UConn hoops back to Big East

Lets look at big picture outside of $$$$. SU and UConn football will never win a national title in any of our lifetimes. SU and UConn basketball going forward could, but imo not in their current conferences. But whatevs we will take $ over titles. Fun Fun

There is no "big picture" if you exclude $$$$.

Yeah, let's go back to the BE and be with our besties Villanova and Providence. Let's be UConn!

Our resident basketball only chimes in again. Thanks Jack.

SU football is 2 wins last year from being in the college football playoff.
We barely lost to Clemson in DV in the last minute of the game while leading for 85% of the game.
We lost in OT against Pittsburgh when there was a lighting delay and the refs not blowing their whistles giving Pitt a screwjob TD.

SU football under Dino can make the playoffs thus it could win a NC if all the right breaks occurred.
We aren’t going to be a machine every year like Clemson or Alabama but Dino could win a NC.

Because of the conference SU is in, we do have a shot at a football national title. Not a great chance but a chance. As to current conferences in b-ball, it increases SUs chance at a nattie. UCant not so much.

Sure but now that conference can claim more recent NCs than before.

Also since Notre Dame has gone B1G for hockey would not be shocked if they join it for hoops once this contract is up. That’s a long way off though. But expect that if they lose too many of the 5 ACC football games they play annually.
Not. Gonna. Happen. They had to go to the B1G for hockey because something happened to Hockey East (IIRC it folded because people had to re-form conferences or something to that effect). Their administration and their fans didn't want to do it and wouldn't have done it without the collapse of Hockey East. ND considers itself an Eastern school that happens to be in the Midwest because the bulk of their alums are from the East Coast. Other than the Chicago area, there really aren't that many in the Midwest. Their current contract with the ACC ends in 2036. I don't see ND and the ACC coming up with a schedule of 5 games that will result in 3 ND losses, short of a total implosion of their program. Make no mistake, most on their hard-core board hate Kelly and want him gone yesterday. But few of them see that implosion on the horizon, the bad looks more to them like a bunch of 8-4/7-5 seasons.

I’m in Boston and a HE fan they left on their own volition to reduce travel. When they joined they were hell bent on not being a rust belt school they’ve reversed course and schedule those schools again in football and joined in hoops and there was no pressure to be a FB member like 5 years prior when things were moving around.

They will want out if they lose too many. But I think they like their current scheduling. Also the NBE is a good conference but easier to win in hoops 16 years of sucking could make them want out.

So Edsall messed UConn in 2011 by ditching them for Maryland without any notice.

Looks like the administration returned the favor...

It’s a tough conference in football.

Teams at the top are good UCF Houston Memphis and the next level isn’t bad USF ECU etc. They need some easier competition I don’t see how they start winning. It’s a tougher conference than the Bog East after Miami and VT left (part of that was due to us being a joke.)

That freaking TD with the missed forward progress call still annoys the fout of me.

This will revive UConn basketball and their recruiting. Will negatively impact us since we frequently target the same recruits.

So if you don’t win championships it’s pointless? Thank God for Carmelo then, otherwise SU hoops has been pointless?

SU football last season was on par with 95% of SU hoops teams in terms of how they compared nationally to everyone else. Odd timing. It ain’t the GRob era anymore.

It won’t revive anything. This is an admission by UConn they can’t afford football and losing all the money they are.
So why lose millions of dollars and play Tulsa/Tulane/East Carolina/SMU and all those travel costs plus their fans can’t get to the games when they can play basketball in their natural region with old rivals and won’t lose the same money in football.
Make no mistake this move is UConn saying football was bleeding money and killing the AD financially and the new AAC deal wasn’t going to sustain them.
So they are giving up bigtime football to save their basketball brand. It’s not going to revitalize anything. It’s admitting football was a mistake.

Smartest decision their athletic program has made since hiring Jim Calhoun.

Won't be pleasant seeing their bball program rising back to national prominence and playing in the Big East tournament at MSG every year. Oh well.

This also explains why Hurley took the job.

Eh. They don’t have Jim Calhoun anymore, and while the BE is a solid b-ball league, it doesn’t have the cache it had in the “real” Big East.

I’m not convinced Hurley is any good, and they might just be another Seton Hall/St. Johns - good every now and then, but nobody cares.

We were two quarters away from being in the conversation last year.
