I had a chance to sit and watch the Rutty game from this week. I am by no means a football coach, but have some observations:
#2 Cruickshank is their returner/WR and their most explosive player, they run some speed sweep and WR screens with him. Need to not give him return room.
#18 Melton is their other WR and the other guy they try to get the ball in space, mostly with quick hitches and outside WR screens.
Their QB #0 Vedral did not have a good day throwing the ball. Most all of his completions were quick throws within 3 yards of the LOS. When forced to throw further downfield he did not have good accuracy. Temple seemed content rushing 3 most plays, and on longer passes Vedral ended up scrambling and trying to make a play with his legs rather than throw down field. We need to keep him in the pocket and force him to beat us with his arm.
On offense they run lots of read option, WR screens. Not much downfield or where the QB needs to read the defense. They do what we do sometimes where we line up, fake the snap, then the offense looks at the sideline for the play now that the coaches know the defensive lineup.
They have another QB #21 who ran some wildcat in the red zone, also lined up at TE on a few plays, he doesn't throw the ball well, but is a big athlete. I think we could use Shrader like this effectively.
Rutgers RB's are serviceable, unspectacular, not really worried about any of them- Pacheco got most playing time.
On defense Rutgers brought pressure from the Safety spot or LB on most passing plays. I hope our O-Line has improved on blitz pickup. Temple had people open but with the pressure, the QB couldn't find them. Temple did have some success throwing the ball downfield when the starting QB had time.
Early in the 3rd quarter Temple lost their starting RB- Saydee and QB within a few minutes. Saydee was playing very well and it looked like was getting into a rhythm. Then the QB went down and the Temple offense went into a shell. Their 2nd string QB was a decent runner but his first throw was a pick-6. If Temple didn't lose their top 2 offensive weapons I think this game is a lot closer than the final score.
On special teams I'm not sure they trust their kicker, they had a 4th and 3 inside the 30 and chose to go for it instead of kicking a FG. It was early in the game and maybe they wanted an easier first kick of the season/game for him.
The punter is an Aussie style kicker, will run with the ball 3-6 steps before punting if given time. His kicks don't have much hang time, more of a low punch, but were very effective.
Overall, hard to tell how good they are based on one game. Temple gifted them VERY short fields on multiple occasions either with poor TO's or bad special teams play.
More confident now that I watched their game. Need to pickup the blitz, mistake free ST, and make their QB beat us with his arm and we should be in great shape!
