Tired of All the Red Bashing...

lol, most here didn't want to keep the players from last year's team who left and they haven't exactly been tearing it up elsewhere.
That’s not the point and I would hope you recognize that.

You can lead a horse to water… Bell isn’t a puppet with Red holding the strings. Bell’s regression is on Bell.
The fact that Bell is still on the team and expected to play a significant role is squarely on Autry. His antics on the court and his actions as a player led exactly zero sane people to believe he could be better than a 7th-8th man on a decent team. Look around the country, nobody that’s any good has a pouty Chris Bell playing big minutes. Let alone asking the same guy to play a bigger role on the team the following season. Nobody.

It’s fair to criticize Red for believing in Bell. That said, did you really expect him to be this bad? Even when Tyler Lydon regressed as a sophomore, he was at least playable.

And it’s not as if Red is forcing the issue with Bell at this point. Bell’s minutes are decreasing, as they should.

Underdogs at home tomorrow against a team that's dropped over 50 spots in Kenpom since opening night and shoots worse from three than us.

Be nice fair to the coach!!!!
FIFY

JJ couldn't guard a traffic cone and isn't top 500 in the country in any offensive category besides Possession %, Shot % and fouls drawn/40. And he shoots 68% when he gets to the line. An inefficient offensive player on high volume and a downright bad defensive player. But, sure, he's our savior.

We will be 11-20 watching the ACCT from home and the excuses will still be flying.
Correct me if I’m wrong… Starling’s defensive metrics were better against Texas and Texas Tech than against the lesser opponents. Again, playing to the level of competition.

My guess is he didn’t try to play defense last year because he was recovering from his shoulder injuries. This year, he didn’t seem to care about playing D against those smaller schools. (That’s not acceptable.) His effort improved in Brooklyn.

So maybe he’ll put forth the right amount of effort during conference play. We’ll see.

This is wild. I thought you realized that Red cannot coach. Maybe if we had JJ we do have two more wins. That's not the point, we should be able to beat Georgetown and Notre Dame with or without him. Those teams are trash. We had some barnburners vs LeMoyne, Colgate and Youngstown St. with JJ. That's what we've become.

If we're going to play the "what if" game, maybe Red should have gotten another pg once Dakota bailed. That tends to happen with teenagers. People weren't exactly thrilled by Red going after Eddie, his limitations were noted on here. We didn't need another guy who doesn't play defense when the HC doesn't know how to coach defense.
Name another PG who was available after Leffew bailed.

(Richmond was never coming back.)

whats the spread? I’ve decided to watch the first 10 mins tomorrow.

If you go back and look at my posting history, I have never been a fan of Bell. So did I expect him to be this bad? That’s a tough question to answer because I was hoping we would never need to rely on him. At all. There isn’t another program in the country that considers itself Top 15-20 (and really Top 10) all-time that would have expected it.

And you say Lydon regressed, but statistically that isn’t true. He shot about the same from 2 & 3, scored and rebounded at the same rate across both of his seasons. He had 29 on 11-12 shooting in a loss to Georgetown and 26 on 11-14 shooting in a loss to North Carolina. Are those losses his fault? The team wasn’t as good - didn’t come together. But Lydon didn’t regress.

Why is that my responsibility (to be honest, I do not remember who was still available)? Maybe Red should have multiple options and not be held hostage. Again, you're missing the point, would Dakota cover up all these warts? Red has one quality, high school recruiting.

This isn’t the right question. The right question is why time and money were prioritized where they were to leave us in the lurch without an ACC-caliber PG.

You don’t get to skip class, not do homework, do poor on tests and then ask why you didn’t get to be valedictorian.

Red made a bet. He lost big time. He put the program in an awful situation.

What PG was he supposed to get? I don’t know and I don’t care. I care that the process was fundamentally broken from the jump in order to get Red “his” team and missing on a PG was the natural consequence of doing so.

Exactly. It's not my job to know who is available. That's his. My job is to sit back and analyze whether he is doing a good job. Like any fan of 40 years and someone who has spent literally years of his life, spending countless thousands of dollars, watching SU hoops would do.

That’s an outstanding dodge. Chef’s kiss.

There wasn’t anyone else available.

BTW, Leffew was Plan B at best (after Reynolds), so Red did exactly as you suggested. He didn’t put all of his eggs in one basket - a popular criticism of JB - and that’s why he made sure to recruit a backup PG/emergency option in Carlos. Unfortunately, the emergency option wound up being the only option.

Those are all PGs or CGs (Leffew was listed as CG) who were uncommitted at the time Leffew pledged to Georgia on 4/27/24. We took Carlos three days before that.

It’s not a tough question to answer at all, it’s easy. No one expected Bell to be this bad. No one.

I didn’t realize Lydon’s regression was anything other than accepted as reality. If you want to insist he didn’t, that’s fine. Pick literally any other player who regressed and my guess is he didn’t regress as much as Bell.

Then it all goes back to this -- the staff not having a pulse on what is actually happening.

Anyone that knew anything knew Reynolds was 50-50 at best to leave SJU. They have a couple big-time donors who want to win. Straughn had a relationship with him. Maybe he was fed a pile of crap? Who knows. All I'm saying is, it has happened COUNTLESS times with the staff for the last 10-12 years, regardless of HC. And it is ultimately their responsibility.

Nah, I cannot consider a player who never entered the portal as our main target. You're failing to acknowledge that Red was comparing Carlos to Ennis.

I thought Red was a good hire at the time. I never thought things would go this bad. Red is the fun-loving players coach, he doesn't hold anyone accountable. It's crazy how people are moving the goal posts to say things might be okay at some point without any evidence. There are no indicators that anything is improving. Again, we had to pull away from Bucknell after playing sloppy ball and displaying little improvement.

Thank you for answering. Some of those guys committed the same day as - or within a few days of - Leffew, so I’m not sure if they represent a true chance for a pivot. Others were not realistic (like Wagner) or out of our price range (like Richmond). Still, you’re the first person here (or elsewhere) to list legitimate options.

I’ll look into some of these guys. One name I do remember is Ty-Laur Johnson. He doesn’t seem like someone who would have helped.

You’re criticizing Red for doing precisely what you wanted him to do: Have options after Reynolds.

As Bulldog said, Leffew committed. Then he screwed us over. HOF coaches are retiring over this NIL nonsense. (I’m not against paying players, but a CBA is desperately needed.)

Have good options. You hired the assistant coach spot with the dude’s head coach. Either you get him and it’s a done deal with no questions or you don’t make the hire. Red is clearly green when it comes to all aspects of in-game coaching. Needed more in that spot if you aren’t getting any players.

I don’t really care about coachspeak. What was he supposed to say? That he was stuck with his backup PG?

Engelstad wasn’t hired to lure Leffew.

Nope, that's not coach speak, straight from the insiders on the board...

Uh, no insiders required. He was quoted in the paper making that Ennis comparison. What was he supposed to say?
