I had a chance to sit and watch the Rutty game from this week. I am by no means a football coach, but have some observations:

#2 Cruickshank is their returner/WR and their most explosive player, they run some speed sweep and WR screens with him. Need to not give him return room.

#18 Melton is their other WR and the other guy they try to get the ball in space, mostly with quick hitches and outside WR screens.

Their QB #0 Vedral did not have a good day throwing the ball. Most all of his completions were quick throws within 3 yards of the LOS. When forced to throw further downfield he did not have good accuracy. Temple seemed content rushing 3 most plays, and on longer passes Vedral ended up scrambling and trying to make a play with his legs rather than throw down field. We need to keep him in the pocket and force him to beat us with his arm.

On offense they run lots of read option, WR screens. Not much downfield or where the QB needs to read the defense. They do what we do sometimes where we line up, fake the snap, then the offense looks at the sideline for the play now that the coaches know the defensive lineup.

They have another QB #21 who ran some wildcat in the red zone, also lined up at TE on a few plays, he doesn't throw the ball well, but is a big athlete. I think we could use Shrader like this effectively.

Rutgers RB's are serviceable, unspectacular, not really worried about any of them- Pacheco got most playing time.

On defense Rutgers brought pressure from the Safety spot or LB on most passing plays. I hope our O-Line has improved on blitz pickup. Temple had people open but with the pressure, the QB couldn't find them. Temple did have some success throwing the ball downfield when the starting QB had time.

Early in the 3rd quarter Temple lost their starting RB- Saydee and QB within a few minutes. Saydee was playing very well and it looked like was getting into a rhythm. Then the QB went down and the Temple offense went into a shell. Their 2nd string QB was a decent runner but his first throw was a pick-6. If Temple didn't lose their top 2 offensive weapons I think this game is a lot closer than the final score.

On special teams I'm not sure they trust their kicker, they had a 4th and 3 inside the 30 and chose to go for it instead of kicking a FG. It was early in the game and maybe they wanted an easier first kick of the season/game for him.

The punter is an Aussie style kicker, will run with the ball 3-6 steps before punting if given time. His kicks don't have much hang time, more of a low punch, but were very effective.

Overall, hard to tell how good they are based on one game. Temple gifted them VERY short fields on multiple occasions either with poor TO's or bad special teams play.

More confident now that I watched their game. Need to pickup the blitz, mistake free ST, and make their QB beat us with his arm and we should be in great shape!

Good game summary...5 turnovers for Temple. I think they play 2 freshmen QBs and they acquired
some retreads off the transfer portal. 1-6 last year...? hmmmm higher win% than CUSE had:(

Willingly watching that game in itself gets a like from me. Good write up to boot.

It actually wasn't too bad, in another thread 690West linked to a website that has full game replays and you can skip ahead between plays. You can get through a game in about 20-30 minutes, back each play up and watch it multiple times if you wanted.

I also watched an extended highlight of game. Good write up. I agree with all of this but also wanted to add I thought Temple ran the ball quite easily a few times. I don't know if some of that was due to Rutgers playing backups due to the blow out or not, but this is a winnable game but only if we have the right defensive gameplan in response. #1, I thought we played too soft vs Ohio with too many soft defensive front 3's and too many two deep safeties backpedaling on the snap. We have to attack the line of scrimmage with front fours, smart blitzes, and corners and 1 or 2 safeties only 5-7 yards from LOS. They will not beat us deep with Vedral's arm and if we put pressure on him. Their bread and butter is the speed of Cruikshank on sweeps and Melton on short pass plays. If we play too soft and conservative and only react to them and don't attack, I do believe their talent like Ohio can slowly move down the field but with alittle more talent than Ohio to get it in the endzone.

Temple's RB Edward Saydee was playing very well up until he left with an injury, talented kid.

Watched some highlights. Temple is a really bad team. A few of their mistakes weren't even forced by Rutgers, just bad plays. Rutty's QB, not good. Missed on a lot of short passes which our CB's would have a chance to make plays on.

I've got the Orange colored glasses on after week 1, but there shouldn't be any reason we lose this game.

A few things to add. Cruickshank and Melton have some serious speed and can do damage with the ball in space. I like the match-ups with them on the outside if Williams is healthy. And I think Cole will be effective against them, I'm just not as confident as I am with Williams. Our safeties and linebackers are going to be challenged with containing runs to the outside. It seems our response to 12 personnel is to bring both linebackers down into a bear front. I'd like to see less of that this game and just focus on remaining gap sound in the box. I think if we do those few things we'll put ourselves in a good situation.
I agree that containing Vedral in the pocket is key, and the more we get him throwing the ball, especially in high pressure situations, the better for us. They want to run the ball. Crucial to put them in a situation where they have to throw.
On offense we are going to need to throw the ball to open up the defense. I expect them to load the box and blitz like crazy to try to shut down the running game. They are vulnerable to the quick game because of how they like to pressure. This will be a perfect game to get the ball out to Taj in the flat and run lots of wide receiver screens against a corner/safety bracket or man coverage when they are trying to overload on one side.

Great recap. I'll just add that Melton is their vertical threat. They will take shots with him. They are not big on the D line but they are quick and agressive. Their LB # 3 is good. He finds the ball. I think we can run the ball on them. I will like to see us run QB draw at times. That will neutralize their blitizing a bit on 3rd downs.

Thank you! That actually means a lot from you.

Temple also had success with their RB doing a quick hitch in the middle of the field. He had 2 catches for 25 yards. Seemed to work well.

Very good summary

The Only slight disagreements are that, I do believe the coach has confidence in the field goal kicker, he was trying to be aggressive in that
Short yardage situation

The top three or four RU running backs are all very good, but the O
Line continually fails to open holes

The punter is a big plus for RU, has a knack for pinning the other team inside the 20 or better

That said, if you stuff the run, guard the sideline pass well, which Schiano overuses, Cuse can win this

as was previously noted, 3 of devitos passes were to the left, 3 to the right and 6 between the numbers.
That's completions, right? Do we know what the attempts were? Not trying to be debative. Just curious.

that’s attempts
He only attempted 12 passes all game? The espn box score says he was 11/17 for 92 yards and Shrader was 1/1 for 8 yards.

attempts past the line of scrimmage. He had a few behind the line and they missed a couple passes.

I just read that this is the first time since 2009 that Rutgers is a road favorite against a Power 5 opponent. It isn't because people think they are good, it's because people think we stink, time to shove it up their arses again, like last week.
