Tired of All the Red Bashing...

Did we lose those games? Didn’t everyone say we were going to get smoked by Texas because those games were so close?

Could it be that we played to the level of our competition? And that we had a bunch of guys who had never played together before? Who had never played in the Dome before?

No we didn't lose those games. We also didn't win the games that some are crediting as wins if JJ played. There have been numerous Syracuse teams that haven't played together and may have not had much experience in the Dome. How often did we struggle with that caliber of opponent? I am also not sure that playing to the level of our competition against garbage teams and getting boat raced by quality teams is a positive for Autry as a coach.

The idea that Chris Bell's status on this team is outside of Red's control is wild.
You can lead a horse to water… Bell isn’t a puppet with Red holding the strings. Bell’s regression is on Bell.

Starling is not a Savior. Sick of that excuse. He’s an average Power conference starter on a good team. A high volume scorer who gives up as much on the other end. We were still getting blasted by Tennessee and Maryland with him.
Nice cherry pick. Of course those two teams are out of our league. No one’s suggesting otherwise. It’s not a stretch to say we beat ND and Georgetown with him, though.

JJ couldn't guard a traffic cone and isn't top 500 in the country in any offensive category besides Possession %, Shot % and fouls drawn/40. And he shoots 68% when he gets to the line. An inefficient offensive player on high volume and a downright bad defensive player. But, sure, he's our savior.

We will be 11-20 watching the ACCT from home and the excuses will still be flying.

The offensive system Red installed is amazing just need to have JJ --- LOL

Some of you guys can't believe what your eyes are telling you...

JJ - Healthy
Bell - No Regression
Lampkin - Healthy

We are still a poorly coached team. We look like an AAU team. No offensive or defensive system and we roll the ball out and play. Our team looks unorganized and unprepared (why we start each half so poorly) Teams have lesser talent and injuries and still can put teams out that are competitive because they are well coached.

Red brought all these problems on himself.

It's a stretch to say we were one possession away from losing to three bad teams however it's not a stretch to say we beat two better quality teams with JJ. It's also a stretch to hold coaches responsible for player's bad performances. Are you related to Autry?

Or he could have played like he did against Cornell and we would have still lost. In case you forgot he was 3-17 shooting in that game. It's not like JJ is a consistent high-level player.

Obviously we didn’t win those games… We were without Starling.

We basically returned 2.5 players from last year’s team. That’s a significant amount of turnover compared to past seasons.

lol, most here didn't want to keep the players from last year's team who left and they haven't exactly been tearing it up elsewhere.

Day2 is absolutely right. If JJ plays there’s 2 more wins. If Chris Bell makes a 3 THIS YEAR (especially against Texas) they win. Dakota committed and backed out. JC was never supposed to be the starting PG. Chance gets mono. Eddie gets hurt in practice. Not sure how ALL OF THAT doesn’t matter. Could the coaching be better ? Of course it always could be. But that’s like saying a football team that loses their starting QB to injury doesn’t matter and it’s the coaches fault. Cmon. Does Red deserve some criticism, absolutely. But there are some serious factors in play here that have derailed the season. And people that say “he put this team together”, yes he did. He put a healthy team together and 3 of the main parts of that plan have been hurt.

There’s a lot of us that truly thought this was going to be a good team. A lot of us. Unfortunately it hasn’t gone the way we thought and of course we all want better
This is wild. I thought you realized that Red cannot coach. Maybe if we had JJ we do have two more wins. That's not the point, we should be able to beat Georgetown and Notre Dame with or without him. Those teams are trash. We had some barnburners vs LeMoyne, Colgate and Youngstown St. with JJ. That's what we've become.

If we're going to play the "what if" game, maybe Red should have gotten another pg once Dakota bailed. That tends to happen with teenagers. People weren't exactly thrilled by Red going after Eddie, his limitations were noted on here. We didn't need another guy who doesn't play defense when the HC doesn't know how to coach defense.

I guess we can quibble over the definition of "good year."

He won 20 games after losing Edwards. He did what most on this Board wanted - he moved to a man-to-man defense. He got to the post season.

He probably did better than many on this board expected.

Deciding to fire a coach after that kind of first season - 12 games into the second season - is not the way to run a sports franchise in my opinion.

He may turn out to be the wrong choice, but for me, right now, it is too early to draw that conclusion.
Don't disagree with your thoughts at this time, but if we get to 30 games and are 12-18, it's time to think about a change.

And Bell relied on Judah and Q to penetrative, and draw defenders to them so they could pass to him open in the corner.

Did you miss the 4 times I said stuff about the coaching?

I've seen some of your posts on the topic. If you cannot coach, the recruiting doesn't really matter. Red doesn't develop players, instill discipline, construct a balanced roster or have any identity on offense or defense. JJ's absence magnifies these issues. Or we can keep making excuses.

In addition to the lack of a system on both sides of the ball and being unprepared, I would also add the substitutions (or lack thereof for some players)/rotations have been mindboggling far too often.

Remember when we used to be satisfied with a top 6 finish in the Big East?

Yeah, neither do I. How far we have fallen...
I think he means top 6 would represent growth, with more expected growth and expectations for steady top 4-5 finishes most years after that. Also Top 6 wouldn’t be bad in these days of bloated conference memberships. Sure, Top 6 would be bad in the old 9 or 10 team Big East. But the ACC is now an 18-team conference.

Not only did we not qualify for the NCAA tournament, we didn't even garner an NIT invitation.

Difficult to classify last season as a "good year." 20 wins isn't the significant line of demarcation it used to be.
This isn’t accurate. We would have been a top 4-8 NIT team but we put out the word that we would decline the invite. This happened with a number of other teams who wanted to focus on the portal.

I'm hoping that Top 500 is hyperbole. If it's not, I don't even have to look to know there's not 500 guys that are averaging more than 19.8 points/game in the country.

Defensively, I agree with you. Offensively, he's this year's Judah, but not as effective. We have no offensive system so we have to rely on someone to make things happen with iso ball and jack up shots. That was Judah's role, but he could also draw fouls and kick it out to Bell for the occasional 3.

Exactly this. A star is Tre Johnson. Not JJ.

PER / TS% / BPM
Tre: 22.5 / 61.7% / 8.0
JJ: 16.7 / 54.5% / 2.3

Totally agree, his injury merely aggravated an already bad situation. His being out did not significantly change our results.

We are going to agree to disagree but the sentence above bolded simply isn’t true.

All of the things above could all be true, and that still doesn’t excuse the results. Youngstown State, LeMoyne, Colgate are a combined 17-25. We beat each by single digits and were lucky not to lose at least two of them. That’s coaching. Not losing your QB.

Leffew happened in the summer. He was never a part of the team. There was still time to find additional help. We chose not to. Lampkin came in completely out of shape. Is that his fault? Mostly. But if you are investing significant resources into this guy, wouldn’t it be wise to do your homework? Bell has not been trustworthy since the moment he walked on campus… and if you were counting at ALL on Westry helping based on his history, shame on you.
