, BCS modern era, our programs are mirror images.

So mock away.

Edit

1970-1986. The era before our glory years (87-97). The end of Ben through Sac Mac peak.

Syracuse
80-106-2
Ranked once - 13th in 1971
7/17 seasons were winning seasons with one season at 5-5-1

Rutgers
108-75-3
11-0 in 1976 and ranked 17th
10/17 seasons were winning seasons. One season 5-5 and one 5-5-1

So yeah they were an absolute dreg of a program. A complete mess from 87-97. They held onto Graber and Shea way too long.

They had their GRob years during our best years.

But if you want history, then here you go. They were better than us from 1970 - 1986.

Yes, because history doesn’t mean isht. Got it.

No recruit today cares about what happened more than 25 years ago. It has no relevance on them today.

The average fan 25 years ago is long gone from Syracuse or much older.

I don't think you're thinking logically on this. 25 years man. 25 years of bleh. That's closing in on two generations. Young adults having families now that were Syracuse fans, haven't experienced sustained success. The program hasn't had sustained success since I graduated High School in 2001. My kids are going to be in high school in a couple years, and they have had one winning season in their memory.

No. No it does not.
Horrible and desperate look for them. Putting players health in jeopardy for the almighty dollar is not a good thing.
And for all the ROSUF (Rutgers-obsessed-SU-fans), here’s reason #2738 why we should never measure ourselves against that program. JMHO
“ROSUF” lol

I don’t think some people really get this. I’ve been saying for years and years now, we have generations of fans we’ve lost or a generation or two there was never a shot with. SU is barely relevant beyond this board. The fact we can even get 20k-30k at the dome sometimes is incredible. I have zero friends or family left that ask, talk, or even mention anything SU related. It’s beyond even caring that we keep having losing seasons, nobody I know even cares about that. Complete apathy.

RU had so many better recruiting classes though

We're not talking about only recruiting. A programs history comtributes to its relevance. I agree that the longer a program stays down, the less it matters, but when comparing SU to Rutgers, only using the last 25 years is arbitrary and doesn't make sense.

makes perfect sense people have short memories. i am 72y/o. i have been attending games since 1960. travelled from nj and now from pa. i and many others have seen it all. su administration has been responsible for most of the issues. many of us can give a good accounting of that history including the demise of ben and pasqualoni.
the administration remains a issue both in sports and professional academics. quite frankly, at this point i would rather see su improve the law school and develop a first class research reputation . forget about a med school kent was blowing smoke.
i don't care what ru does. they have infinite amounts of money thanks to the taxpayers in nj , of which i was from 1973 to 2012. nj does have the third best school system. .
all of that said, i have less interest in attending games and admit, that go because that is something that i share with my son and grandchildren.
