UNLV QB refuses to play rest of season

Two portal players in the same day with the same messaging would lead me to believe this is on the UNLV side...
The RB went from 10 carries in week 1 to 2 carries in week 3. Don't think it's related to money. Apparently he was getting buried in the depth chart

I have noooooooo idea. But is it out of pocket for a QB for a ranked team in a large media market playing in a state of the art stadium to find 100k?
Nope, it seems like a very reasonable amount to me. Which is why this doesn’t make sense to me. Why would the QB have committed there without anything more than a $3K/month payday?

UNLV’s statement comes off as very lawyerly to me. I’m interested to learn more. Because if UNLV knows Sluka received a private offer from another school for next year, they need to say that out loud.

Agree 100% which makes UNLVs statement make more sense, keep it the what you have close until you don't have to.

Well it was definitely harder to get into SU for me than kids today. Pretty sure it’s harder for young people to buy a house now than it used to be though.
I dont know, man, the Guy Fieri Effect on UNLV has really jacked up their application numbers.

Interesting based on his statement. But seems to align with players being promised things they didn't receive.

And my biggest pet peeve is hearing kids (or adults) say "It's just different for kids today" or "it's harder for kids today". uh, no, not even close.

Dude, seriously?

Look up college costs in 1980, adjusted for inflation. Then compare to college costs today, Look up what the median house price to median income ratio was 40 years ago, and compare that to today.

We - Silents, Booners, Gen X, and to an incredibly small degree millennials have absolutely screwed kids today. My biggest fear is that kids today figure that out - if they ever do there’s going to be hell to pay…

You are absolutely delusional with your head buried up your posterior if you think otherwise.

Why do people think MWC players deserve so much? These athletic departments aren’t profitable and are run at a net loss. Vegas has an NFL team and no one has ever cared about UNLV.

Per Thamel, $100K for a G5 starter is pretty much the going rate. I don’t know about “deserve” - but what he was promised appears to be the going market rate.

The coach makes 1.75 million a year at UNLV.
And they couldnt come up with 100K for their star player?

Just beyond bizarre and short sighted.
UNLV was such a national feel good story up to last night -
now they seem like a greedy school taking advantage of their star player.
15K - the mind reels that they actually thought that was generous.
Different pools and sources of money.

I mean it’s only week 3 he could have gotten what was promised by the end of the year. I’m sure there are signed agreements. What happens when the new program backs out too?
That’s not what he was told.

But what if he got beat out in camp and didn’t play? He still deserves it?

It didn’t say anything
It says the player held them up for money. That makes more sense than them not paying their most important player an agreed upon 100k. It makes literally no sense.

Vegas won’t let you set foot on a casino floor if you aren’t 21. Can’t think of a worse place on the planet for college age kids. They don’t even cater to families anymore tourism is entirely designed around people leaving their minor offspring at home.

Now if you want to work in the service industry and want a related degree specific to it sure it’s probably solid for that.

Then I don’t think we agree 100%. ;)

UNLV’s statement makes no sense to me. They’re essentially saying Sluka’s rep tried to extort them, from out of nowhere, this week. Do we really think that’s what he did? I mean, anything is possible. But that stretches belief.

Deserve ain’t got nothing to do with it.

Seriously, it doesn’t. It takes a financial commitment to lure a player to a school. We didn’t condition McCord’s money on him starting, throwing less than 10 picks, or whatever.
Get real. 99/100 players across all NCAAF rosters probably fee shorted on their NIL even ours. Can you sue your coke dealer bc your 8 ball weighs 2.5?

What do YOU think NIL is? The schools can't pay players, and that's pretty much what they are saying.
I think NIL is paid by the NIL collective so that the players play for the school.
NIL collectives and colleges work pretty much hand in hand,
NIL collectives pay who the colleges want them to pay.

Obviously, the NIL collective decided not to make good on a promise that was made to the player during the recruitment process. I tend to think the school was ok with that for whatever reason.

You're misinformed about college life in Las Vegas. What other campus has Hakkasan a couple city blocks distance away from their campus?

It's the worst place to go because there is more temptation there than any campus anywhere in the world.

Closer to reality. Wouldn’t take payments wanted lump sum and walked. Probably put out feelers to 50+ programs for next year and got enough interest to walk.

If he has what he thinks is an agreement he better pray every other QB they pursue says no.

College kids are under 21 for most of their college experience. I’m an August birthday and I remember first week of senior year being the only one who could get beer legally bc my housemates were September and October and even younger.

Does Hakkasan risk their licenses just bc the 19 year old at the door goes to UNLV?

I agree with everything you've said, but yeah, I think they tried to extort them.

This is all so weird, just college sports in general.

I have no idea what you mean?

A player using the portal to transfer to a school often does so due to NIL commitments made by the school.

McCord doesn’t come to SU if he wasn’t promised an amount of NIL money he found acceptable.

If McCord came here, threw 125 picks in preseason camp and was beaten out to be the starter, the collective is still on the hook to pay him what was promised.

We’re not taking about an incentive program here. These are prearranged financial commitments.
