Tyus to test draft... without agent ...

Stats aren't everything, but even Huerter didn't play well. Shot very poorly. And in the drills and measurements, Battle did better in more than half of them. Yet people are gaga about him. I have no doubt he's probably a 2nd rounder, but some people are bending over backwards trying to say he did poorly. And I'll say even ESPN isn't looking at the full combine either.

According to this report from the Wash Post, Huerter did well and showed surprisingly good defensive ability.

At the NBA draft combine, mystery is more valuable than getting on the court

Yeah the panel yesterday at the beginning of the Combine with Adrian and the NBA exec guy said Huerter impressed in all facets of the game.

He looked good at PG which may have been the surprising part to say he played well. He shot really bad. His defense was no better than Battles. Many articles have said Battle looked good on defense which was surprising since he's an SU guy playing that dreaded zone. What that article does say is that players like Battle shouldn't participate in 5-5's.

Oh, and middle of the pack is cherry picking a couple of tests. Look at my post about his placement in everything. I'd say its a lot better than a general middle of the pack.

The "middle of the pack" was Donna's quote based upon the aforementioned article.

Good thing you're keeping all of us here "right" and on the straight and narrow. ;):)

Well, you could read the actual data. It's been posted in this thread.

Only mimics and idiots think that playing zone in college inhibits the ability to play man-to-man defense in the NBA.

I haven't seen much of the combine (just a little early on). Based on what you all have seen/heard from there so far, in your opinion do you think it's more or less likely he will stay in draft now vs. before the combine? Admittedly, I haven't read all of this long thread, maybe it's been stated already here. I think he stays in from the limited amount I've heard, and he's come this far, why not continue.

Post-combine projection: 2018 second round

Tyus Battle may want to put off hiring an agent for another year after a quiet NBA combine.

Syracuse's ball-dominant, go-to player last season, he struggled in a setting where he wasn't the top option; a discouraging sign, given what his role will be in the pros.

Battle did little to distinguish himself, blending in for most of Thursday and Friday.

Assuming the goal of testing the waters was to see whether he could earn himself first-round looks, he will need to come back and try again in 2019.

I feel like these articles fuel Tyus even more and he will stay in and wherever he lands hes confident he will prove people wrong. Whether that is late first, second rd, undrafted etc, I dont think he cares

The only time the zone has ever been accused of being "dreadful" and playing it is an impediment to playing defense is on this Forum.

Has there ever been a topic on here in which there have been more gut-feel opinions expressed, even if they are dressed up with statistical analysis and blurbs from so-called" experts.

They range from "He Gone" without a chard of supporting evidence offered to reports of "He helped himself" and "He didn't help himself".

I especially like the claim of "SU will win the NC if he returns". I was glad I wasn't drinking coffee when I read that one.

In 11 days, we will know the answer. Until then hand-wringing, fretting, pacing the floor and venturing wild guesses are wastes of time, IMO.

True but the more experience playing m2m against top level competition, the better.

You don't think that curve of ability to improve flattens out after playing competitive basketball for 14 or 15 years? Things don't always improve at the same rate over a period of time (Diminishing Returns).

You are right. Nobody in the media nor any other coach criticizes the zone and it’s affect on players’ defense at the next level. They all love it.

I think tyus should take his top 50 likely pick and go. He will grow as a pro as Jerami did I think.

That being said, if he returns to improve his stock I think the only way that happens is if we go on a championship run.

Our team next year has the tools to do that.

Him, Frank, Oshae backed by Hughes, Carey and Dolezaj will be dangerous.

You’re right...there are definitely those in the media who make that point.

That doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about though. I think it’s one of those lazy points that people just repeat. Which is a large percentage of sports media now. Just lazy H0T Takes everywhere. There have been a number of decent-good defenders in the pros from SU.

The one credible scout I heard talk about it said that it isn't that playing the zone in college predicts defensive ability at the NBA level, it's more that the player's defensive ability playing man has some mystery and uncertainty.

The DraftExpress guys are saying Battle is “an intriguing 2nd round prospect” after his lackluster showing at the Combine.

I think he’s worth taking as a 2nd round pick. Could get a decent player like Grant in the right system. Grant had more upside though, IMO. This Melvin Frazier has been generating buzz after a good showing in CHI and probably moved into the first round. Adrian and that NBA exec said they like that he played for Dunleavy also. This is crazy good below. The Tar Heel bench gets up and right away they sit back down like, “Oops we shouldn’t be doing this!”

Looks like something Bazley would do

Cuse bench had a similar reaction on one of Donovan Mitchell’s many ridiculous dunks against us.

Mitchell is a perfect example of how drafting is such an inexact science. Just one year after he got drafted, you can argue that he should’ve been the first pick.
