mid 4th quarter. Hunt takes a facemask and we get 3 and 10.. maryland plays 3 deep, rushes 3, man on everyone and safeties over the top

the play develops Hunt has time and no one to throw to and finally runs. with no real pressure. the outside WR had a huge cushion but runs into coverage and hunt pulls it down. we made it too easy. the 2 inside WR just turned at 5 yds. not one route across the face of the DBs. only one route far enough to be a first down. nothing deep to create a hole. if Hunt looks hard left the DB would have had to honor Lewis and the deep corner pass would have been wide open, instead the WR runs into coverage. still with no rush and 8 in coverage the run is probably not the best option .

if west runs the corner he is wide open.. if west and Lewis run a double slant the safety would have had to honor Lewis and West would have had all day to run a deep cross..

Play design needs to get better. 5 wr in patten and all run dull, slow routes and 8 man coverage.

Cant say I disagree, we have 3 of 5 players running 5 yard routes when we need 10 and cornerbacks are clearly playing off not allowing the big play over the top.

i've also seen a number of times where 2 receivers finish routes within a few feet of each other. just clogs everything up and makes it easier to defend. i dont understand the design of the routes in general and this is a great frame.

what are the offensive coaches doing when they sit in the film room and critique the above sequence? How could they blame anybody but the call/design. 3 of the 5 guys out in the pattern are sitting 5 yards or less.

One guy sitting in the middle of the field might cause a safety to hesitate opening up something beyond the 1st down marker, but this looks like no one is running anything to create confusion in the zone. Yikes.

Just to play devils's advocate - why do we think the all Receivers ran the correct routes?

Great critique - not sure if it holds water but it is a good thought. I wonder whether Ishmael hit the field so quickly b/c he is a great route runner.

Running routes seems easy to me but I am sitting on my butt, everything is easier from there.

I am pretty sure Ishmael has good hands but I don't know about route running. You would think a frosh would have to run pretty good routes to get on the field though.

My understanding is that good route runners run very precise consistent routes and are good a shaking press coverage as well. Finding the seams in zones and sitting down at the correct time seems to be an art form. Sales was particularly good at it and it look like Ishamel may be also.

Let's hope so.

Being a great route runner doesn't mean he knows all of the plays or is always running the correct routes. Not a shot at Ishmael just that in general our guys look like theyre having to think too much vs simply running memorized plays.

I try to explain to my kid when I watch his team play. How you get from A to B is just as important as getting there. if you make a DB turn his hips you are going to create separation , if you just run big circle routes all these dbs are fast enough to cover you. if you cant threaten a DB you cant create a throwing window. I think our play design is lacking or our route precision is poor, who knows which. Too many plays have people too close to each other . you can run close routes but the timing has to be much better. only the coaches would know if its by design and I dont hear those questions being asked.

Watching on TV is so limiting compared to being at the game. It is so neat to watch the receivers run their routes and the lineman setting their blocks. It would be nice to see the WR's do some good timely blocking as well but I think I will have to wait for that.

Going to two games in 6 days - doesn't get any better in college football.

I love the one where the RB or Hback jogs towards the sideline at a backwards angle and then stands there as the play is run.

What's with essentially playing one man short? Are we really setting up the HB/WR pass on almost every play?

How about more routes with guys at different levels on the same side of the field? The last offense did a great job at that and gave Nassib multiple options on the same side of the field.

one issue with those routes is that Hunt tends to throw high.. you start stacking routes and that becomes more of an issue.
