The supposed retirement plan

So more of a double secret probation type of plan?

This might get "interesting" and to be honest, I wish it didn't come down a national basting of JAB, I really don't like the direction this might go especially if he was going to leave quietly. I agree it's time for him to leave and wish he let us know his plans but understand why he didn't because of the attention. Sadly and ironically...he's getting it anyways.

I think the tipping point will be if Sean Mc Donagh or Bilas say something doing a game. But Sean doesn’t do much college BB anymore with his NHL responsibilities. Or if Sean or Jay tell him something privately. Heck, Sean sat with Julie and Jamie at the ACCT last year. I wonder if he'd call it quits if Coach K advised him to do so privately.
Thought the same thing about McDonnough. Agree. Would be interesting to hear what he would say if he did one of our games.

I want to clarify. There was never a plan that had a set time and a designated replacement. However, the athletic Director has a plan of attack and what to do when JB steps down.

There isn’t an assistant on the staff that feels they are definitely getting the job. At least, that was the case over the summer.

I think Wildhack is leaving his options open, and the more this gets off the rails this year. The more options he’s going to need.

I believe there are two different factions among the board of trustees. One that thinks, JB should be allowed to handpick his successor, and the other who think we need a full-blown national search. I think the latter group is growing in numbers.

Jake blink twice if someone is watching you while typing that post...

Thanks for the info, truly. Not that my opinion matters in the least, but I'm glad that the national search is gaining momentum.

A national search doesn't preclude a current assistant from throwing his hat in the ring... just means the pool of candidates will be as expansive as needed.

I don't understand how a university, in this day and age, could NOT conduct a genuine, national search for their highest-paid position. I mean, would they tolerate any different process than that to fill a school President or department chair position?

FWIW, this version is closer to my understanding based on the little that gets shared, with me anyway. Personally, this would signal a clear lack of leadership and competency if contingency plans have not been developed and vetted, even if there is no clear consensus yet.

I think the framing that there is a split amongst the BoT is really telling of how complicated this situation is. Especially for all the guff JW has taken on this specific JB unicorn issue. Thanks for sharing the nuggets Jake/007.

Well, that would be...not smart.

I could see JB retiring late in the offseason, so we're stuck hiring one of his assistants
I could see that too. I hope it doesn’t go down that way.

Whatever happens, I just want this team to get better and win some games. Their defense for 25-30 minutes against Illinois was the most active we’ve seen in several years. We have some good pieces and several role players. Our coaches just need to coach them up and put them in situations to be successful.

We can't rebound.

This seems like the most likely scenario to me if he has any say in the way he goes out. Like, 3 days before the first game of the 202X-202Y season.

Wouldn’t shock me…JB might be obliviousto the fact that would destroy almost all the goodwill he’s built up over five decades, and that it would be pointless because whoever was HC would be a lame duck from the start and a national search would start the day after he stepped down anyway.

In some respects I’d love Jimmy to take part in the search for his replacement. But boy, could those interviews be awkward should the candidate want to speak openly about how he views the state of the program and what it will take to get it back to where it belongs.

If Jim takes part in the search, it will start and end within 20 feet from where he sits when he’s in the dome. This is 100% known.

Appreciate all the info, always.

The bolded part... I hope people realize how absolutely insane that is. Some don't, which makes it even MORE insane.

Did you see how bad Duke bungled theirs?
